This family is described in some detail in North Carolina Moravian records and is also covered quite well in "The Miller Families of Ashe County, NC" by Danny L. Miller.

Christian Muller (later "Miller") was probably born ca 1728 or thereabouts. If we assume he was at least 21 in 1749 when his first child was born, then he must have been born ca 1728 or earlier.

His birth place is unknown but he lived in Bucks County Pennsylvania later on so perhaps he was born there as well. In his earliest records he signed his name in the German form so perhaps he himself was born in one of the old Germanic states and immigrated to Pennsylvania while still young.

I don’t know who Christian Miller’s parents may have been. I have not yet attempted to do any research in Bucks County Pennsylvania and that is probably where that answer can be found. The only clue we have about his possible family is that his Will (1785) was witnessed by a John Miller. This John could be a brother or perhaps a nephew. In any event he was not his son, so must be some other relation.

Christian Miller married Veronica — before 1749 presumably in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She was probably born around the same time frame as Christian: circa 1720-1730 or thereabouts. I don’t know her maiden name. She was probably of Germanic origin also. The only record I've seen so far with her name on it was in the obituary of her daughter Catherine.

The family left Pennsylvania and arrived in the Yadkin River valley of North Carolina in 1752 (as proven by Moravian records). He settled on South Deep Creek in what is now Yadkin County North Carolina. In 1752 this area was wild frontier and was attached to Anson County until 1753 when Rowan County was created. The place they settled was called the "Miller settlement" presumably in honor of Christian Miller. Early deeds show that Christian Miller’s land was near that of Morgan Bryan who’s place was called the Bryan Settlement. Morgan Bryan was the grandfather of Rebecca Bryan wife of Daniel Boone, famed frontiersman who himself lived just a few miles south of the Miller settlement. It is reasonable to assume that their paths may have crossed, though who knows for sure.

I have not done much research on the Millers in Rowan County yet but will do that as time permits. Danny Miller included a couple of abstracted records in his book on the family. He mentioned a deed dated 12 Oct 1763 from John Bryan to Christian Miller for 460 acres on Millers Creek, a fork of South Fork of Deep Creek. (From Rowan Co, NC Deed Book 5 page 354, from "The Miller Families of Ashe County, NC", by Danny L. Miller).

The Moravian records refer to Christian Miller as a man "formerly rough and godless" but who was then (1771) a leader and who held church services when no one else could do it.

He also mentioned a deed dated 27 Jan 1770 from Christian Miller to George Long (his son-in-law) for 113 acres. This deed was signed in German (i.e. "Muller"). I’ll have to get these original records myself to provide more details.

In 1771 Surry County was formed from Rowan County and included the Millers home place within the new county.

Strangely, Christian Miller is not listed on the early Surry County Tax Lists (1771, 1772, 1774, 1775 and 1777). Perhaps he was exempt due to his age.

On 20 Sep 1779 Christian Miller was mentioned in a state land grant to John Blalock. The grant was described as 640 acres adjoining "Christian Miller’s deeded land" which I assume means the bordering land was no longer Millers but had been his before that date. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book A page 294 from "Surry County, North Carolina Abstracts Deeds Books A, B and C 1770_1788" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.).

On 10 May 1783 Christian Miller (signed "Muller") sold John Blalock 40 acres on Cotobo Creek for 29 pounds of Gold and Silver [not the normal form of payment in those days!]. The land was described as having been bought by Miller from John Bryan who received it as a Granville grant on 10 Aug 1762. Witnesses were David Hudspeth and Ayres Hudspeth and Cade Blalock. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book B page 294 from "Surry County, North Carolina Abstracts Deeds Books A, B and C 1770-1788" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.).

Christian Miller was mentioned in Surry County Court on 19 Feb 1785 when Thomas Clanton was appointed overseer of the road from Edward Moores old place to Christian Millers. ("Surry County, North Carolina Court Minutes Volume I & II, 1767_1789", page 63, by Mrs. W. O. Absher).

On 14 Apr 1785 Christian Miller made his Will in Surry County. He named his son Jacob Miller (whom he also named Executor), daughter Mary Davis, heirs of daughter Catherine Long deceased, daughter Elizabeth Carpenter. His wife Veronica was not named so she must have died before this date. Christian signed his name with a mark which looked like an "N" but could be an "M" or a fancy "X", I'm not sure. Witnesses were Joseph Hill, Thomas Clanton and John Miller (a relative?). I have a copy of the original Will here, but the county copy was filed in Book 3 page 18 and was proven in August 1795, so Christian apparently lived 10 years beyond the writing of the will. I have made a transcription from the original will. I have not changed any spelling but I have added a little punctuation and have spaced it into paragraphs (the original was all one huge paragraph).

