I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandson of James and Jane (Pack) Henderson.
NOTE: These pages are out of date. I am currently working on a book tentatively titled "Gilbert, Henderson and Stewart Families of Western NC and North GA." It is taking all of my genealogy time, but I've made some major updates to the Hendersons. They are not reflected on this web page which is greatly out of date.
James Henderson was born ca 1790/1800 (per 1840 census) in North Carolina, county unknown. I suspect he is from some western North Carolina county such as Rutherford, but that is just a theory. The proof that he was born in NC is that his surviving children reported their father’s birth place as North Carolina on their 1880 census entries.
I have not yet identified James’ parents, nor have any strong suspects.
James would probably have been with his parents for the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census. There were far too many Hendersons in Western North Carolina those years, so there is no way (without further evidence) to narrow down which of them might be James’ parents.
At some point, James moved to Tennessee, possibly while still a small child, or perhaps as an adult.
James Henderson married Jane Pack on 23 May 1818 in Sumner Co., TN. Jane was born ca 1803/04 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina. I don’t know who her parents were. I strongly suspect that Thomas Pack (c1805 NC) is her brother.
They seem to have left Sumner County shortly after marriage and moved east to McMinn Co., TN. Jane's probable brother Thomas Pack also made that move as did other Sumner County Pack families.
James was listed on the 1830 census in McMinn County, Tennessee. Thomas Pack (probable brother-in-law) was listed next door. **
Sometime between ca 1835 and 1840, James moved his family from Tennessee into Union County, Georgia. They lived in the Gum Log area of Union County, which is very close to the Cherokee County, North Carolina line, and not real far from Polk County, Tennessee.
James Henderson was listed on the 1840 census in Union County, Georgia. He was the only Henderson listed that year. He was between the houses of John Williams and John C. Galaway and just one house from *Samuel Patterson* who is also my ancestor.

James Henderson died sometime between 1840 and 1850 in Union Co, GA.
Jane Henderson and her children were listed on the 1850 census in Union. They were next to son William Henderson and his wife.

For the 1860 census, Jane was living with her son William Henderson, still in Union County.

I did not find Jane on the 1870 census. She may have died in the 1860-70 timeframe, or perhaps she moved to Texas with her daughter Ibiline.
James and Jane Pack Henderson had four children as proven by census and other records, and by family tradition. A fifth child is unproven, but very likely. Her name is Catherine Henderson (c1819) who married Oliver Holcombe.
William Henderson was born ca 1825/26 (per 1850 census), somewhere in East Tennessee. He was probably with his parents for the 1830 census, but I don't have that record yet. He did seem to be with his parents for the 1840 census (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25).
On 28 Apr 1844, William Henderson married Angeline Clark in Union County, Georgia. They were married by William Poteat, Justice of the Peace. Angeline was born ca 1825/26 in North Carolina. I don't know who her parents are. There was an Andrew J. Clark on the 1840 census in Union Co, GA. He could be her father, but his 1840 census entry showed no apparent daughter Angeline's age. By 1850, there were several Clark families in Union Co, GA, any one of which could be Angeline's parents.
William and wife were listed on the 1850 census next door to his widowed mother and his siblings. Although they had a son by this time, he was not listed with them for some reason.

William and Angeline were still in Union County for the 1860 census, with William's widowed mother residing with them. They were next to brother James and to brother Thomas.

William Henderson's name was on a list dated 2 Sep 1861 of Union County men who were eligible for Military Service. He was listed in Gum Log District. I don't know if he actually served during the Civil War or not.
The above record (2 Sep 1861) is the last I have for him in Georgia.
I did not find him nor his family on the 1870 census.
By 1880 he was in Young Co, Texas, and living next to sister Ibiline and her family. Someone named Gramore Henderson, age 26 (born ca 1853/54 in TX) was living with them, listed as nephew. I don't know who his parents were. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
James H. Henderson was born ca 1828/29 (per 1850 census), somewhere in East Tennessee. He was probably with his parents for the 1830 census, but I don't have that record yet. He did seem to be with his parents for the 1840 census (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).
James was home with his widowed mother for the 1850 census ("James" age 21, born TN).
Sometime between 1850 and ca 1853, James married Mary Ann "Polly" --- in Union Co, GA. Polly was born ca 1837/38 in NC. I don't know her maiden name. Some have listed her as a "Stewart", but I don't believe that is correct.
James and family were listed on the 1860 census in Union County next to brother William and his mother, and two houses from brother Thomas.

James and family were on the 1880 census in Union County still near numerous relatives.

I did not find James nor Polly on the 1900 census, though I found many of their children in Union County that year. This means that James and Polly had either died between 1880 and 1900 or else moved away. I suspect they died, for even their younger children were living with various siblings for the 1900 census.
James and Polly had twelve known children.
Ibiline Henderson was born 19 Jan 1831 (per Bryan Gabbard) (or ca 1830/31 per 1850 census), somewhere in East Tennessee. She was probably with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).
Ibiline was home with her widowed mother for the 1850 census ("Ibaline" age 19, born TN).
On 4 Sep 1853, Ibiline Henderson married Thomas Sitton in Union County, Georgia. They were married by E. Gribble, Justice of the Peace.
I had originally lost track of her after her marriage, but was contacted by Bryan Gabbard, a descendant, who told me they went to Young County, Texas where both died.
I was unable to locate them on the 1860 census, though their children were born in North Carolina in that time period.
I found them on the 1870 census in Clay County, NC (borders where they lived in Union Co, GA). ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Between ca 1871 and ca 1874 they moved to Arkansas, where a child was born around that time, and before 1880 they were in Young County, Texas. They were listed on the 1880 census in Young County, next door to brother William Henderson. I don't know which family arrived first, or if they moved there together.
Ibiline died on 30 Dec 1911, and Thomas on 19 May 1898, both in Young County, Texas. All the additional data I have on them is thanks to Bryan Gabbard.
Thomas M. Henderson was born 23 Aug 1834 (per tombstone), somewhere in East Tennessee.
He married Margaret Emaline Stewart on 28 Dec 1857 in Union Co, GA. See their own page for additional information.
