I (Marty Grant) am not related to John Hensley as far as I know.

John Hensley was born ca 1837/38 in North Carolina (both facts per 1860 census). I don't know what county, but I'd suspect Yancey County is the most likely place, but not the only choice. He could also be from Caswell County or one of the other North Carolina counties containing Hensleys.

I don't know who John's parents were. John might be somehow related to Robert Hensley (1760), who was the patriarch of most of the Roane County Hensleys.

John was probably home with his parents for the 1840 and 1850 census, but I don't know where to look. The 1850 census for Yancey County, North Carolina shows several John Hensleys close enough in age to be this same person, but I don't have enough data to narrow down the list.

John Hensley was in Roane County, Tennessee by 1853, for on 28 Oct 1853 "John Henslee" obtained a marriage bond there to marry Catherine Wallace. They married on 2 Nov 1853. Catherine was born ca 1834/35 in Tennessee. I don't know who her parents were.

John and Catherine were listed on the 1860 census in Roane County, in District 5.

Fred Salter told me that John Hensley was "killed by rebels" in April 1862, (as recorded in Catherine's widows pension application.).

On 21 Oct 1866, widow Catherine Wallace Hensley married Henry Miles in Roane County, Tennessee.

I don't have them on the 1870 census yet.

They were still in Roane for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

John and Catherine had 5 children, and Catherine also had at least two more children with her second husband. I don't have much data on any of these 7 children so far.
