A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Randall Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in his family though. He lived in the same county as my ancestors, but doesn't seem to be related to them.

Randall Grant was born ca 1770/75 per the various census records. He may have been born in SC or else moved there while small. He wasn't listed on the 1790 census, though he would only have been roughly 15 to 20 years old. He was probably still at home with his parents, whoever they were. Randall (listed as "Randolph") Grant showed up in Fairfield Dist, SC for the 1800 census, along with a John Grant, and a John Grant Sr. Randolph was on the same page as John Grant Sr, and that makes it seem possible that they are father and son, and that the younger John listed a few pages away was a brother of Randall. None of these were listed on the 1790 census in Fairfield Dist, SC. In 1790 there was only a Lewis Grant listed there, who wasn't found in 1800.

1800 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1800 Fairfield Dist, SC pg 217 Randolph Grant 00100-20100
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 16-25 (1774-1784)	Randall GRANT (1770/75)
1 Female(s) 16-25 (1774-1784)	Sarah ___ Grant (1774/75) wife
2 Female(s) 0-9 (1790-1800)	Daughter?
					Daughter?

The 1810 census shows both John's listed in Fairfield still, one listed as Colonel John Grant. Don't know whether that was "Sr" or "Jr". Randall wasn't listed in 1810. I didn't find him elsewhere in SC or in NC in 1810.

1810 census analysis (based on available evidence):

By 1820 Randall had shown up in Rutherford Co, NC and was listed on the same page as my ancestor Andrew Grant who was only about 10 years older than him. So far I've found no evidence that they are related. Randall Grant didn't own any land in Rutherford, as far as I know, but he did live in the area of south eastern Rutherford County near the community of Cliffside. This was Floyds Creek or High Shoals District, or township. As far as I know my Andrew Grant never lived in that region, but since he didn't own any land either, he could have been renting in that area, though briefly. Or Randal could have been renting in the Mountain Creek area, which seems more likely  based on the names of the neighbors.

1820 census analysis (based on available evidence):

2 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820)	Daughter?

In 1830 Randall and family were still in Rutherford Co, NC but seemed to be in Broad River or Cathies Creek district, based on the neighbors.

Just a few houses away, but on the next page was an apparent widow (or single mother) named Nancy Grant. Her relationship to Randall is unknown. I suspect she is either his daughter, or widowed daughter-in-law. One of Randall's older sons had vanished from his household between 1820 and 1830. He could have married Nancy in that timeframe and then died.

On 19 May 1836 "Randolph Grant Jr" signed as bondsman for the marriage of John B. Mince and Jane Canada in Rutherford Co, NC. This is probably a son of Randolph Sr.

The 1840 census shows Randall still in Rutherford. His son Benjamin is listed near him. The neighbors clearly show they were in the Floyds Creek area (or High Shoal, depending on where the borders were). This area was right along the South Carolina border, and the border with Cleveland County, NC.

Randall died in the 1840's. On the 1850 census his widow Sarah was listed, and with her was a Martha Harper and several Harper children. I've assumed that Martha is their daughter. Sarah and Martha were born in SC.

Sarah wasn't found on the 1860 census, so probably had died by then. I didn't find Martha or any of her Harper children in 1860 either, so perhaps they all moved away.

I don't have direct proof for any of Randall and Sarah Grant's children. But I'm reasonably sure that Benjamin F. Grant and Martha Grant Harper are their children. Randall Grant Jr seems likely also. Census records show they had several other children, but they are unidentified.

Benjamin F. Grant was born ca 1809/10 in SC, probably in Fairfield District. He entered 300 acres of land in Rutherford Co, NC on Camp Creek on 8 Dec 1828 joining the state line. He seemed to be at home with Randall in 1820 and 1830 census. He obtained a marriage bond on 8 June 1834 to marry Tilatha Dyer. Robert Goode was the bondsman. Benjamin was listed as a voter on the 1835 Congressional Elections, in Rutherford Co, NC in High Shoals Precinct.

Benjamin was listed on the 1840 census in Rutherford Co, NC near his father:

1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840)	Lucy GRANT (1835/36) daughter

For some reason, Benjamin was listed twice on the 1850 census in Rutherford Co, NC:

I guess to make up for being listed twice in 1850, he wasn't listed at all in 1860! Apparently his wife Tilatha died before 1859, perhaps in child birth with their last child born ca 1853. On 19 Oct 1859, in Rutherford Co, NC, Benjamin married Mary Jenkins. He was listed as "B.F. Grant" and the bondsman was J.L. Carpenter, and the marriage was performed by J.H. Carpenter, JP.

Although they weren't listed in 1860, I did find Mary listed in 1870. Apparently Benjamin had died in the 1860-1870 timeframe. She was listed in High Shoal Township of Rutherford Co, NC in 1870 as head of household with her step children with her. I didn't find her in 1880.

Randall Grant Jr was probably born ca 1810/15 in Fairfield District, SC. Someone this age was with Randall (Sr) in 1820, 1830 and 1840. He was the bondsman for an 1836 marriage in Rutherford Co, NC. I didn't find him on the 1850 census.

Martha Grant was born ca 1815/16 in SC, probably Fairfield District. She seemed to be at home with her parents in the 1820 census, but the 1830 census for Randal showed no females her age. She didn't show up on the 1840 census either, but by 1850 was living in Rutherford Co, NC with her widowed mother Sarah ___ Grant. She apparently married a Mr. Harper before 1838 and had children born ca 1838 through ca 1849, all surnamed "Harper". I didn't find a marriage record. She wasn't in Rutherford for the 1860 or later census records. I have no direct proof that she is a daughter of Randall and Sarah, but since she was living with Sarah in 1850, and was also born in SC, she seems a likely child of theirs.
