I am not related to Edward Stewart as far as I can tell. However, he lived in Buncombe Co., NC while my uncle Dillard Stewart lived there. I don’t think they are connected though.

As with most early families of this surname, it was spelled both ways on the various records, Stewart and Stuart. His tombstone has Stewart, as does his wife’s.

Edward Stewart was born ca 1796/97 per his ages on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census which were pretty consistent at 53, 63 and 73, respectively.

His birth place is either South Carolina (1850 census) or North Carolina (1860 and 1870 census). Since that’s two to one, I think North Carolina is correct. I don’t know where he was born in North Carolina though. See my analysis of the 1800 census data later for a little more on that subject.

Many years ago I found a file at the North Carolina Archives on this Stewart family. It was prepared by D. C. Stewart of Etowah, TN in 1992 and contained his work, as well as work by professional genealogists William D. Bennett and Brent Holcomb, both of whom are well respected. Over the course of their research they determined that this Edward (c1797) was the son of Edward Stewart and Mary Ford of Spartanburg and Greenville Dist., SC. Since then, I've had data shared with me by James A. Stewart and Teresa Stuart de Rios which confirms this connection.

The main source is a letter written in 1901 by Nellie Smith which outlines the family for several generations. She shows that Edward (1797) was a son of Edward and Mary Ford Stewart. No proof is offered, but presumably it was family knowledge. I don’t know how Nellie Smith connects to Edward, but since Edward’s wife Lucretia died in 1900, it’s clear Mrs. Smith probably had first hand information about the family and should be considered a reliable source.

There were several Edward Stewarts in the early records so it isn’t always clear which one is which.

Edward (1797) would have been around three years old for the 1800 census.

There were three Edward Stewarts in NC and SC for that census, all had at least one apparent son under age 10 (born ca 1790/1800) which works for Edward (c1797).

1800 Census, Spartanburg Dist., SC

p. 524 Edward Stewart       30010-01010-0-0 * six houses from Manley Ford

The Edward in Spartanburg is a good choice considering he was near Manley Ford, perhaps a close relative of his wife Mary Ford Stuart.

One problem with this being the right family is that they were also in Spartanburg back in 1790. If Edward (Jr) was born ca 1797 in North Carolina, does that mean this isn’t his family? Did they move to NC briefly between 1790 and 1797, then back to SC by 1800? Spartanburg did border Rutherford Co., NC at the time. They wouldn’t have had to travel too far to be in North Carolina.

Edward (c1797) would have been 13 for the 1810 census, so should be the 10-14 age category. I wasn’t able to locate Edward (Sr) in Spartanburg that year. There was an Ed Stuart in neighboring Greenville Dist., SC and an “E. Sturt” (sic). Ed had no matching son, but E. did.

p. 541 Ed. Stuart  00101-01201-0-0

Edward Stewart apparently served during the Seminole War in 1818 in Capt. Mann’s Company, Georgia Militia per a widow’s pension application filed by his widow Lucretia Stewart many years later. I have not yet seen the actual pension application. It may contain useful family information. (War of 1812 Pension Applications, Widow’s Original 39025.)

Edward (c1797) would have been 23 for the 1820 census, old enough to be on his own, but still unmarried so probably still at home. Edward (Sr) was listed in Greenville that year and he did an apparent son in the age 16-25 age group, which is where Edward (c1797) should be.

p. 5 Edward Stuart Senr     010101-00101-0-0

Edward (c1797) would have been 33 for the 1830 census. He does seem to be with his parents on that census, still in Greenville, in the 30-39 age group.

Edward (c1797) is listed as a head of household on the 1840 census, though living alone. His parents are listed in another household.

Edward (c1797) moved to Buncombe Co., NC in the 1840s. I believe that’s where he married Lucretia Anders before ca 1847. She was born Aug 1826 per the 1900 census. This agrees with her entries on the 1850 census (24) and 1880 census (54), though other censuses were slightly different, 36 in 1860 (ca 1823/24) and 45 in 1870 (ca 1824/25). All of those are rather close.

She was born in North Carolina per the 1850 and 1880 census, but the others (1860, 1870 and 1900) show her born in South Carolina.

The D. C. Stewart papers show her maiden name as Anders, but I don't know the evidence for it. The 1840 census shows three “Andrews” families in Buncombe, which might be the same surname as Anders. Only one of them, Jack Andrews, had an apparent daughter Lucretia’s age in 1840. This makes him prime suspect for her father. He seemed to live in that part of Buncombe County that later became Madison County (in 1851).

Edward and Lucretia were listed on the 1850 census in Buncombe. They are next door to John Andrews, 62 and wife Sarah, 45. This is probably the same person as Jack from 1840 (Jack is a common nickname for John). They are definitely old enough to be Lucretia’s parents. Edward had $200 worth of real property, so he had apparently acquired some land in Buncombe County before 1850. They were most definitely in the part of Buncombe that was soon cut off to form Madison County or very close to the new border. I base this on nearby families I know wound up in Madison.

Edward Stewart died 1873 according to a tombstone placed long after his death. The marker is at Ball Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in neighboring Pickens Co., GA. I don’t know if he died in Pickens, or that’s just where his descendants decided to put the marker. It’s a veteran marker which lists him as Edward Stewart Jr, and lists his Indian War service. I would assume this was placed in the mid 20th century.

Lucretia is listed on the 1880 census in Gilmer.

Lucretia Anders Stewart died in 1900 according to her tombstone at Rock Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Gilmer Co., GA. It’s a newer stone, so probably placed by descendants long after her death.

Children

Edward and Lucretia had eleven children as proven by the 1850 through 1900 census records.
