[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grandson of William H. Moore and Margaret Patton.
Note: There was another Revolutionary War Soldier with the name William Moore who was also married to a Margaret Patton. This has caused a little confusion. That William Moore was born 11 Feb 1765 in Lancaster Co, PA and died 16 Jun 1835 in Davidson Co, NC. He married his Margaret Patton on 13 Sep 1784 in Rowan Co, NC. Margaret was born ca 1771 and died after 1851 in Davidson Co, NC. The Revolutionary War Pension File (W5389) contains some data on them. When Margaret applied for the Pension she sent for a marriage record from Rowan County, and the clerk sent a copy of the marriage bond for the other William and Margaret dated 1774. He crossed out 1774 and wrote in 1784, evidently thinking it was a typo, not realizing there were two couples with these names, married 10 years apart. So the confusion started a long time ago! This other William and Margaret are considerably younger than mine.
Special thanks to Betty Hayes for data shared on this family. Much is owed to a letter dated 7 Sep 1903 (which Betty shared with me) from Charles A. Moore (a great Grandson of William H. Moore) to Mrs. N. Walton Jackson, in which he outlines the family history.
There is probably a great deal of source documentation available for this family in Rowan, Burke and Buncombe County records, but I have not yet done much digging into it. I will do that as time permits. In the meantime, I'll present what I do have available.
William H. Moore was born ca 1726 (per age of 86 given on his tombstone) in "the north of Ireland" (per 1903 letter). Some researchers say Ulster, Ireland, but I don’t know what source they have used for that.
I do not know who William’s parents were, but I’ve seen other researchers list his father as "William Moore", but I have no clue what sources were used, nor if this is correct. We do know that William H. Moore and his brother Charles Moore (per 1903 letter) came from Northern Ireland to America.
According to the 1903 letter William and Charles probably settled first in Pennsylvania then moved south. Charles settled on the Tiger River in Upper South Carolina, now Spartanburg County, while William settled for awhile in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on Muddy Creek (now Burke County). He moved from there to Hominy Creek (now in Buncombe County) and remained in that area. The letter does not give the dates of his various moves, but we can speculate about that. We know from his marriage record (1774) that he was also in Rowan County at least long enough to marry a local resident there (Marriage bonds were filed in the county where the bride resided).
William served as a county Militia officer and was involved in several expeditions against hostile Indians in western North Carolina (according to 1903 letter). There is some debate about whether these military records pertain to this William Moore or to some other man of the same name (there were several men named "William Moore" around in those days).
William H. Moore married 1st to Ann Cathey, sometime prior to ca 1765, presumably in old Rowan County. The 1903 letter only says "his first wife was a Cathey." Other researchers have shared that his wife was named "Ann Cathey". I am a Cathey researcher also, and Ann is a cousin of mine. It is thought that she is the same Ann Cathey who was baptized on 3 Apr 1743 at Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church in Augusta County, Virginia, daughter of George Cathey, Esquire, and Margaret — Cathey. Although some proof may exist, I have not seen any direct evidence that this Ann Cathey was the same Cathey who was wife of William H. Moore, but numerous other researchers have listed it this way. I’d like to see some hard evidence though. The name "Ann" may be a confusion with another William H. Moore who did marry an Ann Cathey. This William was William Hamilton Moore (17??-1852) and his wife Ann Cathey (1783-1867). I have no primary data on them except that they moved to Cooper Co, Missouri.
William and Ann had at least 5 children as noted by other researchers, but once again I’ll have to note that I’ve seen no direct evidence proving any of these children as belonging to William H. Moore. The list may be absolutely correct, but I don’t know what proof there is. The 1903 letter is the earliest source I have for them being part of this family.
William’s wife Ann died sometime prior to mid 1774. On 4 Aug 1774 William Moore obtained a marriage bond in Rowan County, North Carolina to marry Margaret Patton. Daniel Little was bondsman. He may be somehow related to one family or the other. Margaret’s mother Charity Patton gave permission on 28 Jul 1774 for her daughter to marry (thus showing she was under 21). Her tombstone (died 1814) gives her age at death as 65, which puts her birth at ca 1749, which may be correct, but it so, she would have been about 25 when she married, and would not have required her mother’s permission. Perhaps the permission was just a formality and not actually required. The census records only prove she was born before 1755 (per 1800 census). In any event, this proves that Margaret Patton was a child of Charity (—) Patton. Other researchers show that Charity was widow of Robert Patton. I have not looked into this yet.
William H. Moore served during the American Revolution (according to the 1903 letter). Betty Hayes shared several documents with me showing William Moore in the War. One documented dated 7 Nov 1776 is a letter from William Moore to General Rutherford with details of an expedition against the Indians. In it he states he enlisted men on Oct 19, 1776 (apparently he himself enlisted or was commissioned before that date) and marched to various Indian towns and detailed events of those couple of weeks.
William Moore was listed on the 1790 census in Burke County, North Carolina. There were 2 William's listed there that year, one in the 6th Company, one in the 10th. I believe he was the one in the 6th Company. He was the only Moore in that company.

