I am not related to Edward Stuart as far as I can prove. However, he lived in Buncombe Co., NC at the same time as my own ancestor John Stewart (1730/40-1830). I don’t think they were associated in any way though.
Edward Stuart was born ca 1781/82 per his age on the 1850 census (68). He was born in North Carolina per the same source. I don’t know for certain, but I believe he was born in Surry Co., NC.
I don’t know who his parents were, though it seems very likely he’s part of the same family as Nathaniel Stewart (d 1824). I can’t say how Edward ties in though, but I’m certain he does.
Edward would have been about 8 years old for the 1790 census. That means he should be in the under 16 age group. Some of the Surry Co., NC Stewarts had already migrated to South Carolina by 1790, so I can’t be sure where Edward was exactly.

p. 68 Benjamin Stewart 2-1-4-0-2

p. 84 William Stewart 1-5-2-0-0
From the above we can see numerous potential places for Edward.
There were no Stewarts in Buncombe Co., NC yet by 1800, so we can assume Edward was still elsewhere. He would have been about 18 for this census, so he should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group. None of the Stewarts left in Surry Co., NC had anyone his age. There were several options in South Carolina though.

Edward Stuart would have been about 28 for the 1810 census, certainly old enough to be a head of household. However, he was probably still single at the time and perhaps home with his parents or someone else. There aren’t many options for him in Buncombe or South Carolina in 1810, at least not in Stewart / Stuart households.

Only having two potential matches in 1810 doesn’t guarantee that Edward (c1782) is actually in one of those households. He could easily be living with other relatives or non relatives. If that is him with Nathaniel (c1771) in 1810, then that would strongly indicate they were brothers. However, there is no way to prove it’s him or not.
I believe it was during the 1810s that Edward Stuart married Sarah Israel in Buncombe Co., NC. Sarah was born ca 1787/88 per her ages on the 1850 and 1880 censuses, (62 and 92 respectively). Her other two entries are off a little, but not much: 1860 age 69 (born ca 1790/91) and 1870 age 81 (born ca 1788/89).
Sarah is a proven daughter of Johnston Israel (c1762-1853) and wife Ann (c1771-1857). This is proven by their 1850 census entry which included their children Jane (c1800) and William (c1804) who later resided with Sarah and were listed as her siblings.
Edward and Sarah lived in the Avery Creek area west of Asheville after marriage.
They are listed on the 1820 census in Buncombe. They are four houses from Nathaniel Jr (c1772), five from Jacob (c1777), seven from Charles (c1770/75), all closely related to each other.

My analysis (who each person *might* be):
1m 26-44 (1775/1794) Edward Stuart (c1782)
1f 26-44 (1775/1794) Sarah Israel Stuart (c1788) wife
I was unable to locate Edward Stuart on the 1830 census in Buncombe or elsewhere. The older Edward (1755/60) is listed as “Senr” which indicates that Edward (c1782) was likely still in the county or there would have been no need for the suffix (unless there was yet another Edward in Buncombe at the time who was of age.)
Edward and Sarah were not with her parents nor with any of the other Stuart families in 1830. They were either missed by the census taker or were living with some other family at census time.
They were “back” for the 1840 census. They, and my ancestor John Stewart (c1808), were the only Stewarts left in Buncombe by this time. Edward and John were not in the same part of the county.

My analysis (who each person *might* be):
1m 50-59 (1780/1790) Edward Stuart (c1782)
1f 50-59 (1780/1790) Sarah Israel Stuart (c1788) wife
They are on the 1850 census in Buncombe. There was another Edward Stewart (c1797) in the county by this time. They aren’t related as far as I can determine, nor did they live near each other. The only other Stewart was my uncle Dillard Stewart (c1811) who wasn’t nearby either.
Edward and Sarah were next door to my ancestors Jeffrey Graham and wife Fanny Eastridge Graham, who were not related to the Stewarts as far as I’m aware.

Who was one year old Jesse R. Crook? He couldn’t be a grandchild since Edward and Sarah had no children of their own. A nephew perhaps? This same child, I think, is with the family of Joseph C. Crook (c1815) and Mary Jane (c1815) in 1860 Kansas. They were in Buncombe in 1850, with a large family, not including Jesse.
Edward Stuart died sometime between 1850 and 1860 in Buncombe Co., NC.
Widow Sarah is on the 1860 census with her brother William Israel and sister Jane. The two women are actually listed as sisters to William, though relationships normally weren’t given on the 1860 census.

Sarah is still with her siblings for the 1870 census, though this time her surname wasn’t listed properly.

William Israel died before 1880, but sisters Sarah and Jane were still alive and living on their own for that census. For some reason, Jane’s surname was crossed out, or perhaps it was written in over a “ditto” line.

Sarah Israel Stuart died sometime after 1880. I don’t know where she is buried. Findagrave.com has a listing for the Michael and Sarah Israel Burying Ground which includes a modern memorial for Johnson and Ann and all their children including Sarah. I don’t know if they are actually buried there or not.
It appears that Edward Stuart and Sarah Israel Stuart had no children.
