[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin, 10 times removed of John E. Roberts, assuming that various weak connections can be proven.
Special thanks to Dr. Merrit E. Roberts of Lompoc, CA for information shared on this family in his book "Roberts-Allen Families", 1985. He has data in his book on John Roberts, that I won't repeat here, except what I can find myself in the various records. Although I think his book was excellent, and a worthwhile addition to my library, I did find much in it that was based on various assumptions, some of which I totally disagree with, so I'm probably going to contradict much of what he wrote on the early Roberts families. I do this with no disrespect towards Dr. Roberts, but only for the sake of presenting evidence that he may not have had access to, or in presenting my own alternate interpretations of certain data. When possible (and practical) I'll present our cases side by side if they differ significantly, so the reader can decide which is more likely, or possibly come up with a third point of view.
John E. Roberts was born before ca 1717, presumably in Craven Precinct, NC. I base this birth date on his first found record which was in 1738 when he was given a land patent in Craven Co, NC.
Dr. Merrit E. Roberts lists John as a son of John Roberts, son of Andrew Roberts Sr. I'm not sure what he based that on, and I haven't been able to find anything to support it, so far.
On 22 Nov 1738 John Roberts received a land patent for 150 acres on the South side of the Neuse River in Craven Co, NC on Charles Gavan's corner. (Craven Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 175)
On 17 Jan 1742 John Roberts and wife Elizabeth sold the 150 acre patent to John Williams. Witnesses were: Aaron Word, Ann Word, and Andrew Carrachau. John Roberts signed with "E" as his mark. (Craven Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 175)
The 1742 record above is the last sure record I have for John E. Roberts.
Charles Gavin, who's land bordered John E. Roberts in 1738, sold land in Duplin Co, NC in 1753 and that deed was witnessed by Joseph Roberts who has a proven brother named Moses Roberts. Joseph was born ca 1732 or before, and Moses ca 1749 or so. They could both be children of John E. Roberts. This is speculation though.
I have found no record (so far) of any children for John E. Roberts and his wife Elizabeth.
