Revision History:

20 Jun 2008 Reformatted by Marty Grant. Change of Address for Gordon Hensley.

Over the years, I have had numerous people share data with me on this particular family. Somewhere in my disorganized notes are the names of those I should thank, and when I can find them, I'll list them here. There is also a couple of articles in "The Heritage of Cherokee County" Volume II which contains a great deal of data about this family, most of which I am not including here, mainly since they are undocumented family stories. They may be entirely true, but I'll leave that for others to decide. Check out the articles if you can find the book.

Several of Ralzamore's children filed Indian Claims in 1907 (Gurion Index) based on their mother being part Indian. These claims contain a wealth of genealogical information.

"Ralzamore Markham Hensley" was born ca 1813/14 (per 1850, 1860, and 1870 census) in Burke Co, NC (per 1860 census), probably in the section that later became McDowell County.

As far as his name goes, I have no direct proof of his middle name, which was shared with me by another researcher. Some researchers also give his middle name as "Marcus" instead. I don't know which is correct. Various records do show his middle initial was "M". Also, his first name is spelled different ways each time it appears on a record. It looks like "Ralzy" or "Ralzey" might be a shortened (nickname) version of his name that he used.

Ralzamore is a proven son of Benjamin Hensley (c1776) and Elizabeth --- as shown by Gurion Index (1907) Indian applications by Ralzy's son Fielden and siblings showing their grandfather was "Benjamin" of Monroe Co, TN. Circumstantial evidence also supports Ralzy being a son of Benjamin.

Ralzy would have been about 6 years old by the time of 1820 census, so if home with his parents that year he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). Benjamin Hensley did have an apparent son that age with him in Burke County, North Carolina.

Ralzy would have been about 16 years old by the time of the 1830 census, so he ought to be in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1810/15). His parents had moved to Monroe Co, TN by then, but had no son that age, but did have one close enough in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20).

Benjamin moved his family to Union County, Georgia (now Towns County, Georgia) before 1840, and it appears Ralzy went also, for on 29 Jan 1840, he married Sarah Morgan there.  (The marriage record gave "R. Henslee" and "Sary Morgain"). Sarah was born ca 1816/17 (per 1850 census) in either Georgia (per 1850 census) or in North Carolina (per 1870 and 1880 census). Her father was George W. Morgan, per the 1907 Gurion Indian claims filed by her various children and grandchildren. I don't know who her mother was.

Although they married prior to the taking of the 1840 census, they did not appear to be listed in their own household. However, it seems that they may be at home with Ralzy's parents in Union Co, GA, for they did have "extra" people of the approximate ages to match Ralzy and his new wife Sarah.

They remained in Union County, Georgia until sometime after 1846 when they moved to neighboring Cherokee County, North Carolina, where they were listed on the 1850 census. No other Hensleys were in Cherokee County at that time, except for two known Hensley females who were married and with new surnames by then. They were not nearby, but both are probably cousins to Ralzy. Ralzamore and family lived in the region of the Valley River (Valleytown Township). This put them a good distance from his parents still in Union County, Georgia at this time, though the counties border each other.

They were still in Cherokee County for the 1860 census. The census taker this year did a wonderful thing and included everyone's birth place down to the county (only state was required), so this is very helpful to researchers. Unfortunately, Sarah's birth place was illegible, though I can say with certainty it begins with an "M" and is 5 or 6 letters in length. It might say "Monroe", which if it does, is obviously referring to Monroe Co, TN. Honestly, it looks like it says: Mamol " (with the ditto mark meaning "NC"). It may be reference to a town and not a county.

By 1880 they had moved to neighboring Towns County, Georgia, possibly in the same area they had lived many years before when it was still part of Union County. They were next door to son William Hensley and his wife.

The family apparently went back to Cherokee County, North Carolina sometime after 1880.

According to other researchers, Sarah Morgan Hensley died on 6 Jul 1884 in Cherokee Co, NC. I don't know what the source of that death date is.

I did not find Ralzy on the 1900 census in Cherokee County, so he may have been in Georgia that year.

He died on 28 Jun 1900, though where I don't know, nor do I know the source for his date of death.

Children of Ralzamore and Sarah Morgan Hensley. Ralzamore and Sarah had nine children as proven by the various census records. Some of these children are also proven by the various 1907 Gurion Indian claims.

1.      Elizabeth J. Hensley (1841)

2.      Fielden Hampton Hensley (1842)

3.      James Hensley (1844)

4.      John Hensley (1846)

5.      Benjamin Hensley (1850)

6.      Mary Catherine Hensley (1852)

7.      Margaret Ann Hensley (1854)

8.      William R. Hensley (1856)

9.      Laura H. Hensley (1859)

Elizabeth J. Hensley was born ca 1841/42 (per 1850 census) or 20 Mar 1841 (source unknown) in Union County, Georgia (per 1850 census). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census ("Elizabeth" age 8, born GA), and still home with them in 1860 ("Eliza J." age 16, born Union GA). She was not home in 1870, so probably married by then.