The Moravian archives may have an obituary for Veronica, if one was made. The Moravian church was pretty good about giving a full biography at the funerals of their members. I have not looked for such a document, but if one exists for her it may be quite revealing.

Christian Miller was listed on the 1786 North Carolina census in Surry County. He was listed with one male between 21 and 60 and one male either under 21 or over 60 (probably the latter), and 1 female. We know from his Will from the year before that Christian's wife had died and all his children were married by then so I don't know who these other folks living with him were. Since the age categories for males were kind of odd on this census, I can't be sure if Christian Miller is the one listed as age 21-60 (born ca 1726/65) or the one either under 21 or over 60 (born before 1726). Since his birth date is estimated in the 1720's he could fit either of these categories. Christian was listed next door to his son Jacob Miller and just 2 houses from son-in-law George Long. Son-in-law Mathias Carpenter was about 21 houses away. William Davies was 10 houses away and he might be a son-in-law also.

On 27 May 1787 Christian Miller sold ½ acre to George Long (his son-in-law) for 5 shillings specie. The land was described as being enclosed within Millers other land as a burying place. Witnesses were William Davis (son-in-law?), Edward Clanton and Joseph Hill. Christian signed this deed as "Miller." (Surry Co, NC Deed Book D page 38 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779_1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

The above deed (27 May 1787) was proven in Surry County Court on 17 Aug 1787 by William Davis one of the witnesses. ("Surry County, North Carolina Court Minutes Volume I & II, 1767_1789", page 121, by Mrs. W. O. Absher).

Christian Miller was listed on the 1790 census in Surry County. This census was divided up into several groups roughly alphabetical, presumably within each community. Christian Miller was listed in a group that had no other Millers nor any of his sons-in-law listed nearby. That doesn't mean anything though as the alphabetical aspect makes it difficult to analyze. His household contained one male over 16 (him) and 1 female (no ages). This could be a second wife, a daughter, granddaughter, or it could be a servant or anyone.

On 20 Mar 1793, Christian Miller Jr entered 80 acres of land on Millers creek bordering Christian Miller Sr and George Long. Christian Jr is probably a nephew of Christian Sr or possibly even a grandson.

Christian Miller was mentioned in a deed dated 25 Dec 1793 between George Alston of Granville County, NC to William Haynes of Franklin Co, NC for 640 acres adjoining Christian Miller, agreed line between John Blalock and William Masters. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 45 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

Christian Miller died sometime before August 1795 for that is when his Will was proven in Surry County Court. I can only assume he was buried at the family cemetery that he deeded to George Long in 1787.

The Moravian archives may have an obituary for him, if one was made. I have not looked for one but will attempt it someday.

Children of Christian Miller and Veronica ---. Christian Miller and Veronica had four children as proven by his Will. Some of these are also proven by other sources, mainly Moravian records. I have listed them in the order they were named in the Will which may be their proper birth order.

  1. Jacob Miller (bef 1755)
  2. Mary Miller
  3. Catherine Miller (1749)
  4. Elizabeth Miller (1750/55)

Jacob Miller was born before 1755 per his age on the 1800 census (45 and up). He was probably born in Bucks Co., PA. He is a proven child of Christian Miller as named in his 1785 Will.

Jacob Miller is listed on a 1772 tax list in Surry County, taxed for one poll (himself). I don't know if it is this same Jacob or not, but could be.

Two Jacob Millers are listed on the 1774 tax list in Surry, and two there in 1775.

In 1777 there is one Jacob Miller listed on the Surry tax list. He has 833 acres.

He was listed on the 1786 state census in Surry Co., NC (listed twice in fact, with the same enumerations). He had one free white male over 21 (born before 1765), which would be himself, three males under 21 (born between 1765 and 1786) which are probably his sons, and four females (wife and three daughters?).

I have Jacob's wife's name as Barbara Hoppes, daughter of George Hoppes and Catherine Kern. I have no primary sources for her or her parents, so I'm not sure where it comes from originally. She was born ca 1755/65 per census analysis.

Jacob Miller is listed on the 1790 census in Surry Co., NC.

There is a Jacob Miller listed on the 1830 census in Surry, but he is a much younger man born between 1800 and 1810. There was no sign of the older Jacob. He was probably dead by then.

Jacob apparently had many children according to the 1790 through 1820 census records, but I don't know who any of them are.

Mary Miller was born ca 1750/60 (an estimate based on her siblings ages) either in Bucks County, Pennsylvania (if before 1752) or in Rowan (now Yadkin) County, NC if after 1752. She is a proven child of Christian Miller as named in his Will.

