I (Marty Grant) am not related to Ruffin Hensley as far as I know.

Special thanks to Cindy Stamps for data shared on this family. I had data on widow Sallie Hensley, but Cindy's data proves that her husband was Ruffin Henslee, died ca 1848.

Ruffin Henslee was born sometime unknown in Caswell County, North Carolina. I'd guestimate his birth date at ca 1810-20 or thereabouts, as his wife was born ca 1816, and it is reasonable to assume they were close in age.

Based on proximity and circumstantial evidence, it seems very likely that Ruffin is a son of William Henslee and Mary Milberry Pleasant (who were just a few houses from widow Sallie in 1850).

Ruffin was probably home with his parents for the early census records. Since I don't know his birth date, I can't do an effective census analysis, but suffice it to say that William Henslee had several unidentified sons, notably, four of them born in the 1810-20 timeframe, and 2 born ca 1820/25, all unidentified. Ruffin is very likely one of these unknown sons.

Ruffin did not appear as head of household on the 1840 census, so it seems likely he was still home with his parents that year. Of his unknown sons, William only had two still home in 1840, one born ca 1815/20 and one born ca 1820/25. It stands to reason that one of these is Ruffin.

Ruffin Henslee married Sarah "Sallie" --- sometime between ca 1840 and ca 1843, presumably in Caswell County, though no record was found. Sallie was born ca 1815/16 in Gates County, North Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know her maiden name. (Since she was born in Gates County, it is possible that Ruffin went there to marry her, thus explaining the lack of a marriage bond in Caswell County).

Ruffin Henslee died sometime between ca 1846 (birth date of last child) and 1848, for on 27 Jun 1848, an Inventory of his Estate was made. (Caswell Co, NC Will Book Q page 26, shared by Cindy Stamps).

On 14 Jul 1848, a years allotment was made to widow Sarah Henslee, widow of Ruffin Henslee. (this was to give her means to get by until the estate was settled). (Caswell Co, NC Will Book Q page 110, shared by Cindy Stamps).

The youngest child of Ruffin and Sarah was born ca 1846 in Virginia, which may mean the family moved over into a neighboring Virginia county between ca 1843 and 1846, or that they were just visiting there when the child was born.

Sallie was listed on the 1850 census in Caswell County just 12 houses from possible in-laws William Henslee and Mary Milberry Pleasant. No other Henslees were close by.

I did not find them on the 1860 census in Caswell County, nor elsewhere so far. Cindy's research shows that Sallie had died prior to 10 Apr 1859, for on that date, an estate sale of her property was made, referring to her as "deceased".  (Caswell Co, NC Will Book S page 128 shared by Cindy Stamps).

Children

Ruffin and Sallie Henslee had two known children per the 1850 census. Both Julia and David were in neighboring Alamance County for the 1860 census both living with different families. David was with a Murray family, and Julia with a King family, both listed as Laborers in the households they were in, so I don't know if these are relatives or not. If so, they are probably maternal relatives, for I don't know of any Hensley connections to the King and Murray families. I have no data on them beyond the 1860 census.
