I (Marty Grant) am not related to the John G. Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.
John G. Grant was born ca 1827/28 in Morayshire, Scotland (or South Morayshire). He was found in Warren Co, NC on the 1850 census living in a hotel (with 36 other people, who's names I did not abstract). His occupation was listed as "Clerk" as were several other men in the hotel.

John G. Grant was the only Grant in Warren County at this time, and as far as I know, he was the first. The only other person in the Hotel who was also born in Scotland was Jeremiah McCormick, age 50, who was also listed as a clerk.
John G. Grant was still in Warren Co, NC for the 1860 census, this time residing with a Bolton family. The census taker for 1860 Warren listed the actual counties of birth for everyone, including John, who was listed as born in S. Morayshire, Scotland (the "S" at the beginning was hard to make out, and may be something else). It could also have said Morsyshire, instead of Morayshire, it was hard to make out.

John may have came from Scotland as a child, or immigrated on his own as an adult. In any event the immigration record (if there is one) would be dated ca 1828 through ca 1850.