In 1791, Buncombe County was created from a portion of Rutherford County and Burke County, including the section where the Moores resided on Hominy Creek.
William Moore was listed on the 1800 census in Buncombe County, North Carolina as was another man named William Moore. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living, though it seems likely they were on Hominy Creek.

William Moore was listed on the 1810 census in Buncombe County, North Carolina. There were four Williams there that year. One listed as "Jr", the others simply as "William Moor". Only one of them was old enough to be this William. He was not listed near any other Moore families.

William H. Moore died on 6 Nov 1812 (per tombstone) in Buncombe County. Margaret Patton Moore died on 27 Apr 1814 (per tombstone) in Buncombe County. They are buried at the Captain Moore Cemetery in Candler, NC. His stone lists "William Moore" died Nov 6 1812 age 86, hers Margaret wife of William, died Apr 27 1814 age 65. No birth dates were given. The stones are very old, but it is possible they weren't placed until many years later. It is rare for stones from that era to survive the ravages of time.
William H. Moore and Ann Cathey had four children, and William and Margaret Patton Moore had seven children. All of the children were named in the 1903 letter, and are proven in that manner. Some other researchers include a couple of additional children, but I've seen no evidence to support their claims, so I'll leave those out. Here is the list as given in the letter: "He had several daughters; Rachael, who married George Penland, Polly, who married Robt. Penland, Alice, who married John Penland, Charity, who married Jesse Ballew, Peggy, who married James Rutherford, Sally, who married John Montgomery, Nancy, who married Jonathan McPeters and Elizabeth, who married Ben Tutt. He also had three sons; Thomas, William and Charles." I've segregated the children according to their ages, assigning all those born before 1774 to the first wife, and the rest to the second wife. In a few cases, I have no birth dates to use, so they could belong to either wife. Other than the 1903 letter, I've seen no documentation proving any of these children. Something primary would be nice to expel any doubt.
Nancy Moore was born ca 1755/65 (based on 1800 and 1810 census entries), presumably in old Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a daughter of old William H. Moore: "Nancy, who married Jonathan McPeters".
Nancy Moore married Jonathan McPeters probably before ca 1784 either in old Mecklenburg or old Burke County. Jonathan was born ca 1755/65 per census analysis, or 14 Jan 1756 (source?) as shared with me by someone. The same source gave his parents as Charles McPeters and Mary McDowell.
They were listed on the 1790 census in Burke County, in the 1st Company. They were next to Joseph McPeters (brother?).

Buncombe County was formed in 1791 from Burke including the section where they resided.
They were listed on the 1800 census in Buncombe County. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical so I can't determine who their neighbors were.

In 1808, Haywood County was formed from western Buncombe, and either the McPeters lived in that section already, or moved there before 1810 for they were listed in Haywood for the 1810 census. This census was alphabetical, so I can't determine neighbors. They had a few females with them old enough to be daughters, but who were not with them (apparently) in the prior census.

