Cedar Hensley was born ca 1775 or before (per his age on the 1820 census of 45 and up). He was born somewhere in Virginia, perhaps Orange County where he lived in the early 1800's. Cedar Hensley's parents aren't known for certain, but it seems very likely that he is a son of John Hensley of Orange Co., VA. They are linked by proximity as they both lived in Orange Co., VA. They are also linked via Cypress Hensley who was almost certainly Cedar's brother. Cypress was definitely associated with John Hensley. None of this proves John is their father, but he is certainly a close relative. Cedar Hensley married Winnifred Thompson in Orange Co., VA on 18 Jan 1808. Cypress Hensley and Armistead Brown were witnesses. George Thompson was bondsman, and the marriage was performed by Jacob Watts. Winnifred Thompson was born ca 1782/83 per her age on the 1850 census (67), born somewhere in Virginia, perhaps Orange County. I don't know who her parents were, but George Thompson (of her marriage bond) could be her father, or perhaps a brother instead. The 1810 census is lost for Orange County, Virginia, but it seems likely Cedar Hensley would have been listed there on that record. Cedar Hensley is listed on the Orange County personal property tax lists each year from 1809 through 1820. I'm not sure but I believe Laura Schreibman shared these records with me:
Cedar Hensley is listed on the 1820 census in Orange Co., VA. He is the only Hensley there at that time. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Orange Co., VA page 92 Cedar Hensley 110001-01101 Slaves=0010-0010 Analysis: 1 Male 45+ (bef 1775) Cedar Hensley (bef 1775) 1 male 10-15 (1804/1810) Beverly Hensley (c1808) son 1 male 0-9 (1810/1820) Winslow Hensley (c1810) son 1 Female 45+ (bef 1775) Winnifred Thompson Hensley (c1783) wife 1 female 16-25 (1794/1804) Daughter? I believe Laura Schreibman shared these records with me. I don't know if 1825 was the last record he was listed on, or just the last record checked.
The family moved a few counties west to Pendleton Co., VA (now WV) in the late 1820's. Cedar Hensley died before 1830, though I don't know if he died in Orange Co., VA or after the move to WV. Winny is listed on the 1830 census in Pendleton Co., VA, the only Hensley there at the time. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Pendleton Co., VA page 52 Winny Hensley 0000200000000-0110101000000 Slaves=000000-201000 Analysis: 2 Males 20-29 (1800/1810) 1-Beverly Hensley (c1808) son 2-Winslow Hensley (c1810) son 1 Female 40-49 (1780/1790) Winnifred Thompson Hensley (c1783) 1 Female 20-29 (1800/1810) Daughter? Hensley (c1822) daughter 0 Slaves By 1850 they had moved into neighboring Randolph County and are listed there on that census. Son Winslow and his family are next door.
I didn't find Winny on the 1860 census. Her son Beverly was still in Randolph with his sister Catherine, but Winny wasn't listed. She probably died in the 1850's in Randolph Co., VA (now WV). |

Children of Cedar Hensley and Winnifred
Thompson.
They had at least five children according to the 1820 through 1850
census records. One of the two unidentified daughters is almost
certainly Elizabeth Hensley who married John Vance in 1831 in
Pendleton Co., VA (WV).
