The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Rollin Patterson as far as can be determined. Rollin Patterson was born ca 1780/90 per his age on the 1830 census (40-49) or ca 1790/1800 per his age in 1840 (40-49). The two can be easily reconciled if he was born in 1790. In 1810 he was 16-25 or born ca 1784/94. That fits a 1790 birth year also. I'm not sure of his proper name. He is listed as Roly, Roley, Rolly and Roalen on the various census records. I've settled on "Rollin" since that fits. I don't know who his parents are, but as he was in Pendleton Dist., SC in 1810 he may be related to some of the other Pattersons who where there at that time. Census analysis might help narrow down the possibilities, but it isn't an exact science. In 1790 Rollin would be under a year old or perhaps not even born yet. There were three Patterson households in Pendleton Dist., SC that year who had young sons (males under age 16): John Patterson (who is not his father), and two other men also named John Patterson. The 1800 census proves a little more difficult as Rollin could fit in two different age groups depending on his exact birth date. He would either be 9 or 10, so he could be in the under 10 group (ca 1790/1800) or the 10-15 group (ca 1784/90). That means that all six of the Patterson households in Pendleton that year are suspects for the each have at least one son that matches. We can eliminate one of the John Patterson households for his family is proven and Rollin isn't part of it. That leaves two other Johns as well as a James, Thomas and Alexander. Rollin Patterson married someone between 1800 and 1810, presumably in Pendleton Dist., SC. I don't know what her name was. She was born ca 1790/94 per her age on the various census records. They are listed on the 1810 census in Pendleton District, on the same page with one of the John Pattersons, but not very close to him (22 houses away). 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Pendleton Dist., SC pg 145 Roly Patterson 10100-00100-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male 16-25 (1784/1794) Rollin Patterson (1784/90) 1 male 0-9 (1800/1810) Son? Unfortunately the 1820 census is lost for Rabun. They were in Rabun for the 1830 census, but not near any of the other Pattersons who were also there at the time. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Rabun Co., GA pg 227 Roley Patterson 0020001000000-3200010000000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 40-49 (1780/1790) Rollin Patterson (1784/90) 2 males 10-14 (1815/1820) 1-Son? (1825/30) 3-Daughter? (1825/30) 0 Slaves They had moved a little south and west by 1834 to Lumpkin County where they were listed on a tax list that year as "Rolly Patterson" with 10 whites. By the 1840 census they had moved into neighboring Cherokee Co., GA. They were listed a few households from Hicks Patterson, probably their son. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Cherokee Co., GA page 13 Roalen Patterson 0000001000000-0220001000000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 40-49 (1790/1800) Rollin Patterson (1784/90) 1 Female 40-49 (1790/1800) Wife? (1830/35) 0 Slaves I wasn't able to find Rollin on the 1850 or 1860 census in Cherokee or elsewhere. I didn't find an apparent widow in that county either who could have been his wife. They may have both died in the 1840's. Their probable son Hicks was still in Cherokee for the 1850 census. |
Children of Rollin Patterson. The 1810, 1830 and 1840 census shows several apparent children. None are proven yet, but I suspect Hicks Patterson was one of them.
