Welcome to my Holmes genealogy pages. I am interested in the Holmes surname in Lancaster Co., PA only. That area of interest may expand once I’ve learned more about my Holmes ancestors. As of now I know very little.

Holmes was the 161^st most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 171^st.

My most recent Holmes ancestor is my seven times great grandmother, Isabella Holmes, probably born ca 1720s. She married William Bryson in the 1740s in Lancaster Co., PA. They left PA for NC in the 1760s and lived there until the 1770s when they moved into Pendleton Dist., SC where both probably died in the 1790s. Isabella is a proven child of:

James Holmes, born unknown, probably ca 1700 or earlier. His wife was Sarah —. He left a Will in Lancaster Co., PA in 1749 naming his wife Sarah and daughter Isabella Bryson and her husband William. No other heirs were named, suggesting she was his only child.

James Holmes’s parents are currently unknown.

As of now (January 29, 2023), I’ve barely researched the Holmes family, so I have very little information on them.
