John G. Grant was born ca 1818/19 per his age on the 1850 census (31). His 1850 census entry lists his birth place as South Carolina. I would guess Marlboro Dist., SC, but it could be somewhere else in the state.

I don't know who John's parents are. Census analysis may help narrow it down a bit, but doesn't really prove who his parents were.

John would have been about 1 year old by the time of the 1820 census. Richard S. Grant (1780/84) and Malachi Grant (c1790) were the only Grants in Marlboro at that time. Malachi had two apparent sons under 10 (born ca 1810/20). One of those could be John. Richard had no sons that age in 1820 though there were other problems with his 1820 census entry.

By 1830 John would have been about 11 years old. Richard and Malachi were both in Marlboro still and both had apparent sons aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).

John would have been about 21 for the 1840 census. None of the Grants in Marlboro that year had an apparent son that age. Over in neighboring Richmond Co., NC Malachi Grant (c1790) had two boys aged 10-23 (c1816/30), one of whom could be John.

John G. Grant married Margaret (---) before ca 1841, presumably in Marlboro Dist., SC, or perhaps in Richmond Co., NC. She was born ca 1818/19 in SC. I don't know her maiden name.

They are on the 1850 census in Marlboro. They aren't listed near any of the other Grants.

They are still in Marlboro for the 1860 census. Their sons James and John are next door with their new wives. John and Margaret's younger children (from the 1850 census) are not listed with them. Perhaps they all died in the 1850's. On the other hand I found a Driggers household just two houses from John (listed just after John F. Grant, John G.'s son) that seems to be the some of the same people who had been with John G. back in 1850 and with him in 1870. Were they mistakenly listed as Driggers on this census? I'll include both entries below. A satisfactory explanation would be if Mr. Peter Driggers (16 on this census) had married John's daughter Sarah and the rest of her siblings were living with them at this time, though mistakenly listed under his surname.

It appears that Margaret (---) Grant died in the 1860's, presumably in Marlboro Dist., SC.

John G. Grant married Laura (---) sometime in the 1860's. She was born ca 1848/49 in SC. I don't know her maiden name.

They are on the 1870 census in Marlboro. It is notable though that John G. Grant is a member of the South Carolina Legislature at this time.

I didn't find John G. Grant on the 1880 census in Marlboro. He may have died before then. I found all of his sons on that census with families of their own. I didn't find Laura listed, so she may have died too or remarried.

Children of John G. Grant and Margaret (---) and Laura (---). The 1850 through 1880 census records show 11 children, 10 by the first wife and 1 by the second (or so it would seem).
