The author (Marty Grant) is not related to John A. Hensley as far as can be determined. He did live in the same county (Knox Co, TN) as my ancestor Samuel Hensley (1801-1852) though he was born after Samuel left that county.

John A. Hensley was born ca 1834/35 per his age of 15 on the 1850 census. He was born in Tennessee, county unknown. He was in Knox County later on, but I don't know if he was born there or not.

I do not know who John's parents are, but it seems very likely that he is connected to Anthony Hensley (c1791) who was also in Knox County. Anthony did have an unknown son born ca 1835/40 with him in 1840 census. This could easily be John. John could be a brother to William A. Hensley (c1829) who was near him in 1850 Knox, and who also later moved to Hamilton County, Tennessee.

John was presumably with his parents for the 1840 census, but not knowing who his parents were, I can't confirm this. Like I said before, Anthony Hensley (c1791) did have an apparent son this age with him that year in Knox Co, TN. This could be John. There were no other Hensleys in Knox County in 1840.

John Hensley was residing with Nicholas Barger (c1802 TN) and his wife Mary Sterling (c1797 TN), relationship unknown. They were just a few houses from Mary Hensley (c1798), possible ex-wife of Anthony Hensley (c1791).

Who were the Bargers? There was a George W. Barger Hensley (1816) in Knox County also. What is the connection between the two families? Nicholas Barger married Polly Sterling on 6 Jan 1825 in Knox Co., TN. Is John related to one of them? He could just be a hired laborer and not related at all.

John A. Hensley married Elizabeth J. Henderson on 4 Dec 1856 in Knox Co, TN. They were married by David Nelson, JP, and John P. Barger was bondsman.

Elizabeth was born ca 1837/38 (per 1860 and 1870 census) in Tennessee. I don't know who her parents were, nor where she was born. There was no Elizabeth Henderson in Knox in 1850.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Knox County next door to probable brother Jacob Hensley, son of Anthony Hensley (c1791), though listed as "Henson" instead of Hensley. I'm pretty sure this is indeed the right family in spite of the wrong surname. This record lists the middle initial as "D" whereas the marriage record shows "A." I don't know which is more accurate, but considering they got the surname wrong on the census, I can't put too much stock in the middle initial from the same record.

John A. Hensley died during the 1860's for Elizabeth and children were listed without him on the 1870 census in Hamilton County. William A. Hensley (c1829) had also moved to Hamilton from Knox, so that may show a close relationship, or perhaps just a coincidence. John's death may have been due to the Civil War (1861-1865) but I have not checked the records for him for there are too many John Hensleys listed.

Elizabeth was listed as head of household in 1870 census in Hamilton County. She was not listed in the same township with William A. Hensley's family. The next household contained a Minerva Housley, age 18. The surname is pretty clearly written, so I'm sure she isn't a Hensley unless completely misspelled.

Elizabeth married William Brandon sometime between 1870 and 1880, either in Hamilton County, or in neighboring Marion County, Tennessee were they were by 1880.

In 1880 they were listed in Marion County, Tennessee (which is next to Hamilton) with children Mary and William Hensley with them, and with a Hensley grandchild, but no Brandon children. They were the only Hensleys in Marion County in 1880.

I wasn't able to find the Brandons nor any of the Hensley children on the 1900 census.

Children of John A. Hensley and Elizabeth Henderson.

John and Elizabeth had 3 children per the 1860 and 1870 census records. I haven't found much additional data on any of them yet.
