[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to James Grant, as far as I know. I am very interested in him though. His wife and several children wound up in Macon Co, NC with my own Grant ancestors.

A paper written in in 1937 (currently on file at the Southern Historical Collection, Curry Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) gives some data on this family. There is very little documentation, but what is stated seems to agree with other records and what I've been able to find.

James Grant was born ca 1755/1765 in Virginia. He was a son of James Grant and Ann Diskin of Caswell Co, NC as proven by both James' Will (1801) and Ann's Will (1807). I don't know what county he was born in. His daughter Mary W. Grant Roane listed her father's birth place as Virginia on her 1880 census entry, thus confirming that he was born in Virginia.

James Grant was listed on the 1786 Census in Caswell Co, NC. He wasn't yet married, and was listed  by himself.

1786 census analysis (based on available evidence):

Analysis:
1 Male(s) 21 - 60 (1726-1765)	James GRANT Jr (1755/65) s/o James & Ann

Unfortunately, the 1790 census records for Caswell Co, NC were lost. However, the published version of this census included a reconstructed census based on extant tax lists. No detail was given as to what date that tax list was. James Grant Jr was included.

1790 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1790 Caswell Co, NC pg 79 James Grant Jr 0-0-0-0-0
Analysis:
* Actual census lost, this is reconstructed from tax lists.

James Grant married Elizabeth Powell ca 1790/97 in Caswell Co, NC. Her maiden name is per the 1937 paper. She was born 27 Aug 1779 and died 20 May 1858 per her tombstone in Franklin, NC (Macon County) at the First Methodist Church Cemetery. I've seen her marker, and it seems to be original. Her entry on the 1850 census lists her birth place as Tennessee, but I'm not sure if that is correct. Her parents could have moved to TN temporarily around 1779 and then returned to Caswell Co, NC before ca 1797.

James Grant Jr began appearing in Rockingham Co, NC Deed records in 1795, listed as "of Caswell Co, NC", so he didn't move there right away.

James Grant Jr was listed on the 1800 census in Caswell County, NC. Strangely, he had no apparent wife listed with him. That makes me wonder if Elizabeth Powell was not his first wife. Either she was a 2nd wife married after 1800, or else this census record is in error.

James Grant Jr was named in the Will of his father James Grant Sr dated 8 Dec 1801 in Caswell Co, NC (Book E page 177). He was the first named son, probably indicating he was the oldest child (which seems correct based on other evidence). He was also named as one of the Executors.

James Grant Jr was named in the Will of his mother Ann Grant dated 16 Aug 1807 in Caswell Co, NC (Book E page 427). He was named as a son, and also as Executor.

James Grant was listed on the 1810 census. He was no longer listed as "Jr" since his father was dead, and there were no other James Grant's around who were older than him. This census apparently includes Elizabeth Powell.

By 1818 James Grant had moved to his Rockingham Co, NC land. On 11 Sep 1818 he sold land on behalf of his brother Joshua Grant of Christian Co, KY, but formerly of "said" county (Rockingham, I assume). Thanks to Deborah Youskevtch for that deed.

James Grant was listed on the 1820 census in Rockingham Co, NC. His son Archibald Grant was listed on the same census, but not too close by.

James Grant apparently died in Rockingham Co, NC in the 1820-1830 timeframe. I didn't find him nor Elizabeth listed in 1830. Coincidentally (or not) I didn't find their married son Archibald listed in 1830 census either. James and Elizabeth's daughter Mary W. Grant married Thomas J. Roane in 1824 in Rockingham Co, NC. I did find them listed on the 1830 census in Rockingham. They had a woman age 60-69 (born ca 1760/70) living with them. That could be Elizabeth Powell Grant, but that doesn't fit her age very well. That could be Thomas Roane's mother instead.

My guess is that Elizabeth and her unmarried sons and daughters were living with one of her married daughters whom we don't know about yet. The census indicates at least one other daughter who is unidentified so far.

The 1937 paper says that James died after 1830 in Macon Co, NC, but I don't know if that is correct or not. If he was still living in 1830, I wonder where he was. I have not been able to find James Grant on the 1830 census.

In 1832 Elizabeth Powell Grant and some of her children left Rockingham Co, NC and moved to Macon Co, NC. Coincidentally, my own Grant ancestors (Andrew Grant family) moved to Macon Co, NC at the same time, but from Rutherford Co, NC. As far as I know, my Grants are not related to this Grant family.

Again, I didn't find Elizabeth listed on the 1840 census, but her son-in-law James K. Gray had a woman age 70-79 (born ca 1760/70) living with him, that could be her. This age doesn't agree with a 1779 birth date, but it could still be her.

