I (Marty Grant) am not related to Enos Hensley as far as I know.

Enos Hensley was born ca 1815/16 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC).

I don't know who Enos Hensley's parents were, but I've seen him listed as a son of Henry Hensley (c1781) and Mary Howard, and as a son of Lewis Hensley and Nancy Howard. I don't know which, if either of these is correct. Enos named his oldest son "Lewis", and his next one "Henry", so both possible father's are represented by namesakes. Daughters named "Mary" and "Nancy" are also there, so the children's names don't help narrow it down any.

Enos Hensley was listed next door to Henry Hensley (c1781) in the 1850 census. This doesn't prove they are father and son, but is good circumstantial evidence. This makes me "lean" towards Henry as his probable father, but it is still far from proven (unless there is evidence I'm unaware of).

Assuming that Henry was Enos' father, then Enos was probably home with him for the early census records (1820 and 1830), however, Henry has not been found on the 1820 census. He was not in Buncombe Co, NC then, nor elsewhere as far as I've found.

In 1830, Henry Hensley was in Buncombe Co, NC, and he did have four sons in the 1810/20 age groups (2 in 1810/15, and 2 in 1815/20). One of these could be Enos. For the record, only a few other Hensley households had a son this age in 1830: Lewis Hensley (one 1815/20, already accounted for though); James Hensley (one 1810/15, and one 1815/20, both accounted for); James B. Hensley (he was born ca 1805, but he had a male 1810/15 with him, probably a brother); Berry Hensley (one male 1815/20); William A. Hensley (one male 1810/15, and one 1815/20, probably his brothers); John Hensley (one male 1810/15); Colbert Hensley (one 1815/20); and Hickman M. Hensley (one 1815/20).

Though Enos would "fit" in the above seven households, I still believe he belongs to Henry, but some stronger evidence would be nice.

In 1833, Yancey County was formed from Buncombe County, including the area where the Hensley's resided.

Enos Hensley married Caroline --- ca 1830/1839 in Yancey Co, NC. I've seen others list Caroline's maiden name as "Gilbert", but I don't know what evidence this is based on. They did name one of their children "Gilbert Hensley", so perhaps that is the source. Caroline was born ca 1821/22 in NC. I am also a Gilbert researcher, so her ancestry is of interest to me. My own Gilberts were from Yancey County, NC, but I can't place her into my family. There were several Gilberts in Buncombe County, and perhaps she belongs to one of them (if her maiden name was actually Gilbert).

Enos Hensley was listed on the 1850 census in Yancey Co, NC. He was just a few houses from Fielding Hensley, who might easily be Enos' brother (he named one of his sons "Fielding"). Enos' next door neighbors were two apparent widows, Massy Higgins and Elizabeth Bailey.

Enos Hensley and family were still in Yancey Co, NC for the 1850 census. They were next door to his suspected parents Henry and Mary Hensley. Their next door neighbor on the other side was Rufus C. Phillips.

Enos and family moved to Harlan Co, KY in the 1850's, apparently between ca 1856 and ca 1859.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Harlan Co, KY, where several other Yancey County Hensley families had moved previously. They weren't listed very close to any of the others though.

I have no additional data on this family. Yancey County, NC and Harlan County, NC records may reveal a great deal about them.

Children

Enos and Caroline Hensley had 10 children by the time of the 1860 census. At present, I have little additional data on them.
