I am not related to John Stewart as far as I can tell. However, he lived in Guilford Co., NC for a time as did my own ancestor also named John Stewart (1730/40-1830). I don’t know if their time there overlapped or not.

There were records for several different John Stewarts in Guilford. Follow the link for more on the other Johns and my attempts to sort them out.

John Stewart was born in the year 1750 somewhere in Pennsylvania. Both facts are per his Revolutionary War Pension Application (R10158). When asked his birth date and place he only gave the year and state without additional details. He stated “My age was recorded in the family prayer book of my father but at the death of my father the book fell to possession of some other of the children and I expect that the Book is now in the State about.” Statement made 23 Jan 1835 in Butts Co., GA.

He stated that he served in the war from Guilford County beginning 1777 under Capt. Stewart, later stated to be his brother George Stewart.

He further stated he resided in Guilford County until the year 1790 then came to Butts Co., GA where he’d lived ever since.

He didn’t mention any other family members except his brother George. I checked and George was not a pensioner.

There were two George Stewarts on the 1790 census in Guilford. I can’t say with any certainty which was John’s brother.

George Stewart received a 600 acre land grant on Alamance Creek on 16 Dec 1778. He sold the same, or part of it, to Levi Tucker on 29 Jan 1785. His wife Mary Stewart also signed.

On 21 Sep 1785, George Stewart sold Samuel Tucker 100 acres. His wife didn’t sign this one.

On 7 Dec 1785 George and Mary Stewart sold land to Robert Hanna, on the Great Alamance, part of the 1778 grant.

On 9 Mar 1787 Thomas and George Stuart sold land to William Duck, being land they’d purchased of James McCastian, on Richland Creek.

On 20 Nov 1788 Thomas and George Stewart sold land to Daniel Dilling, 200 acres on Richland Creek, being part of same land mentioned before conveyed by James McCastian.

In Feb 1790, George Stewart received a land grant on Richland Creek, a branch of Reedy Fork bounded by Samuel Duck, Joseph McDowell and James White. The entry was for 50 acres, but the actual survey came out to 39 acres. John Stewart, Blacksmith, had land on Reedy Fork, so this record might be for his brother George.

On 16 Nov 1790, George Stewart received a land grant for 166 acres on waters of Rock Creek, joining Robert Peasley on the north. He applied for 200 acres, but it came out to 166. The survey showed it bordered Jacob Shearer Jr, Andrew Law and Robert Paisley.

George continued in the records until 1793. At that time his wife was named Martha. This could be the other George Stewart. In none of those deeds or land grants did I see John Stewart mentioned on the same records with George. I don’t know who Thomas Stewart was. George’s son? Or brother? Which George, though?

As for John Stewart himself, there were records for several different John Stewarts in Guilford. Follow the link for more on the other Johns.

On 22 Aug 1787, James Brown sold land to John Stewart blacksmith. The land was described as 282 acres on a branch of Reedy Fork of Haw River and on both sides of the county line between Rowan and Orange, now Guilford. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 4, pp. 437-438). This John had a wife named Mary per a 1791 deed when he sold this same land.

John is probably one of these on the 1790 census:

Guilford Co., NC

p. 494 John Stuart               1-1-5-0-0               I think this is John Stewart of Benaja Creek.

p. 495 John Stuart               1-0-1-0-2               I think this is John Stewart, blacksmith.

p. 501 Jehu Stuart               3-2-4-0-0               indexed as John, but says Jehu. Quaker family.

If any of the above is John Stewart later of Butts Co., GA, it would have to be Blacksmith John.

On 8 Nov 1791, John Stewart Blacksmith of Guilford made a deed to William Malhattan (McAlhatan), being the Reedy Fork land from the 1787 deed. The deed was signed by John Stewart and Mary Stewart. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 5, p. 279).

I think that John Stewart, Blacksmith and wife Mary, must be the one from the Revolutionary War pension who moved to Butts Co., GA. Although he said they moved in 1790 in the pension, he was still in Guilford in 1791 per the last deed listed above.

I think that John left out some information in his pension application, because in 1790/91 there was no Butts County, Georgia. In fact, the area that later became Butts was still Creek Indian territory. That didn’t change until 1821 when Henry and Monroe counties were formed in that area. Butts was formed from those two counties in 1825. So where was John Stewart during those years?

The 1800 and 1810 censuses are lost for Georgia.

There are several John Stewarts in Georgia on the 1820 census including two in Jasper County which bordered where Butts County was soon to be. I would assume that one of those is the one formerly of Guilford, but not necessarily.

1820 Census Jasper Co., GA

220 John H. Stewart            200010-00100-0-0

252 John P. Stewart            500001-11010-0-0

Of the above John P. Stewart is the only one old enough, but can’t say with any certainty it’s him.

John Stewart is not listed on the 1830 census in Butts Co., GA. The only Stewart there is Walter Stewart who has no one John’s age in his household. John was probably residing with a married daughter. There were John Stewarts listed in most of the bordering counties, but none were old enough to be this man.

John was still living in 1835 when he applied for his pension. He is not listed on the 1835 pensioners census though.

I didn’t find him on the 1840 census.

Children

I have no data on any children for John. If he’s the same John that was listed as a Blacksmith, then his wife was named Mary. I don’t know for certain if that is the same John though.
