[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am not related to Calvin L. Hensley as far as I know.
Special thanks to Juanita Weaver for data shared on this family. (Juanita was one of the very first Hensley researchers I ever had contact with!). Also special thanks to Janice Pate and Margaret Owens for data shared.
Calvin L. Hensley was born 7 Jun 1829 (Per Military Pension record, shared by Juanita Weaver). His middle name may be "Lycurgus". According to Juanita, some of Joseph Lucurgus Hensley's descendants stated that Calvin's middle name was also Lycurgus, and that Joseph was named after him. This seems reasonable.
Calvin L. Hensley was born in Burke, now McDowell County, North Carolina. This is proven by his pension record, giving his birth place as McDowell Co, NC. Though in 1829, McDowell did not yet exist, still being a part of Burke and Rutherford County at that time.
It is not completely proven, but I believe that Calvin is a son of Jefferson Hensley and Catherine ---. I base this on several bits of circumstantial evidence that all seem to connect Calvin to this family. Here they are in no particular order. Calvin named one of his sons "William Jefferson". Calvin moved to Cherokee Co, NC by 1850 and so did Jefferson's daughter Ann Eliza Hensley Huskins, Jefferson had an apparent son Calvin's age per the 1830 and 1840 census records, who was no longer home in 1850. Jefferson had sons named "James", "John" and "William", and Calvin named sons the same (though these are common names). Janice Pate shared data that Calvin's children had an Aunt named "Catherine", and Jefferson Hensley did have a daughter named Catherine, so that fits. It was also reported that Calvin was born in "McDowell" Co, NC, which is where Jefferson Hensley lived.
The case for Jefferson being Calvin's father is entirely circumstantial, yet I'm very sure it is correct. Some additional evidence would be helpful, but for now I think the circumstantial case is very strong.
Calvin would have been 1 year old or less in 1830, so he should be enumerated in the age "under 5" category (born ca 1825/30) on that census. Jefferson Hensley had one apparent son that age in 1830.
Calvin would have been 10 or 11 years old in 1840, so he should be enumerated in the age 10-14 category (born ca 1825/30). Catherine (widow of Jefferson) had an apparent son that age with her in 1840.
Calvin L. Hensley married Dicy Evaline Dale (or "Evaline Dicy Dale") on 7 Apr 1850 in Cherokee Co, NC. This date, and her full name was given in Calvin's Pension record. (Shared by Juanita Weaver). They were married by Henry Moss, Justice of the Peace.
This marriage location indicates that Calvin had moved from McDowell to Cherokee County around then. He would have turned 21 in the year 1850, so it seems he left home as soon as he could. Evaline was born 7 Mar 1832 in Burke County, North Carolina, daughter of William Dale and Mary Ann York.
No one has been able to locate Calvin and family on the 1850 census. Since they married in Cherokee County, North Carolina in April of that year, and the census was taken as of June, one would think they were still there somewhere. However, they do not show up in that county in 1850. They may have been missed by the census taker, or perhaps listed, but with the wrong surname given. Since Cherokee Co, NC borders Tennessee and Georgia it is possible that they lived in a border area and all the census takers assumed they lived in the "other" state, and they were missed.
They apparently remained in Cherokee County until ca 1855-1858 when they moved to nearby Monroe County, Tennessee. They were listed there on the 1860 census in the 2nd District. They were listed between the families of M. H. Russell and J. H. Johnson.

By 1870, Calvin and family had moved to neighboring Polk County, Tennessee (which also borders Cherokee Co, NC): Calvin Hensley-43 NC, Eveline-37 NC, William J.-17 NC, John-15 NC, James-13 NC, Joseph-11 TN, Jacob-8 TN, Charles-5 TN, Emma-3 TN. Polk County pg 62. (From "Hensley Households" by Laura Schreibman).
Calvin and family were still in Polk County for the 1880 census (in District 7). ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Evaline Dicy Dale Hensley died on 21 Jan 1898 in Unaka, Cherokee County, North Carolina and is buried at Zion Hill Cemetery in Turtletown, Polk Co, TN.
Calvin L. Hensley married Eliza Ann Richards on 1 Jan 1899 in neighboring Fannin Co, GA. She was born 11 Mar 1862. I don't know who her parents were. I believe she was previously married to someone else, a Mr. Wilson, I think.
I don't have them on the 1900 census yet.
Eliza Ann Richards Hensley died on 6 Jul 1906 in Fannin Co, GA. According to Juanita, she is buried with her first husband in Bethel Cemetery in Copperhill, Tennessee (Polk County).
Calvin L. Hensley married Callie Bates on 18 Aug 1907 in Cherokee Co, NC. I have no birth date or parents for Callie yet. Juanita states that Callie was 42 years old in 1910, when applying for a widow's pension, so that puts her birth at ca 1867/68. She was previously married to J. L. Thompson.
Calvin L. Hensley died on 11 Apr 1910 in Unaka, Cherokee Co, NC. He is buried at Zion Hill Cemetery in Turtletown, Polk Co, TN.
Calvin and Evaline had ten children. I don't know if he had any children with his 2nd and 3rd wives. Of his 10 children, I don't have much additional data on them yet. I have full names and full birth and death dates for them mainly due to data by the other researchers mentioned earlier.