I could not find them in 1820. They may have still been in Haywood for I have several other "missing" relatives who should have been listed in Haywood in 1820 but were not. This may be the result of a lost page of the census, or the census taker not visiting a particular area.
By 1830 Jonathan was "back" in Buncombe, and Nancy was apparently dead by then, for no one her age was with Jonathan. There was an older female (much younger than Nancy should have been) who could be a new wife or perhaps an older daughter still at home. Another researcher told me that Jonathan married Rachel Reed ca 1814 in Haywood County. I checked this and did find a marriage bond dated 12 Aug 1814 between Jonathan McPeters and "Rachal Reed" daughter of Samuel. John McFarland was the bondsman.

I did not locate them on the 1840 census.
Margaret Moore was born ca 1755/65 (based on 1800 and 1810 census entries), presumably in old Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a daughter of old William H. Moore: "Peggy, who married James Rutherford". It should be noted that "Peggy" is a common nickname for "Margaret."
Margaret Moore married James Rutherford probably before ca 1784 either in old Mecklenburg or old Burke County. James was born ca 1755/65 per census analysis. I don't know where he was born, nor who his parents were.
They were listed on the 1790 census in Burke County, in the 6th Company. They were just a few houses from Peggy's parents. Their next door neighbors were Robert Sellers and Margaret Dizard.

James Rutherford died in the 1810-1820 timeframe, for Margaret was listed as head of household on the 1820 census in Buncombe County. She was just a few houses from brothers Charles Moore and Thomas Moore.

I did not find her in 1830. There was a James Rutherford (c1800) who was in Buncombe in 1830, 1840 and 1850. He could be a son of James Rutherford and Margaret Moore.
Sarah Moore was born ca 1765/74 (based on 1800 and 1810 census entries), presumably in old Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a daughter of old William H. Moore: "Sally, who married John Montgomery". It should be noted that "Sally" is a common nickname for "Sarah."
Sarah married John Montgomery but I'm not sure when, though pre 1790 seems likely.
The census entries for John Montgomery in the Buncombe County area show two adult males in his house, and I'm not sure which of them is John. Here is what I have discovered from a limited search:
The 1790 census shows a John Montgomery in Burke County in the 6th Company just a few houses from William Moore. He was next door to James Montgomery (father? Brother?). John's entry seems to show two adult males, so perhaps the other is a brother or perhaps an older son or even his father.

They were listed in Buncombe for the 1810 census. They were next to John Whitaker and William Bridges. A William Montgomery (1765/84) (brother?) was a few houses away. Every one of the children who were home in 1800 were gone by 1810. This makes me think this may be a different John Montgomery in 1810, but it could still be the same family.

I did not find them in 1820.
Thomas Moore was born ca 1765/74 (based on 1800, 1810 and 1820 census entries), presumably in old Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a son of old William H. Moore. The letter also said that Thomas went to Georgia and raised a family there.
I believe Thomas was still home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed in the "Under 16" age group (born ca 1774-1790).
Thomas Moore married someone in the 1790-1800 timeframe.

I did not find them in 1830. This may indicate they had moved to Georgia in the 1820-30 time period. With no additional data, I don't know how to determine where they were in Georgia. The 1830 census index shows 10 men named "Thomas Moore" in Georgia. One of these may be the same Thomas: Butts, Cass, Clarke, Coweta, Elbert, Hall, Harris, Houston, Laurens and Twiggs County.
A scan of all the Thomas Moore's in 1850 Georgia shows 14 Thomas Moore households. One of them, in Jefferson County, was age 63 (born ca 1787), and born in North Carolina, occupation "Hatter". This probably isn't him. None of the others were old enough. This may indicate he was dead before 1850.
Alice Moore was born ca 1769/70 per her ages on the 1850 census (80) and 1860 census (90). She was presumably born in Burke (now Buncombe) County, North Carolina. She was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a daughter of old William H. Moore: "Alice, who married John Penland".
Her husband John Penland was a brother to the other Penlands who married into this family, as stated in the 1903 letter. John was born ca 1764/65 in Pennsylvania (both per 1850 census). I don't know who his parents are.
I didn't find John Penland on the 1790 census, but it does seem he and Alice were probably already married prior to then. In 1790 there was Robert, George and William Penland listed in Burke Co., NC. George had a large household including 3 males over 16. William had 5 males over 16. One of them could be John, though I don't know which of them (if either) is John's father.
I wasn't able to find John on the 1800 census either. George Penland (bef 1755) was in Buncombe, the only one of that surname listed there. He had an older male aged 26-44 (1755/74) with him. That could be John. In Burke in 1800 there was James Penland (1755/74), Robert (bef 1755) and William Penland (bef 1755). William also had a male aged 26-44 at home with him, which could be John, and two females in that age group, one of whom could be Alice Moore Penland.
I did find John Penland on the 1810 census in Buncombe County.

