Fretwell G. Hensley was born ca 1823/24 per his age on the 1860 census (36). He was born somewhere in Virginia (per 1850 census), either in Albemarle Co., VA or Kanawha Co., VA (now WV).

Fretwell is a son of John Hensley (c1780) and Frances Smith. This is proven by John's death record (1870 Putnam Co., WV) where Fretwell in the informant, and listed as John's son.

Fretwell G. Hensley married Dicy McCallister on 2 Mar 1847 in Cabell Co., VA (now WV). Dicy was born ca 1822/23 in Virginia (both per 1860 census). I don't know who her parents are, but she may be a daughter of Richard McCallister (c1802) and Sarah (c1801), who they lived next to in 1850.

Putnam County was formed in 1848 from a portion of Cabell and other counties. The Hensleys fell into the new county and are listed there on the 1850 census next to Dicy's possible parents. Unfortunately the census taker mangled their names pretty badly. I almost didn't find them.

They are in Cabell Co., VA for the 1860 census, but not listed near any of the other Hensleys in that county.

I wasn't able to find them in 1870. I searched for mangled spellings and in other counties, but couldn't come up with them.

They are on the 1880 census in Cabell.

I don't know when Fretwell or Dicy died, though sometime after 1880, presumably in Cabell Co., WV.

Children of Fretwell Hensley and Dicy McCallister. The 1850 through 1880 census records shows several children. Some of their births are recorded in the Putnam County birth records.
