I (Marty Grant) am not related to the William Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.
William Grant was born ca 1811/12 in South Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census), I don't know what county, nor do I have any clues so far. It would seem a reasonable assumption that he came from one of the eastern counties in South Carolina.
William would have (presumably) been at home with his parents for the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census. Since I don't even know where to begin looking, I'll not list any possibilities here as to who his parents are.
William Grant married Anna --- (or "Lillian") by ca 1842 in New Hanover Co, NC. His being in New Hanover Co, NC at this time may indicate he is somehow related to the Grants of New Hanover and Onslow Co, NC, but none of them were born in SC. "Kitty Parker" age 47 was with them in 1850. I don't know who she is, perhaps she is Anna's mother.

In 1860 William was still in New Hanover Co, NC and listed in Wilmington Township. I'm not entirely sure if "Anna" of 1850 and "Lillian" of 1860 are the same person. The ages do not agree, nor do the names, so Lillian could be a 2nd wife. However, the ages of the rest of the family don't match up very well with those in 1850 either, so perhaps it is insignificant.

I did not find William on the 1870 census, but I found his two youngest children (Mary and Ann) living with the William K. Bell family. William's wife was "Sarah E." and she was the same age as Sarah E. Grant, so I imagine it is the same person. Also, there is a "Ann M. Dougherty" age 43 living there as well, and I wonder, is that Anna, wife of William Grant? If so, then William has died, and she has remarried a Mr. Daugherty, who also died before 1870. Whether or not this is the same person as Anna Grant, she is certainly the mother of Sarah E. Bell as listed on the 1880 census. Further evidence that these are the same folks is that Sarah E. Bell was listed on the 1880 census as born in NC, and that her father was born in SC and her mother in NC. This fits perfectly, as William Grant was born in South Carolina.

Anna M. Dougherty (whether or not the the widow of William Grant) was still with daughter Sarah Bell for the 1880 census in New Hanover County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
William Grant and Ann had five known children, per the 1850 and 1860 census. I have a little bit of additional data on some of the children, but not enough to give them their own sections here. See the register report below for details.