I don't know who she married, but somewhere I found her death date of 16 Feb 1882, but I don't have a source for that, so I don't know if it is accurate, nor do I know where she died.

Fielden Hampton Hensley was born ca 1842/43 (per 1850 census) or 19 Jun 1842 (source unknown) in Union County, Georgia (per 1850 census). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Hampton" age 7, born GA), and still home with them in 1860 ("Fielden H." age 14, born Union GA).

I did not find him in 1870.

However, sometime before ca 1877, Fielden H. Hensley married Ann --- in Cherokee Co, NC. (No record found). She was born ca 1858/59 in North Carolina. I don't know her maiden name, though other researchers show her as "Mary Ann Reagle" (or Ragle), which could be correct, but I don't know what the source for that is.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Cherokee County, North Carolina in Valleytown Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

James Hensley was born ca 1844/45 (per 1850 census) or 14 Jun 1844 (source unknown) in Union County, Georgia (per 1850 census). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("James" age 5, born GA), and still home with them in 1860 ("James", age 13, born Union GA).

I did not find him in 1870. From some source I have his death date as 25 May 1862, which was during the Civil War timeframe, so that may have been a factor in his death.

John Hensley was born ca 1845/46 (per 1850 census) or 14 Aug 1846 (source unknown) in Union County, Georgia (per 1850 census). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("John" age 4, born GA), but not home in 1860.

I did not find him in 1860. From some source I have his death date as 25 May 1856, which, if correct, would explain his absence from the 1860 census.

Benjamin Hensley was born ca 1850 (per 1850 census) or 6 Aug 1851 (source unknown, but it has to be wrong) in Cherokee County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1870 census) or Union County, Georgia (per 1860 census). I don't know which birth place is correct for Benjamin, whether Union Co, GA or Cherokee Co, NC.

He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Benjamin" age 3 months, born NC), and still home with them in 1860 ("Benjamin", age 12, born Union GA), and still home in 1870 ("Benjamin", age 19, born NC).

"Benjamin Henslee" married Anna Bradley on 26 Mar 1876 in Cherokee County.

I have no data on them after this.

Mary Catherine Hensley was born ca 1850 (per 1860 census) or 27 Aug 1852 (source unknown) in Cherokee County, North Carolina (per 1860 census). She was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("Mary C." age 10, born Cherokee NC), and still home with them in 1870 ("Mary", age 17, born NC).

On 13 Aug 1874, William C. Anderson married "Mary C. Hensley" in Cherokee Co, NC. William was born April 1852 (per 1900 census), in Tennessee, son of Perry Anderson and Nancy Farr.

They were listed on the 1880 census in neighboring Graham County, North Carolina. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

They were still in Graham County for the 1900 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Margaret A. Hensley was born ca 1852/53 (per 1860 census) or 30 Jun 1854 (source unknown) in Cherokee County, North Carolina (per 1860 census). She was home with her parents in 1860 ("Margaret A.", age 7, born NC), and home with in 1870 ("Margaret" age 15, born NC), and still home in 1880 ("Margaret A.", age 21, born NC).

I have no data on Margaret after 1880.

William R. Hensley was born ca 1855/56 (per 1860 census) or 6 Jun 1856 (source unknown) in Cherokee County, North Carolina (per 1860 census). He was home with his parents in 1860 ("William.", age 4, born NC), and home with in 1870 ("William" age 13, born NC).

On 16 Oct 1879, "Wm R. Hensley" married "Dora A. Bryson" (Eudora Ann Bryson) in Cherokee County, North Carolina. Dora was a daughter of Joseph Holmes Bryson and Nancy Caroline Cruise,  both of whom are related to me. See the page for Joseph's parents at James N. Bryson and Ann Gross, and the page for Nancy's parents (William Cruise and Emily Winfrey) at Caleb Winfrey (c1800) and Arabella Moody.

William and Dora moved to neighboring Towns County, Georgia before 1880, and were listed there on that census next door to his parents.

I don't have them in 1900 yet.

In 1910, I found William and Dora in Macon County, North Carolina in Franklin Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I have no data on them after this.

Laura H. Hensley was born ca 1859  (per 1860 census) or 28 Dec 1859 (source unknown) in Cherokee County, North Carolina (per 1860 census). She was home with her parents in 1860 ("Laura.", age 7 months, born NC), and home with in 1870 ("Laura" age 11, born NC), and still home in 1880 ("Laura H.", age 19, born NC).

I have no data on her after 1880.
