A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to the Thomas L. James family. I am very interested in him though.

Thomas L. James was born ca 1817/18 in Darlington Dist, SC, probably in the area near Effingham (modern Florence County). He is a proven son of George James and Jane Gourley. This is proven by two different Marion Equity records, one dated 2 Apr 1836 and one dated 15 Oct 1861 (Roll # 111 and Roll # 398, Marion County, South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucile Utley)

George James also left a Will (in Darlington) naming his children. I don't have that yet, but I plan to get it. The equity rolls mentioned above refer to this Will and refer to his son "Thomas L. James".

Thomas L. James married Elizabeth Timmons before 1837 in Darlington Dist, SC. Her maiden name and her parents (Simeon and Penelope Timmons) are proven by Marion Equity Rolls also. (Roll # 398, Marion County, South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucile Utley)

Thomas James was listed on the 1840 census in Darlington Dist, SC. I don't have the enumerations yet, but will get them when I can.

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence):

By 1850 Thomas L. James and family were in Marion Dist, SC, apparently in the Effingham area (McMillan Township). This entire region later became Florence County in 1888.

Thomas and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. He wasn't listed near any other James families, but his neighbors included many people known to live near Effingham in McMillan Township.

For the Civil War, Thomas L. James enlisted in Company D, 7th Battalion, South Carolina Reserves as a Sergeant. (Per Sellers page 642).

Thomas' wife Elizabeth may have died during the 1860's, as in 1870 (and 1880) his wife is listed as "Catherine". This could be the same woman, if her name was "Elizabeth Catherine" or "Catherine Elizabeth". The age is perfectly consistent for it to be the same woman. Further evidence is needed.

Thomas and family were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC in McMillan Township.

In 1888, McMillan Township and other parts of Marion and neighboring counties were cut off to form the new County of Florence. This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on.

Thomas L. James and Elizabeth Timmons children are mostly proven by the 1850 through 1870 census records.

Frances James was born circa 1836/37 in Darlington Dist, SC, presumably in the area just west of Effingham (now Florence County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She was not with them in 1860, so had married or died in the interim.

Joseph G. James was born circa 1838/39 in Darlington Dist, SC, presumably in the area just west of Effingham (now Florence County). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census. He wasn't at home for the 1860 census, but might have been in neighboring Darlington Dist, SC. I'm checking on that.

For the Civil War, Joseph James enlisted in Company F, Gregg's First Regiment as a Private in January 1861. He was promoted to Corporal October 1864. He surrendered on April 9, 1865. (Per Sellers page 588).

He married Susan E --- before 1867, either in Marion or Darlington Dist, SC. They were listed in Marion Dist, SC on the 1870 census, in McMillan Township next door to his parents.

In 1888, McMillan Township and other parts of Marion and neighboring counties were cut off to form the new County of Florence. This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on.

Simeon T. James was born circa 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township (now Florence County). He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

His full name was probably "Simeon Timmons James", named for his mother's father: Simeon Timmons.

For the Civil War, Simeon T. James enlisted in Company F, Gregg's First Regiment as a Private on August 1, 1861. He died August 1862. (Per Sellers page 588).

Jane B. James was born circa 1847/48 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township (now Florence County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. She was not with them in 1870, so had married or died in the interim.

Harriet E. James was born circa 1857/58 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township (now Florence County). She was home with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. She was not with them in 1880, so had married or died in the interim. There was an Elizabeth Lawhon with them in 1880 who was the right age, but relationship wasn't listed, so I don't know if it is the same person. It could be.

Ellis B. James (female) was born circa 1860 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township (now Florence County). She was home with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. She was not with them in 1880, so had married or died in the interim.