On the 1850 census, Elizabeth Powell Grant was living with her daughter Mary W. Grant Roane and her husband Thomas J. Roane in Macon Co, NC. Fortunately for researchers today, this census taker had the foresight to take down the actual county of birth for each person, instead of just the state like most did.

(Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age)

Elizabeth Powell Grant died 20 May 1858 in Macon Co, NC and is buried at the Franklin Methodist Church Cemetery in downtown Franklin. My dad (Alan Grant) and I visited her grave in July 1998 and I took a photograph of it. The stone was white and the lettering was also white, so it is hard to make out in the photo, but standing in front of it I could read the stone just fine. It is in fairly good shape. The cemetery is well maintained. Her stone says "Elizabeth Grant Aug 27 1779 - May 20 1858".

Children

Of all the children of James Grant and Elizabeth Powell, only two of them (as far as we know) ever came to Macon Co, NC, and those were both daughters, Mary who married Thomas J. Roane, and Frances Williams Grant who married James K. Gray. Their younger sons may also have came initially, but didn't stay or leave any records there.

The 1937 document I mentioned earlier lists the children of James Grant and Elizabeth Powell. This document, dated 31 Jan 1937 was a report prepared by a Genealogist for a Mr. Alva M. Turner. It refers to a letter from Mr. Turner dated 3 Dec 1936 and recaps what Mr. Turner sent to him. It seems that Mr. Turner already had the family figured out, and from what I can tell, the Genealogist added very little to what Mr. Turner already submitted. So, this list of children is based on Mr. Alva M. Turner's listing (from 1936) and other evidence that supports what he stated. Census records indicate at least two additional sons, both born ca 1794/1800 and at least one other daughter, born ca 1804/10, or perhaps two daughters that same age.

Archibald Grant was born 1 Feb 1797 in Caswell Co, NC. I think these dates came from Deborah Youskevtch. I can't find my source just yet, but I think she sent it to me. The 1937 report I mentioned stated that Archibald was born "1797" and that he married Lydia Roberts in 1818 who died 1854 in Henry Co, VA, then he married her sister Jemima Roberts. Other than the 1937 report, I don't know what evidence there is that Archibald is a son of James and Elizabeth, but I see no reason to doubt it. He was in Rockingham Co, NC in 1820. I didn't find him in 1830 and 1840, but in 1850 and 1860 he was in Henry Co, VA. He later moved to Jefferson Co, IL where he died. See his own page for additional information.

Neeley C. Grant was born 19 Oct 1801 (this date conflicts with Mary's date above). He might have been born in 1800 instead, which works better with an October 19th date, and his 1850 and 1860 census ages. He married Mary Thornton 5 Apr 1840. Other than the 1937 report, I don't know of any proof connecting him with James and Elizabeth, but I think it is correct. He was in Montgomery Co, TN in 1850 and Jefferson Co, IL by 1860. See his own page for additional information.

Mary W. Grant was born 10 Mar 1803 (per tombstone), either in Caswell County, North Carolina (where her parents were living ca 1801), or in Rockingham County, North Carolina as reported on her 1860 census entry. I'm not sure of her middle name. The 1850 census gives no name or initial. In 1860, 1870 and 1880 her middle initial is given as a "W". Someone told me it was for "Williams", which would give her the same middle name as her sister Frances Williams Grant. This is possible, but I've seen no direct evidence for it yet.

Mary was apparently home with her parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and apparently home in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804).

On 25 Jul 1824, Thomas J. Roane (spelled Roan on bond) obtained a marriage bond in Rockingham County to marry Mary Grant. Thomas J. Roane was born 20 Mar 1801 (per tombstone) in Virginia (per 1850 and 1860 census), county unknown. I don't know who his parents were. There was an apparent widow Henrietta Roane listed in 1820 Rockingham Co, NC census. She could be Thomas' mother, or some sort of close relative. She was just two houses from Archibald Grant, so clearly in the right neighborhood. She also had an apparent son with her age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804), so I strongly suspect she is Thomas' mother, or at least a strong candidate. Further evidence is that Thomas named one of his daughters "Henrietta".

Thomas was listed on the 1830 census in Rockingham County. Their neighbors were Robert Grogan and Isaac Hobbs. Thomas had two "extra" females with him, one born ca 1760/70, who I suspect could be his widowed mother Henrietta (---) Roane, and another born ca 1790/1800 who could be an unmarried sister. Henrietta did have an apparent daughter born ca 1794/1804 with her in 1820. This could be the same person with brother Thomas in 1830. No Grants were found in 1830 Rockingham. Mary's father had died before then, and I did not find her mother, though she was still living at the time. I've considered the possibility that the older woman with the Roanes in 1830 could be Mary's widowed mother, but the age is off, as her mother was born in 1779.