All we know about Mary is that she was married to a Mr. Davis before 1785 for she was named in her father's Will of that year as "Mary Davis." It is possible that her husband was named William Davis for he witnessed a deed of Christian Miller's in 1787. This same William Davis (I think) was listed just a few houses from Christian Miller on the 1786 state census.

You should note that William Davis is not proven to be Mary's husband, although her husband was proven to be named Davis. William is the best suspect for several reasons just noted, but nothing has yet been found proving he was actually her Mr. Davis.

Furthermore, several researchers have concluded that this is indeed her husband (which could be true) and that he is the same William Davis who married Christian Miller's granddaughter Frances Carpenter (1771) as his second wife. Frances' husband William Davis (1740-1841) did not marry her until ca 1790-95 so the timing works. William Davis left his first wife for being unfaithful but I have found no record proving that these two men named "William Davis" are the same person. William Davis (who married Frances Carpenter) never lived in Surry County as far as I know.

There is room for debate on this, but I think the available records are too scanty to draw any conclusions.

We know Mary was married to her Mr. Davis before 1785 (date of her father's Will). The 1786 State census of Surry County shows several Davis families: Charles Davis, Daniel, Einithen, George, James, John, John, John, Leonard, Lutisha, Matthew, Mathou, Morgan, Samuel, Samuel, Serreh, William, William, and William Davis. Presumably one of these is Mary's husband. Since several of these were females we can eliminate them from consideration leaving many choices still. If we narrow it down to just Captain Wright's District (which is where Christian Miller lived at the time) that reduces the suspects to William Davis, for he was the only one in that district in 1786, and as stated before just a few houses from Christian Miller. This makes him the prime suspect. The 1786 census shows two other men named "William Davis" in Surry County so that may make sorting them out difficult in other records.

The first William Davis record I find in Surry is dated 1773 when a man of this name purchased land south of Dan River. This is probably too early to be the same man and the location is too far north.

On 3 Apr 1780 a William Davis received a State Land Grant for 150 acres on Town Fork Creek adjoining Shore (no first name listed for Mr. Shore). (Surry Co, NC Deed Book B page 137from "Surry County, North Carolina Abstracts Deeds Books A, B and C 1770-1788" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.).

On 3 Nov 1784 a William Davis was mentioned as an adjoining land owner in a deed on Neatman Creek. This is in present day Stokes County so that is clearly a different William Davis. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book C page 112from "Surry County, North Carolina Abstracts Deeds Books A, B and C 1770-1788" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.).

On 31 Aug 1786, William Davis and wife Mary sold 120 acres to their son James Davis on the South Side of Dan River. Witnesses were John Davis, John Dunlap and Patrick Kiney. William and wife Mary both signed with marks. Although the names are a match this is probably not the same couple for this William and Mary had a grown son in 1786 and although that is possible it doesn't seem likely to be the same couple. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book D page 67 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

I mentioned earlier that William Davis witnessed a deed from Christian Miller to George Long dated 27 May 1787. Edward Clanton and Joseph Hill also witnessed. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book D page 38 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

On 3 Mar 1788, William Davis, Edward Clanton and John Carlton witnessed a deed from Philamon Holcomb to Elijah Carlton for land on Deep Creek. This is certainly the same William Davis we are interested in. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book D page 387 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

On 18 May 1789 a William Davis received a state land grant of 550 acres near road crossing Shaws Creek, Simms Creek and Little Snow Creek. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book D page 76 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

On 20 Feb 1790 William Davis, John Marshall and Joseph Davis (brother or son of William's?) witnessed a deed from Lindsey Carlton to John Davis Jr of Chatham Co, NC (a clue to William's origin perhaps?). The land was on North Fork of Deep Creek. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book E page 123 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

On 18 Nov 1790, William Davis and Thomas Clanton witnessed a deed from Thomas Cook of Wilkes County to John Wiles for land on South Fork of Deep Creek. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book E page 122 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

The 1790 census for Surry County shows only three William Davis. One was clearly in the Fishers Creek region and is probably the same one mentioned in a 1793 deed (see below). The other two were both listed in the same grouping with Mathias Carpenter. I don't know which of these is the William Davis who is Mary's husband. One had 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16 and 3 females. The other had 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, and 3 females. The list was alphabetical within each community so I can't tell which of these lived nearer to the Carpenters.