John is listed on the 1830 census in Buncombe. **
They were in Buncombe for the 1840 census, and just a couple of houses from James Rutherford, who I think is Alice's nephew.

They were still in Buncombe for the 1850 census. John was age 85 and Alice age 80. No one else was living with them. **
John Penland made his Will on 3 May 1852 in Buncombe naming his heirs: his wife (not by name); sons Charles D. Penland and George Newton Penland; son William Penland; son Abraham; son John H. Penland; James Cathey's three children (relationship not stated); His sons John H. Penland and G. N. Penland were named executors. Witnesses were Charles Moore (his brother-in-law) and G. W. Candler (his nephew). The Will can be found online at the Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society website.
Alice Moore Penland was still alive as of the 1860 census, aged 90. She was in Buncombe as head of household. A grandson and his wife were living with her. **
Charity Moore was born ca 1774/84 (based on 1800 and 1810 census entries), presumably in Burke (now Buncombe) County, North Carolina. She was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a daughter of old William H. Moore: "Charity, who married Jesse Ballew".
Charity was probably home with her parents for the 1790 census, however it is impossible to say for sure. The 1790 census did not list females by age category. William Moore had 5 females, 1 of which was his wife, the other 4 daughters, probably including Charity.
Charity Moore married Jesse Ballew (or "Bellew") in the 1790-1800 time-frame. Jesse was born ca 1765/74 (per census analysis). I don't know who his parents were. The 1790 census shows a Joseph, Robert, Stephen and William Bellew in Burke County. Robert was listed near the Moores, and had a large enough family to possibly include Jesse as a son.
They were listed on the 1800 census in Buncombe County. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical so I can't determine who their neighbors were.

I was unable to locate them in 1820. Someone told me this family moved to Missouri. I did not find them there in 1820, 1830, 1840 or 1850.
William Moore was born ca 1774/84 (based on 1810 census entry and assuming he was "under 16" back in 1790, or born 1774-1790), presumably in Burke (now Buncombe) County, North Carolina. He was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a son of old William H. Moore. It was stated that he moved to Missouri and raised a family there.
I don't have much data on William for there were several Williams in early Buncombe, and I don't know to be sure which was this one.
I believe that William was home with his parents in 1790, age "under 16" (born ca 1774/90).
He appears to still be at home in 1800, age 16-25 (born ca 1774/84).
William married someone in the 1800-1810 time-frame. The 1810 census shows several Williams, but one listed as William "Jr" was just a few houses from Thomas Moore, so it seems reasonable that this is the same William. He was also just a few houses from James Rutherford, his brother-in-law.

