Mary (---) was born ca 1755/1774 per her age on the 1800 census (26-44). I don't know where she was born (though probably in North Carolina or South Carolina), nor do I know her maiden name. She may have been a Grant by birth or more likely she was a widow, though I don't know who her husband might have been.

Mr. Grant apparently died before ca 1795 for Mary seems to have been on her own by that time. The first record I found for her is in Richmond Co., NC in 1795 when she was mentioned in a land entry to Darby Henagan who entered 100 acres on the north side of Clark's branch of Crooked Creek "including Mary Grant's improvement." (North Carolina Land Entry # 1403, dated 21 Nov 1795).

Mary Grant's "improvement" means that she had already lived on the land and had either cleared some land or built a house or something that "improved" the land. It could have been recent or several years before.

Crooked Creek rises in southern Richmond County and flows south across a corner of present Scotland County (then still part of Richmond), then into Marlboro Co., SC where it continues for many miles. I have not been able to locate Clark's branch of Crooked Creek but I would imagine it is very close to the state line. That could put it within present day Scotland Co., NC (formed 1899 from Richmond) or in present day Richmond and still not be too far from the state line.

Mary wasn't listed on the 1790 census, nor were there any other Grants in Richmond Co., NC that year or in what is now Marlboro Co., SC or very nearby.

Mary Grant is listed on the 1800 census in Marlboro Dist., SC. I'm reasonably certain this is the same Mary mentioned in the 1795 record above, but I'm not totally certain. She was the only Grant in Marlboro in 1800, and there were no Grants at all in neighboring Richmond Co., NC in 1800.

1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Mary Grant was not listed on the 1810 census in Marlboro or anywhere else that I could find. She may have died by then, or perhaps she had remarried or perhaps she was living with one of her married children or other relatives.

The 1800 census is the last record I've found for her to date.

Children of Mr. Grant and Mary (---). The 1800 census seems to show three children at home.
  1. Unknown Son (1784/90)
  2. Unknown Daughter (1784/90)
  3. Unknown Daughter (1784/90)
Unknown Son (1784/90). Mary Grant has an apparent son this age with her in 1800 aged 10-15 (born ca 1784/90).

This could very easily be Malachi Grant (c1790) who was in Marlboro in 1810 and for several years after that. I have no direct proof that he is a son of Mary Grant other than him being in the same area and a good age match.

Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Mary Grant had two apparent daughters this age with her in 1800, aged 10-15 (c1784/90). I have not been able to identify either of them so far.