Sometime between 1830 and 1832, the Roanes moved to Burke County, North Carolina (based on the birth place of their son Robert who was born there ca 1832), and then by 1833, moved to Macon County, North Carolina where they remained. Burke may have just been a stopping off place on their way to Macon. Several members of Mary's family also moved to Macon at that time, including her mother Elizabeth and her sister Frances. My own Grant ancestors arrived in Macon at the same time, but I have not found any connection between my Grants and the Caswell / Rockingham Grants. It seems to be a coincidence that they all got to Macon County at the same time.

In March 1839 Court, Thomas J. Roane was listed as a juror. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 page 34).

Thomas J. Roane was the Sheriff of Macon County in 1838 and 1839.

Thomas was listed on the 1840 census in Macon County. No known relatives were nearby. His mother did not seem to be with him any longer, so perhaps she had died, or remained in Rockingham County. The enumerations in Thomas' household aren't a perfect match for his known children, so perhaps the census taker got the data from a neighbor. A William Roane (c1790/1800) was also in Macon that year, but not close to Thomas. He could be an older brother, or at least a cousin to Thomas.

Thomas J. Roane died on 30 May 1860 (per tombstone) and as recorded on the 1860 Census Mortality Schedule for Macon County (giving only March 1860). It listed his name as "Thomas J. Roane", age 59, male, married, born in Virginia, a Farmer, and that he died in May of Inflammation of the Brain, and that he had been sick for only 5 days before death.

Mary was listed as head of household on the 1860 census with several of her children with her still. They were in Cartoogechaye District of Macon County.

Mary was still in Macon for the 1880 census, in Cartoogechaye Township, residing with daughter Mary Roane Enloe. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Mary W. Grant Roane died on 29 Apr 1882 in Macon County. She is buried in Franklin at the Presbyterian Cemetery. Her birth and death dates are from her tombstone. She was mentioned on the 1937 report as a child of James and Elizabeth, listed as "Mary (Roane) (1803-1882)".

Diskin Grant was born ca 1814/15 in NC, presumably in Rockingham County. He married 1st Mary Hooper ca 1833 in VA, and 2nd Mary Fitzgerald 1852 in VA. He was listed in 1850 in Pittsylvania Co, VA and by 1860 in Jefferson Co, IL. See his own page for additional information.

Edmond Powell Grant was born ca 1809/10 in Caswell Co, NC. He married Elizabeth Brookman ca 1839. They were in Montgomery Co, TN in 1850 and Jefferson Co, IL by 1860. See his own page for additional information.

William Grant was born ca 1810 (per the 1937 report) or ca 1804/05 per the 1850 census. He never married. The 1937 report lists his dates as "1810-1857".  In 1850, he was living with his brother Edmond in Montgomery Co, TN. William died 1857 in Jefferson Co, IL.

Frances Williams Grant was born 17 Dec 1814 (per tombstone) in North Carolina (Caswell or Rockingham County).

She seems to be home with her parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20). I was unable to locate her widowed mother on the 1830 census, but wherever she was, I'm sure Frances was with her.

Around 1832, her mother and she moved to Macon County, North Carolina.

On 31 Jul 1833, James K. Gray obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Faney W. Grant. The bond listed her as a daughter of James Grant. James Robinson was the bondsman. James K. Gray was born 17 Jul 1796 in Washington Co, TN. I don't know who his parents were. James had been previously married to Mary L. --- (6 Mar 1804 - 1 Jul 1831).

They were listed on the 1840 census in Macon County. James had a very large household including a woman born ca 1760/70. I don't know who this is. It may be Frances' mother Elizabeth Powell Grant (1779), though the age does not fit, but she was somewhere that year.

Frances died on 14 Oct 1843 in Macon Co, NC.

Her obituary stated she was a daughter of James and Elizabeth Grant, formerly of Rockingham Co, NC, but had moved to Macon Co, NC in 1832. ("Marriages & Death Notices from Extant Asheville, NC Newspapers, 1840-1870 an Index" Robert M. Topkins, NCGS 1977, page 85.)

She is buried at the Methodist Church Cemetery in downtown Franklin, NC (Macon County), near her mother. She is listed as "Frances W. Gray Dec -- 1814 - Oct 14 1843 28y 10m 3d".

James K. Gray married a 3rd time on 4 Nov 1845 to Matilda S. Lowery (widow of James Robinson).

He was listed on the 1850 census in Macon County.
