I (Marty Grant) am not related to William Hensley as far as I know.

William Hensley was born ca 1790/1800 (per 1830 census) or ca 1800/10 (per 1840 census). These can be reconciled if he was born ca 1800. I don't know where he was born, though Hawkins County, Tennessee is a possibility, since he was living there in 1830 and 1840.

I know very little about William. He is found on the 1830 and 1840 census in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and, frankly those are the only records I have on him so far. This could easily be the same person as William Hensley (c1797) of Sullivan and Washington Co, TN. See his page for more on that William. Certain analysis (documented on the other page) leads me to believe that this William in Hawkins in 1830 and 1840 is a different William, but I could easily be wrong. One other possible identity for this William is William Hensley (c1800) of Scott and Lee County, VA. Hawkins Co, TN borders Scott Co, VA, so this could certainly be the same guy. In fact this William of Virginia does fit fairly well, except none of his known children were born in Tennessee, and his whereabouts are known in 1830 and 1840.

See the page for William Hensley and Elizabeth Robeck (m 1826 Washington Co., VA) for another possible match to this William.

This family has a rough fit with that of widow Leticia Hilton Hensley of neighboring Scott Co, VA. Some of her children were born in Hawkins Co, TN, and several of them married there also, though residing in Scott in 1850 and later.

This William, who was in Hawkins in 1830 and 1840 is very likely a son of Robert Hensley (1760), or at least that seems a reasonable assumption since he was nearby him in 1830.

William would have probably been home with his parents for the 1810 and 1820 census, but assuming he was in Tennessee then, those records are lost.

In 1830, he had an apparent wife, also born ca 1790/1800 (or ca 1800/10 in 1840), and several children, including the oldest, born ca 1820/25, thus indicating he was married prior to ca 1825. I have no clue yet who his wife was, nor where they married.  As previously mentioned, he was very near Robert Hensley (1760), on the next page, but only a few households away. John Keys and James Winton were William's next door neighbors on the census.

1830 Hawkins Co, TN pg 48 William Hensley 1000010000000-1200010000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 30-39 (1790-1800)	William HENSLEY
1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Son? (1825/30) > gone by 1840, unless 1830/35
1 Female(s) 30-39 (1790-1800)	Wife?
2 Female(s) 5-9 (1820-1825)	Daughter? (1820/25)
					Daughter? (1820/25)
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Daughter? (1825/30)

William was still in Hawkins for the 1840 census, and once again, very near Robert Hensley (1760), his possible father. William's neighbors were Edward Breedlove and James Ladd.

I did not find William Hensley on the 1850 census in Hawkins County, Tennessee, nor elsewhere.

Like I said earlier, it is entirely possible that this is the same person as William Hensley (c1797) who married Barbary Wolf. If so, he was enumerated in both Washington Co, TN and Hawkins Co, TN in 1830 and 1840. That is a possibility, since many of the Hensleys lived in the multi-county border area in the corners of Hawkins, Washington, Sullivan and Greene. It is also possible this is the same as William Hensley (c1800) who married Elizabeth MaGee, and lived in neighboring Scott Co, VA and Lee Co, VA. Also consider Leticia (Hilton) Hensley, widow, to be a good suspect for part of this family. Her husband died between 1840 and 1850, and she had both Hawkins Co, TN and Scott Co, VA connections.

Children

I have no data on any of William's apparent children. They were all home in 1830 and 1840, and none were found in Hawkins in 1850.
