I (Marty Grant) am not related to the William Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.
William Grant was born ca 1818/19 in NC, possibly in Halifax County. I think he may be a son of James Grant and Elizabeth C. Whitaker of Halifax Co, NC. They had a son named William Grant (named in Elizabeth's Will of 1851) but I have no compelling proof that their William and this William are one and the same. Halifax and Perquimans County are in the same region of NC (north eastern), though not bordering each other. At some point in the past, I came to the conclusion they were one and the same, but I can't figure out how I made the connection. I could easily have been wrong, so just consider it a theory for now. Perhaps someone else told me about it. William did name his oldest son "James", so if he was a traditionalist, the first son was usually named for the child's paternal grandfather (the 2nd son for the child's maternal grandfather, and the 2nd son in this case was "Joseph").
William Grant was a Minister for the Methodist Episcopal Church, and probably travelled around alot, and moved often. His marriage was noted in the "Raleigh Register" newspaper dated 14 Feb 1845 which stated Reverand William Grant married Sarah J. Meador in Hertford. No marriage date was given. "Hertford" the town, is in Perquimans County, NC, not to be confused with "Hertford" the county, which is also in the same region of North Carolina.
As far as I know, there had been no Grant's in Perquimans County, NC prior to William's marriage there. He was probably residing there working as a preacher. He was listed on the 1850 census in Perquimans Co, NC in Suttons Creek district, with his wife and two children. This census shows he owned no land.

I didn't find any Meador families living in Perquimans in 1840 or 1850, so I'm not sure who (or where) Sarah's parents might have been. The nearest one I found was a Joseph C. Meador family in Nansemond Co, VA. No additional data on them.
By 1860 William and family had moved to Northampton Co, NC and were listed just two households from another William Grant family. This is either a major coincidence, or perhaps Rev. William was related to the Northampton Grants. This census shows William with considerable property.
