This family was listed on most census records with race code of "Mulatto". John Jackson Grant was born ca 1821/22 (per 1850 census), in North Carolina, presumably Greene County. I have no direct evidence, but it seems likely that John is related to Lewis Grant (c1775), as he was the patriarch of the "white" Grant families, and it seems reasonable that Jack is somehow connected to them. My theory (and others have suggested this also) is that John was a son of Nancy Grant (1790/1800) (daughter of Lewis), and born out of wedlock. This works as Nancy did have an apparent son Jacks age with her in 1830, though there is no way to know if it was him or not. Nancy did have two "Free Colored" females with her in 1840 (but no males), so this may be a clue in her favor of being Jack's mother. Another point in her favor is that she had a brother named Needham, and Jack named one of his sons "Needham". Jack would have been about 8 years old for the 1830 census. There were four Grant households in Greene County that year, and only one of them had a male his age, and that was Nancy (1790/1800), daughter of Lewis Grant. She had one male child (white) age 5-9 (born ca 1820/25). This could be Jack. Jack would have been about 18years old for the 1840 census. Nancy was still in Greene County, but had no apparent sons with her (neither White nor "Free Colored"). At that age he could easily have been living with some other family as a hired laborer. Jack married Nancy --- before ca 1843, presumably in Greene County. She was born ca 1824/25. I don't know her maiden name. They were in Greene County for the 1850 census, just a few houses from Richard Grant (c1815). 1850 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1850 GREENE CO, NC Page 244 House/Family # 529/ 529 -- Twp GRANT JOHN 28 M M NONE LISTED NC 1821/1822 GRANT NANCY 25 F M NC 1824/1825 GRANT MARY 7 F M NC 1842/1843 GRANT NANCY 6 F M NC 1843/1844 GRANT JOHN 5 M M NC 1844/1845 GRANT JAMES 3 M M NC 1846/1847 GRANT SUSAN 4 F M NC 1845/1846 GRANT NEIDHAM 1 M M AGE 1&1/2 NC 1848/1849 In 1860, John and family were still in Greene County, in Tysons Marsh District, not near any other Grants. 1860 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1860 GREENE CO, NC Page 325B House/Family # 222/ 222 -- TYSONS MARSH Twp SNOW HILL P.O.
