Miriam Hensley (c1822) and Berry Calloway of Yancey Co, NC

I (Marty Grant) am not related to Miriam Hensley as far as I know.

Miriam Hensley was born ca 1821/22 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC).

I have no clues at present as to who Miriam's parents might have been.

Miriam was probably home with her parents for the 1830 and 1840 census.

Miriam had a relationship with Alfred Briggs ca 1841, that produced a child out of wedlock.

In February 1842, in Yancey County Court, the State of North Carolina brought suit against Alfred Briggs with the charge of "Bastardy on the body of Mary (sic) Hensley". Though this says "Mary", other records show it was Miriam. (From Yancey Co, NC Court Minutes, thanks to Sandra Fender for sharing this record).

Miriam Hensley married Berry C. Calloway between 1842 and 1849. He apparently had been married before, as he had children older than their possible marriage date.

They were listed together on the 1850 census in Yancey Co, NC, with Miriam's daughter Sarah Hensley residing with them.

Apparently Miriam died sometime between 1850 and 1854, for in Spring Court, 1854, the court ordered that "Sarah A. E. Hensley, daughter of Miriam Calloway, deceased, now 13, be bound to her reputed father, Alfred Briggs.". (From Yancey Co, NC Court Minutes, thanks to Sandra Fender for sharing this).

"Sarah A. Hensley", age 18 was residing with Alfred Briggs, age 61 on the 1860 census in Yancey Co, NC.
