The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Jesse Hensley as far as can be proven. He did live in the same counties (Washington and Scott Co., VA) as my ancestor Larkin Hensley (c1761-1806)

Special Thanks to Ruthe Muench and Laura Schreibman for information shared on this family.

Jesse Hensley was born ca 1785/86 per his age of 64 on the 1850 census. He was born in Virginia per the same source. He may have been born in Washington County where he lived for many years or in the part of Washington that later became Scott County.

I have not been able to determine who Jesse's parents were. Researchers going back several decades thought he might be a son of Fielding Hensley (c1761), but the evidence is lacking. I've found nothing to prove they are closely related other than them living in the same general area.

The 1790 and 1800 censuses are lost for Virginia.

Jesse Hensley first appears on the tax lists in Washington Co., VA in 1806 where he is listed with 1 tithe, no horses and no slaves. This is about the time he turned 21.

For some reason Jesse was not listed on the 1807 tax list.

In 1807 Jesse Hensley was listed as a militiaman in Washington County in Capt. Goffi's company, 2nd Battalion, 105th Regiment. (Clark, Gerald H. The Militia of Washington County, VA Officers 1777-1835 Militia Men 1798-1835. 1979)

Jesse appears on the personal property tax lists in Washington County in 1809, but was not listed in 1810.

There is an entry on the 1810 census that may be Jesse Hensley. It is written as "Ithe Hensley" though the given name is very difficult to decipher.  Look at the image below.

Is this a badly written Jesse Hensley? Could be, but there is no way to be sure. I have also theorized that this entry is for Ichabod Hensley instead, but I don't know. The census taker made his "J" and "I" exactly the same way so there is no way to be sure which this is. Whoever it is there is an older female, and two men and one woman all in the same age group. Could be a widowed mother and three kids though there is no way to know for sure who is who.

On 1 Sep 1813 Jesse Hensley married Susannah Peters in neighboring Sullivan Co., TN. Her maiden name and the marriage date and place are proven by his War of 1812 Pension file. Susannah was born ca 1798/99 (per age of 51 on 1850 census). She is a proven daughter of John Peters and Catherine (---) of Scott County.

For the War of 1812 (1812-1815), Jesse Hensley enlisted on 29 Oct 1813 in Washington Co., VA and was discharged on 11 Mar 1814 in Norfolk, VA. He served in Capt. Wilber Jane's company. (Pension File WO 6751 and WC 3627)

In 1814 Scott County was formed from the western part of Washington, taking several of the Hensleys into the new county, and apparently including Jesse.

Jesse did not appear on the 1815 tax list in Scott County.

Jesse Hensley was listed on the 1832 Scott County tax list with 1 white male over 16, and 2 horses.

Jesse wasn't listed on the 1833, 1834 or later tax lists in Scott County. This appears to be the timeframe they left Virginia and moved to Owen Co., IN. I don't know why they moved there, but some other Washington and Scott County Hensleys moved to neighboring Monroe Co., IN prior to this, and David Minnick and wife Celia Hensley (c1794) also moved to Owen Co., IN. Perhaps Celia is Jesse's sister.

Jesse Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Owen Co., IN. They were the only Hensleys in that county at the time. Isaac Hartsock was a few houses away. Someone of that same name had been in Scott Co., VA in 1830.

Jesse Hensley died 11 Apr 1858 in Owen Co., IN (per War of 1812 pension file.)

I wasn't able to find Susannah Peters Hensley on the 1860 census.

Susan was listed on the 1870 census in Owen Co., IN next door to son John. She was living alone. Of some significance is the fact that Martin Van Buren Hensley (1835) son of James Hensley (c1804) is just two houses away. One might assume this shows a close relationship between James and Jesse, but they were married to Peters sisters, so Martin and John are 1st cousins through their mothers. Their relationship through their fathers is unknown.

I was unable to find Susannah on the 1880 census. Her son John was still in Owen County, Indiana.

Susannah Peters Hensley died 23 Nov 1888 (per death certificate, shared by Laura Schreibman).

Children of Jesse and Susannah (Peters) Hensley. Jesse Hensley and wife seem to have had only two children per the census records. One of those is a son John Hensley (1824), the other is a daughter born ca 1820/25, home with them in 1830, gone by 1840.
