Alexander Mackey was born probably ca 1700 in Ireland. He was in Albemarle County, Virginia by the 1740's. I dont know the name of his wife, but he was the father of at least three children: Alexander Jr, Joel and Mary and probably others. In March 1748/49 Court in Albemarle County, Alexander Mackie was named. An attachment was granted against the estate of William Matthews to satisfy a debt of 16 pounds due to Alexander Mackie. In April 1754 Court, Alexander Mackey was mentioned in another court order to attach the estate of William Cannon. On 23 Feb 1767, Alexander Mackey Sr and Alexander Mackey Jr (his son) and Gray Haggard witnessed a deed from Nathaniel Harlow of Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle Co, VA, to Samuel Boyd of St Anns Parish, Albemarle County. (Albemarle Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 440) On 15 Apr 1774, Alexander Mackey Sr of Fredericsville Parish deeded 297 acres to my son Joel Mackey. There were no witnesses to the deed. (Albemarle Co, VA Deed Book 6 page 337) The above deed (1774) is the last record I found for Alexander Mackey Sr. He must have died in that time-frame. |

Children of Alexander Mackey. Alexander and wife were the proven parents of Joel Mackey, as named in
the 1774 deed. It is strongly suggested that Alexander Mackey (Jr) was also their
son, for they were certainly associated. Mary Mackey Musick was also a part of
this family per Beatrice Doughtie in her book
The Mackeys
and Allied Families, 1957. I dont
know what the proof is for putting Mary here. She did seem to be
associated with them in Rutherford Co, NC. It is entirely possible
(but not proven) that my Martha Mackey Grant is also a child of
Alexander Mackey Sr for she was associated with members of this
family.

Alexander Mackey was born ca 1726, presumably in Ireland. I dont know the basis for that birth date, but he was probably born prior to ca 1737 if he was at least 21 when he appeared on his first public record (in 1758). At some point (presumably in or before the 1750's), Alexander Mackey married Susanna Lewis in Albemarle Co, VA. She was born ca 1726 in Hanover Co, VA, daughter of David Lewis and Anne Terrell. Joel Mackey was born before 1755 (per 1800 census), presumably in Albemarle Co, VA or in Ireland. He is a proven son of Alexander Mackey Sr as named in a 1774 deed. I don't have a great deal of info yet, but when I do some more research, I'll set up a separate page just for this family. Joel Mackey married Sarah Joyce on 24 Mar 1772 in Guilford Co, NC (per Mackey book). Sarah was born before 1755 (per 1800 census). I dont know where she was born, nor who her parents were. On 15 Apr 1774, Alexander Mackey Sr of Fredericsville Parish deeded 297 acres to my son Joel Mackey. There were no witnesses to the deed. (Albemarle Co, VA Deed Book 6 page 337) Joel Mackey was listed on the North Carolina State Census of 1786 in Surry County, North Carolina. They did not appear on the 1830 census. Their sons John and Joel (Jr) were still in Buncombe in 1830. Children of Joel Mackey and Sarah Joyce Joel and Sarah had a number of children per the various census records. As far as I know, none of them are proven, but it seems highly likely that Joel Jr and John are their sons. I also show two daughters (Mary Jane and Margaret), as shared with me by other researchers. I dont know what proof there is to connect them to Joel and family. Mary Jane Mackey (1773) and John Keith. Doris Mayer Reece gave me information on this family. Mary Jane and family remained in Pendleton Dist, SC (now Pickens Co, SC) after her parents moved to NC. She remained there until her death in 1846. John Mackey (c1774). John was apparently married and had many children per the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census records (all in Buncombe County). He was living with a Fortune family (perhaps his daughter and son-in-law) in 1840 and 1850, still in Buncombe. Margaret Mackey (c1777) and George Keith. Remained in South Carolina. Unknown Son (1772/86). Joel had an apparent son this age with him in 1786 (aged "under 21", or born ca 1765/86). I narrowed down his birth range based on the 1772 marriage date of his parents. He was no longer home by 1800, so perhaps married or dead by then. Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Joel had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1786 (no ages), and in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90). She was still home in 1810 (age 26-44, born ca 1765/84). She was gone by 1820, so probably married or dead by then. Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Joel had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1786 (no ages), and in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90). She was still home in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94). She was gone by 1820, so probably married or dead by then. Mary Mackey was probably born in either Ireland or Albemarle County, Virginia. I dont know when she was born, but I would guess sometime between ca 1726 and ca 1760. That is a wide range, but I have no data (so far) to narrow it down any further. I have not yet seen any proof that Mary was a Mackey, nor that she was a child of Alexander Mackey Sr. This may be absolutely correct, but Id like to know what the evidence is. Mary Mackey married Lewis Musick sometime prior to 1782, probably well before that date. They may have married in Virginia, but they went to Rutherford County, North Carolina sometime before 1782. Lewis Musick was born ca 1750, son of Abraham Musick and Sarah Lewis. Ive not yet seen any proof to support that birth date nor his parents names. The only official record I have on this family is dated October 1782 when the Estate of Lewis Musick of Rutherford County, North Carolina was mentioned, and Alexander Mackey and Mary Musick were appointed Administrators. James Miller and Thomas Rowland were security for the administrators. This was recorded in the Secretary of State Papers in the Probates section. I have no further data on Mary. She was not listed on the 1790 census in Rutherford County, North Carolina. There were several Musick households in Rutherford that year, perhaps she was living with one of them. I have no record of any children for Lewis Musick and Mary Mackey. |

Martha Mackey was born ca 1755/60 (per census analysis) in Ireland (per 1850 census), or possibly in Albemarle Co, VA. I have no data proving she is a child of Alexander Mackey Sr, but she does tie into this family somehow as proven by various things.
