Revision History:
  • 22 Jan 2009 Updated and documented by Marty Grant, relationship unknown.
Ann McCallister was born ca 1828/29 per her age on the 1850 census (21). She was born somewhere in Virginia (now West Virginia) probably in Kanawha County, now Putnam County.

Ann is a child of James McCallister and Elizabeth Grass as proven by the 1850 through 1880 census. James McCallister is found on the 1820 and 1830 census in Kanawha Co., VA (now WV). He is there in 1840 as well, and just a couple of houses from John Hensley (c1780).

Putnam County was formed in 1848 from part of Kanawha and other counties. The McCallisters fell into the new county or else moved there before 1850.

Around this same time (ca 1848) Ann McCallister married a Mr. Hensley in Putnam Co., VA. I have not been able to identify her husband, but it seems probable that he was a son of John Hensley (c1780) who lived nearby.

Mr. Hensley apparently died before the 1850 census, for Ann and her daughter were home with her parents in Putnam County. They were just a few houses from John Hensley (c1780), the only nearby Hensley.

Ann is still in Putnam Co., VA for the 1860 census and still with her parents. No Hensleys were listed nearby. The census taker only used initials.

James McCallister died in the 1860's apparently. Ann was with her widowed mother and other family members for the 1870 census. Widow Lucinda Smith Hensley was nearby, she is probably Ann's sister-in-law, but that isn't for certain.

Ann was still with her mother for the 1880 census. Probable sister-in-law Lucinda Smith Hensley is still nearby.

Ann's mother Elizabeth Grass McCallister died on 12 Jul 1881 in Putnam Co., WV. Her death record showed that granddaughter E. F. Kayser was the informant. That is Elizabeth Frances Hensley, Ann's daughter. Since it was she instead of Ann who provided the information that suggests to me that perhaps Ann had died by then as well, though I could be wrong. I searched the Putnam County death records 1880-1900 for Ann McCallister Hensley but found no record. She was not listed on the 1900 census as far as I could find, so she seems to have died between 1880 and 1900.

Children of --- Hensley and Ann McCallister. The 1850 through 1880 census records shows only one child: Elizabeth Frances Hensley (listed as "Luella" in 1850, but apparently changed later).
