I (Marty Grant) am not related to George W. Hensley as far as I know.

George W. Hensley (probably "George Washington Hensley", but the middle name is just a guess based on common usage at that time) was born ca 1825/26 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC).

I don't know who George's parents were, but an Article in the book "Heritage of Buncombe County, NC" Volume 2 shows him to be a son of "Greenberry Hensley", which is probably meant to be the same person as Berry Hensley. This could be true, but I don't know what the evidence for that is.

Berry Hensley did have an apparent son this same age, per the 1830 and 1840 census records. This could easily be George, but I can't say for sure if it was.

Assuming Berry is George's father, then George seems to be with Berry in 1830, age under 5 (born ca 1825/30), and with him in 1840, age 10-14 (born ca 1825/30).

George W. Hensley married Elizabeth --- ca 1840/50, probably closer to 1850. The same article I mentioned above, gives her maiden name as "McCourry" and says she is a daughter of James L. McCourry. This could be correct, as "James L. McCurry" is just five houses from George and Elizabeth Hensley on the 1850 census.

George and Elizabeth were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County, NC. They had no children, so that suggests they were recently married. Elizabeth's supposed parents, James and Jane McCurry were listed just five houses away. George's neighbors on either side were George Byrd and Nathan Deyton.

George and Elizabeth were still in Yancey Co, NC for the 1860 census, but not near any other Hensleys.

Apparently, Elizabeth died between 1860 and 1870, for by 1870 George had a new wife, Sarah E. ---. I don't know her maiden name. She was born ca 1850/51, and I found no marriage record for them in Yancey County.

George and Sarah were on the 1870 census in Yancey Co, NC next to his son James who was now married. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

George and Sarah were in Jacks Creek Township of Yancey County for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I have not traced George beyond this point. Yancey County records may hold additional information on them, just waiting to be found.

Children

George and Elizabeth had at least three children, and he seemed to have several by his second wife Sarah. Since I have not traced this family beyond that point yet, I'll not discuss them individually until more data is found.