There was only one William Moore in Buncombe in 1820, but I don't believe it was this William, but I could be wrong. This probably shows that he moved to Missouri before 1820. I have no data on where in Missouri he moved to. There were over 40 Williams in Missouri in 1850, and I have not attempted to find out which of them (if any) is this same William.
Rachel Moore was born ca 1781/82 (per 1850 census), in Burke County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). She was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a daughter of old William H. Moore: "Rachael, who married George Penland".
Rachel was probably home with her parents for the 1790 census, however it is impossible to say for sure. The 1790 census did not list females by age category. William Moore had 5 females, 1 of which was his wife, the other 4 daughters, probably including Rachel.
Rachel seems to have still been at home with her parents for the 1800 census, age 16-25 (born ca 1774/84).
Rachel Moore married George Penland in the 1800-1810 time-frame, perhaps before 1805. George was born ca 1777/78 (per 1850 census) in Burke County, North Carolina. He was a sibling to the other Penlands who married into this Moore family. I don't know the source, but someone told me his parents were Robert Penland and Elizabeth Brank.
They were listed in Buncombe for the 1810 census, but not near any of their Moore relatives.

By 1820 they had moved into neighboring Haywood County, probably all the way into what later became Macon County. They were listed there on the 1820 census. Some of the enumerations seem to be off somewhat. This was an alphabetical listing, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, so I'm not sure where they were in Haywood County.

In 1828, Macon County was formed from western Haywood, and the Penlands either moved there before 1830, or already lived in that section of the county. They were listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. He was listed just a few houses from John P. Moore (c1765), who is not related to Rachel Moore's family as far as I know.

They were still in Macon for the 1860 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Both George and Rachel died sometime after 1860, presumably in Macon County.
Mary "Polly" Moore was born ca 1785/86 (per 1850 census) or ca 1781/82 per 1860 census. She was presumably born in Burke (now Buncombe) County, North Carolina. She was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a daughter of old William H. Moore: "Polly, who married Robt. Penland". "Polly" is a common nickname for "Mary".
Polly was probably home with her parents for the 1790 census, however it is impossible to say for sure. The 1790 census did not list females by age category. William Moore had 5 females, 1 of which was his wife, the other 4 daughters, probably including Polly.
Polly seems to have still been at home with her parents for the 1800 census, age 10-15 (born ca 1784/90).
Mary "Polly" Moore married Robert Penland in the 1800-1810 time-frame, presumably in Buncombe County. Robert was born ca 1780/81 (per 1850 census) or 15 Aug 1779 (source?), in North Carolina. He is a brother to John and George Penland who married Polly's sisters.
They were listed on the 1810 census in neighboring Haywood County. Haywood was formed in 1808 from western Buncombe, and the Penlands may have already lived in that section, or else just moved there prior to 1810. The census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who their neighbors were. Their household was quite large, and Robert wasn't the oldest male there. It is possible that this is his fathers household instead (also named Robert), but if so, then perhaps the younger Robert was residing with him. They were the only Penlands in Haywood that year, though neighboring Buncombe County still had several.

I have no data on her after this.
Elizabeth Moore was born ca 1788/89 (per 1860 census), in Burke County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). She was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a daughter of old William H. Moore: "Elizabeth, who married Ben Tutt".
Elizabeth seems to have been home with her parents for the 1790 census (no ages given), and with them in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90).
Elizabeth married Benjamin Tutt ca 1810 in Buncombe Co, NC. See their own page for additional information.
For some reason, several researchers list her as "Margaret Elizabeth Tutt", which is incorrect. The 1903 letter has a handwritten "Margaret" above the name of Elizabeth, but it was obviously written in later by someone else, and I can only speculate as to why someone wrote it there.
Charles Moore was born 6 May 1791, in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He was probably named after his Uncle Charles Moore.
Charles seems to be home with his parents in 1800 age "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800) and still home in 1810, age 16-25 (born ca 1784/94).
Charles Moore married Margaret Penland between 1810 and ca 1812. She was a sister to Robert and George Penland who married Charles's sisters. She was born ca 1775/94 (per 1820 census) or ca 1789 (per some source?).
They were listed on the 1820 census in Buncombe County. Charles seemed to have several "extra" people with him for this census. He was listed two houses from his sister Margaret Moore Rutherford, and a few more from brother Thomas Moore.

Charles was listed on the 1830 census in Buncombe. He was next to Edward Stewart Sr and just a few houses from my ancestor Jeffrey Grimes (1784), both of whom lived in the Avery Creek area, so that puts Charles somewhere near there.