On 17 Jun 1791, Elijah and Nathan Pope formerly of Rowan County, heirs at law of Pilgrim Pope their father, sold 640 acres to William Davis of Rowan County, NC, land on South Fork Deep Creek. This may be the same William Davis, but I'm not sure. South Deep Creek makes it worth noting. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 174 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

On 2 Nov 1792, William Davis of Rowan County sold 200 acres to Lindsey Carlton on South Fork Deep Creek part of land granted to Pilgrim Pope, sold to said Davis by Elijah Pope and Nathan Pope, heirs of Pilgrim Pope. Witnessed by Michael Swaim and John Haines. I don't know if this is the same William Davis but it certainly could be for William witnessed a deed of Lindsey Carlton's in 1790. If this is the same William then he moved to Rowan County between 1790 and 1791. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 20 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

On 2 Nov 1793 Samuel Davis deeded 100 acres on Fishers River to William Davis. This is probably a different William. Witnesses were Ephraim Witcher, Stephen Potter and Larkin Strawn. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 110 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

On 3 Mar 1794, William Davis now of Surry County, late from Berkley County, Virginia made a deed of lease from Joshua Creson for 8 years for land on Yadkin River above mouth of Deep Creek adjoining Henry Speer. Witnesses were Henry Speer and Perry Chinn. This may not be the same William Davis but since Deep Creek was mentioned I though it was worth taking note of. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 68 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

On 13 Mar 1794 William Davis of Rowan County sold 440 acres to May Holcomb on mouth of South Fork of Deep Creek, north part of land acquired from Pilgrim Pope heirs adjoining widow Whitehead and Lindsey Karlton. Witnesses were Solomon Davis and Henry Davis. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 173 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

The 1800 census shows two men named William Davis in Surry County and one in Rowan. I don't know which of these is *our* William Davis and wife Mary Miller. The William in Rowan was age 16-25 (born ca 1774/84) which is too young. He was next door to Solomon Davis who is the same one who witnessed the 1794 deed of William in Surry. This seems to remove him from consideration. The first of the Surry Williams was born before 1755 with a wife born ca 1755/74. The list was alphabetical so I don't know what section of the county he was in nor who his neighbors were. His wife seems too young to be Mary Miller though. The second one had both husband and wife born before 1755 so that may be them.

More research will be needed to determine if indeed William Davis is Mary Miller's husband, and where they wound up and what children they had, etc.

Catherine Miller was born 13 Jul 1749 (per obituary) in Bucks County, Pennsylvania (per obituary). She is a proven child of Christian and Veronica Miller as named in his Will and in her own obituary.

She came with her parents to North Carolina in 1752. She married George Long in April 1765 (per Obituary) in Rowan (now Yadkin) Co, NC.

Catherine Miller Long died on 8 Feb 1784 after giving birth to twins. She and George had 10 children, 2 of whom died before she did (according to the Obituary).

Her obituary is recorded in the Moravian records and gives an interesting biography of her life.

On 3 Nov 1784 George Long received a state land grant of 200 acres on the South Side of South Fork Deep Creek adjoining Clayton and Long. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book C page 227 from "Surry County, North Carolina Abstracts Deeds Books A, B and C 1770-1788" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.).

George Long was listed on the 1786 State Census in Surry County just 2 houses from Christian Miller. Another George Long was listed just a few more houses later. I assume the one closest to Christian Miller is this George. I don't know who the other one was.

On 27 May 1787 Christian Miller sold ½ acre to George Long for 5 shillings specie.

("Surry County, North Carolina Court Minutes Volume I & II, 1767-1789", page 121, by Mrs. W. O. Absher).

On 9 Jul 1794 George Long received a state land grant for 300 acres on Smith's Branch adjoining Edward Chandler, Hoppis, Thomas Everton, Penry on Mosbys Ridge and Alston. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book E page 269 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

On 29 Apr 1795, George Long sold 100 acres on Fishers Creek to George Deboard for 2 pounds Specie. The land adjoined John Pendry and Mosely. Witnesses were Thomas Wright and Joseph Warbinton. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 181 from "Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797" by Mrs. W. O. Absher.)

George Long married again after the death of Catherine. I have not done much follow up research on this family. I have a list of their 10 children but I do not know what the source is for their names. George Long died ca 1805 in Surry County, NC (now Yadkin County).

Elizabeth Miller was born ca 1750/55 (per census analysis) either in Bucks County, Pennsylvania (if before 1752) or in Rowan (now Yadkin) County, NC if after 1752. She is a proven child of Christian Miller as named in his Will and also in other Moravian records.

Elizabeth married Mathias Carpenter before ca 1770 in Rowan (later Surry, now Yadkin) Co, NC. They lived in Surry County until ca 1792 when they moved to what is now Ashe County, NC where both died in 1835. See their own page for more information.
