I (Marty Grant) am not related to George Hensley as far as I know.

George Hensley was born ca 1825 or thereabouts (rough guess as to his birth year), in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC). I don't have a better handle on his birth date because the only records I have on him (so far) are court records concerning his death and estate.

I have no clues as to who George's parents might have been. At present, there are way too many possibilities.

George Hensley married Sophronia --- sometime prior to ca 1846, presumably in Yancey Co, NC. I don't know what her maiden name might have been.

George Hensley served in the Mexican War as a Private in Company D. He was mustered in on 14 Feb 1847 and died in Mexico on 8 Jun 1847, per testimony of Captain Tilman Blalock from Yancey Co, NC Court Minutes dated 21 Apr 1848 (thanks to Sandra Fender for sharing this record.)

On the same date (21 Apr 1848), the following was entered in the Court minutes: "It is proved in court that Suffrona Hensley is the widow of George Hensley and that Jeremiah Hensley is the only child
and heir at law of George Hensley". (From Yancey Co, NC Court Minutes, thanks to Sandra Fender for sharing this).

On 20 Oct 1848, J. M. McElroy was appointed administrator of the estate of George Hensley, deceased. (From Yancey Co, NC Court Minutes, thanks to Sandra Fender for sharing this).

I did not find Sophronia Hensley listed on the 1850 census. She may have died by then, or remarried. Their son Jeremiah was residing with John G. McMahan (c1822) and Elizabeth S. McMahan (c1828). Was Elizabeth S. McMahan the same as Soprhonia? The "S" middle initial makes it seem like a strong possibility. Apparently Elizabeth and John McMahan only married ca 1848/49, which works well with the other evidence, and explains why Jeremiah Hensley was with them in 1850.

In October 1850, another Court record was recorded, stating "Court finds that Jeremiah Hensley is the only minor heir of George Hensley. His mother is Sophrona Hensley." (From Yancey Co, NC Court Minutes, thanks to Sandra Fender for sharing this).

I have no additional data on this family at present.

Children

At present, I have no additional data on George and Sophronia's son Jeremiah Hensley.
