Ichabod Hensley (1813-aft 1900) and Mariah Ramey and Elizabeth Horne of Scott Co., VA
Hensley pages [Hensley Home] - [Table of Contents] - [Virginia] This page [Children’s section]
Ichabod Hensley is my 1st cousin, 6 times removed. His father, Fielding, is a proven brother of my ancestor Larkin Hensley.
Ichabod Hensley was born March 1813 per the 1900 census. This agrees with his age on the 1860 census (47), but is off by one year on all his other census entries: 36 in 1850, 56 in 1870 and 66 in 1880, all of which suggest he was actually born in 1814. However, it’s close enough.
He was born in Washington (now Scott) Co., VA.
Ichabod Hensley is a proven son of Fielding Hensley and Nancy Cornett as named in a 1833 court case (see Fielding’s page for more on that). His marriage record in 1866 also proves his parents as Fielding and Nancy.
He was almost certainly named for his uncle Ichabod Hensley (1780/82), and perhaps for his 1st cousin Ichabod C. Hensley (c1792) who was still in Scott Co., VA when he was born. Since there were several men named Ichabod Hensley during this era, visit my page on that subject for more information.
Ichabod seems to be home with his parents for the 1820 census as a male under 10 (born ca 1810/20).
He seems to still be home with his parents in 1830, aged 15-19 (born ca 1810/15).
Ichabod would have turned 16 around 1829 or 1830, however he doesn’t appear by name on the 1829 through 1832 tax lists. He first appears under his own name in 1833.
Achabud Hensley was listed on the 1833 tax list in Scott Co., VA. He had one white male over 16.
Achabud Hensley was listed on the 1834 tax list in Scott Co., VA. He had one white male over 16 and 1 horse.
Acebud Hensley was listed on the 1835 tax list in Scott Co., VA. He had one white male over 16 and either 2 or 3 horses.
On 1 Feb 1835 Ichabod Hensley married Mariah Ramey in Scott Co., VA. They were married by John Strong. Mariah J. Ramey was born ca 1811/12, presumably in Washington (now Scott) Co., VA. I don’t know who her parents were. There were nearly as many Ramey families in Scott as there were Hensleys. I’ve made no attempt to sort them out.
Ichabod Hensley was listed on the 1836 tax list in Scott Co., VA. He had one white male over 16, and 1 horse.
Ichabod Hensley was listed on the 1837 tax list in Scott Co., VA. He had one white male over 16.
Icabod Hensley was listed on the 1839 tax list in Scott Co., VA. He had one white male over 16, and 2 horses.
Ichabod is listed on the 1840 census in Scott Co., VA. Jeremiah Ramey (c1810/20) was just a few houses away. I’d wager he was Mariah’s brother for she named one of her sons Jeremiah.

Ichabod Hensley apparently died between 1900 and 1910, presumably in Scott Co., VA.
Ichabod Hensley and Mariah Ramey had eight children together.
Ichabod and Elizabeth Horne had no children as far as I’m aware, but she had a son, Emmet Newton Horn, apparently born out of wedlock ca 1857. I didn’t find him on the 1860 census, but he was with his mother and Ichabod in 1870 and 1880. In 1900, Ichabod was living with Emmet’s widow.
