I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Martha Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in her though.
Martha Grant was an apparent widow on the 1850 census. I haven't yet figured out who her husband might have been, or if perhaps she was a single mother instead. She was born ca 1799/1800 in NC, presumably in Northampton County.
Martha's first known child was born ca 1828/29, so it seems that she should be listed on both the 1830 and 1840 census, but she wasn't on either, at least not as a head of household. Her first record that I've found was the 1850 census. She was listed in Northampton Co, NC with three young children. Those same three kids were listed in another household, in a hotel.

The 1840 census shows at least one household that might be where Martha was, but I can't be sure without additional data. That was the Newitt Grant household. His 1840 household fits well with Martha and the three kids, and Newitt wasn't listed on the 1850 census, so he is a strong possibility for Martha's husband.
In 1860, Martha was listed by herself in Northampton Co, NC, with her son Joseph, single, in the previous household.

Martha's three children are proven by the 1850 census.
Joseph C. Grant was born ca 1828/29 in Northampton Co, NC. In 1850 he was listed at home with his mother Martha, and listed again in a Hotel with his sisters, and he was listed as a student. In 1860 he was single, but living by himself in a household next door to his mother.

Margaret Grant was born 1833/34 in Northampton Co, NC. She was home with her mother in 1850 and also listed with her brother Joseph in a hotel on the same census. In 1860 she wasn't at home, so had married or died before then. A Margaret J. Grant married Noah R. Odom 16 Jun 1853. That could be this Margaret. Don't know for sure though.
Susan Grant was born ca 1837/38 in Northampton Co, NC. She was home with her mother in 1850 and also listed with her brother Joseph in a hotel on the same census. In 1860 she wasn't at home, so had married or died before then. A Susan M. Grant married William J. Edwards 14 Jan 1858, this could be this Susan, or perhaps not.
