John is probably a son of Mary Hensley (bef 1765) of Rockingham. I have no proof at all to connect him to her, but she was the only known Hensley in the county old enough to be his parent. It is possible that he came into Rockingham from somewhere else and isn't closely related to Mary, but it is hard to say based on the scant evidence I have so far.

Mary Hensley is listed on the 1810 census in Rockingham. She has one male with her age 10-15 (born ca 1794/1800). That could be John if he was born ca 1800.

I didn't find Mary on the 1820 census. John would have been too young to be a head of household so he wasn't listed either.

John Hensley is listed on the 1830 census in Rockingham.  The census is alphabetical so I can't tell if he was near the other Hensleys or not. Based on the ages of their children it looks like John and his wife married between 1820 and 1825, presumably in Rockingham Co., VA (no marriage record found for them).

They are not listed on the 1840 census in Rockingham as far as I could find. They must have moved away, but I don't know to where. There are numerous John Hensleys listed in 1840 in other counties and states. I didn't find them in 1850 though I found some possible matches, but none of them really seem to be the same family.
