I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Richard S. Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.
Richard S. Grant was born ca 1833/34 somewhere in NC. On the 1850 census he was residing in Orange Co, NC living in a Tavern with many other people. He was listed as a "Student", so he may have been attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I didn't transcribe the names of the rest of the residents of the Tavern, as there were quite a few of them.

Richard S. Grant obtained a marriage bond on 16 Nov 1852 in Orange County to marry Eliza N. Mitchell.
Their marriage was recorded as 18 Nov 1852 per the "Raleigh Register" newspaper dated 24 Nov 1852 which also stated that Richard was from Polk Co, TX and that Eliza was from Chapel Hill, NC. ("Marriage and Death Notices in Raleigh Register and North Carolina State Gazette 1846-1855" Compiled by Carrie L. Broughton, Genealogical Publishing Co. pg 465)
In the 1850 census I found Eliza North Mitchell age 16 in Orange Co, NC with her parents Elisha Mitchell, 56 and Mariah Mitchell, 50. Elisha and wife were from Connecticut, but their children were born in NC. He was a Professor, so that gives us an idea how Eliza and Richard S. Grant may have met, perhaps Professor Mitchell was one of his instructors. Elisha Mitchell is famous in North Carolina and Mount Mitchell is named after him.
Since the marriage account in the newspaper stated that Richard S. Grant was from Polk Co, TX, I assumed that meant his parents probably resided there at that time (1852). I checked the 1850 Polk Co, TX census, and there were no Grant families there. There were also none there in 1860, so I don't have any clues who Richard's parents might have been, or where they originated in North Carolina.
Apparently, sometime after their marriage (1852) Richard and Eliza moved to Texas. However, Richard died sometime between ca 1858 and 1860, and a widowed Eliza came back to Chapel Hill, NC before 1860. In the 1860 census, Eliza, listed as "Mrs. Eliza Grant" was living with her widowed mother Mariah Mitchell and others in Chapel Hill, Orange Co, NC.

I'll have to do some more research in order to find out where this Richard S. Grant came from.
