I (Marty Grant) am not related to the James S. Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.
James Sylvester Grant was born 7 Aug 1817 in Burke (now Alexander) Co, NC, a son of Robert Grant and Jane F. Gibbs. I have seen no direct proof of his birth date nor that he is a son of Robert and Jane, but I'm convinced it is accurate. In the book The Heritage of Wilkes County, 1982, Mrs. W.O. Absher, Editor, Article # 605 "John Grant" by Mae R. Hayes, information is given on this family, at least it gives James' birth date and that he was a son of Robert and Jane. I've not been in contact with Ms. Hayes, but from what I've seen on my own, this all seems to be correct. Her article mentions family papers that had the names and birth dates on them.
Perhaps for business reasons, James went to Cumberland County, NC and there he met and married Jane Evans, widow (of Josiah Evans Jr, I think). Their marriage bond was dated 30 Jan 1844, listing them as "James S. Grant" and "Mrs. Jane Evans". I found a marriage record for Josiah Evans Jr and Jane Branson dated 13 Jan 1833, and I'm reasonably sure that is the same Jane, and her first husband. I may not have ever realized that James Grant and Jane of Cumberland were the same as James and Jane of Surry / Yadkin Co, NC, except that in the 1850 census, a Mary A. Evans, age 16 was living with the family.
On the 1850 census, James S. Grant and his wife Jane and their son William Grant, and Jane's daughter Mary A. Evans were all listed together in the South Division of Surry Co, NC. This was the area south of the Yadkin River. This entire section of Surry County became Yadkin County later in 1850. James' brother John E. Grant was just two houses away.

I haven't done much Grant research in Surry Co, NC, so there may be more data on the family waiting to be found. The fact that James had land (per the 1850 census) means there should be deeds in his name in Surry County.
James and family were listed in Yadkin County for the 1860 census. No townships or districts were indicated.

Jane's daughter Mary Evans was no longer at home by 1860. I found a marriage bond for a Mary Evans dated 9 Aug 1854 in Yadkin Co, NC to marry Josiah Cowles Jr. I'm not sure if this is her, but it could be.
James must have died in the 1860-1870 time frame (perhaps in the Civil War), as his widow Jane was listed on the 1870 census in Caldwell County, NC.
