[Stewart Home] - [Table of Contents] - John Stewart (1776-1844)

I am not related to John Stewart as far as I can tell. However, he lived in Guilford Co., NC for a time as did my own ancestor also named John Stewart (1730/40-1830). There is no possibility this John and my John are one and the same person as this John is much younger.

There were records for several different John Stewarts in Guilford. Follow the link for more on the other Johns and my attempts to sort them out.

John Stewart was born 25 Mar 1776 in Guilford Co., NC. His birth date is proven by Quaker records, which also prove out his entire family rather well.

John is a proven son of Jehu Stewart (Sr) (1740-1827) and Sarah Stanley as named in Quaker records and in Jehu’s Will.

John would have been 14 for the 1790 census. His father Jehu had two boys under 16 at home with him in 1790, one of whom is likely John.

John would have been 24 for the 1800 census, old enough to be listed as a head of household, but he was apparently still at home with his parents, aged 16-25.

John Stewart married a Miss Beason (Beeson) prior to 1803 in Guilford. She is a daughter of Benjamin Beeson.

On 8 Oct 1803, Jonathan Hunt of Guilford made a deed to John Stewart, Planter, of Guilford, for $40, waters of Deep River, John Sanders line, 8 acres. Signed by Jonathan Hunt. Witnessed by Nathan Mendenhall and Jehu Stewart Jr. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 9, pp. 138-139.)

On 26 Mar 1804, William Dillon “late of Guilford”, for $1072.50, deeded land to John Stewart of Guilford. On Bever Creek, Daniel Dillon’s old line, 286 acres. Signed William Dillon. Witnessed by Joel Sanders, Robt Stewart, John Sanders. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 8, p. 303.)

On 8 Jun 1804, Jehue Stewart, Wheelright, of Guilford made a deed to John Stewart, planter, of Guilford, for 100 pounds, on waters of Deep River being part of the tract Jehu Stewart lives on. Mentions Robert Stewart’s corner, 120 acres. Signed by Jehu Stewart. Witnessed by Nathan Mendenhall, Jehu Stewart Junr. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 8, pp. 215-216.)

Quaker records show that John was dismissed from the church in 1804, no reason stated, perhaps because he left the area which seems to be the case.

John’s first wife, Miss Beason, must have died before 1805 when he remarried.

On 9 Dec 1805, John Stuart obtained a marriage bond in Rowan Co., NC to marry Elizabeth Chipman. Jesse Matton was bondsman. Elizabeth Sanders Chipman was a widow, and also about 9 years older than John.

The church found out about the marriage around 5 May 1806, for on that date she was dismissed from the church for marrying “outside of unity,” i.e. to a non church member. Quaker records show that Elizabeth was born 27 Jun 1767, a child of Hezekiah and Martha Sanders. She married Paris Chipman before 3 Jan 1791 for on that date she was dismissed from the church for marrying outside of unity. A year later she was welcomed back after “condemning her conduct.” Chipman died 13 Mar 1803. They had at least four children together (Joel, Mary, Martha and Elizabeth Chipman).

There are two John Stewarts on the 1810 census in Guilford, or four if you count the two Jehu Stewarts mistakenly indexed as Johns. The first one listed (p. 924) is probably John Stewart, son of Finley. The second one (p. 990) is probably John (1776) son of Jehu.

p. 990 John Stewart            00210-33001-0-0                Next to Joseph Cook. Son of Jehu.

On 17 May 1810, Jehue Stewart made a deed to John Stewart, for $400, land in waters in the forks of Deep River, Harrises line, Caleb Garrett’s corner, Thomas Morgan’s corner, 100 acres. Signed by Jehue Stewart. Witnessed by Nathan Mendenhall and Caleb Garrett. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 10, p. 113.)

There are three John Stewarts on the 1820 census in Guilford. The one on page 116 is John, son of Finley, judging by his age and that he had slaves. The one on page 123 is likely John (1776) son of Jehu.

p. 123 John Stewart            001210-02201-0-0                                              Son of Jehu.

On 26 Apr 1823 Jehu Stewart made his Will in Guilford naming, among others, his son John, abbreviated as Jno. Though this Will is clearly for Jehu, it’s indexed as John. Handwritten Jehu can often be misread as John, but in this case it’s very clearly written as John throughout the Will.

John is on the 1830 census a few houses from his brother Robert Stewart.

John Stuart made his Will on 20 Dec 1841 in Guilford Co., NC. It is quite detailed. In fact, it’s five pages long. He named:

           Wife Elizabeth Stuart.

To Jonathan Harris and George C. Mendenhall.

Daughter Sarah Wilburn wife of Daniel Wilburn.

Daughter Louisa Harris wife of Jonathan Harris.

           Grandson John Stuart Harris.

           Granddaughter Mary Harris.

Three grandsons, children of my son Temple Stuart, deceased: Erasmus, Paris and Temple Stuart.

My daughter Sarah Wilburn’s two children Elizabeth Coffin and Romulus Wilburn.

Jonathan Harris and George C. Mendenhall Executors.

Signed by John Stuart.

Witnessed by George C. Clark and James Ruffin Mendenhall.

The Will was proven in May 1844 court.

John Stewart died on 4 Jan 1844 and is buried at the Deep River Friends Meeting House Cemetery in High Point, Guilford Co., NC.

Elizabeth is listed on the 1850 census in Guilford. Zimri Stewart, Insane, is residing with her. He is a son of Henry Stewart, John’s 1st cousin. Elizabeth’s widowed daughter Elizabeth Chipman Stewart is next door. Her late husband was Temple Stewart, John’s son from his first marriage.

Elizabeth Sanders Chipman Stewart died on 26 Aug 1853 (per Quaker records), presumably in Guilford Co., NC. I didn’t see a marker for her at Deep River (per Findagrave.com).

I didn’t find a Will or Probate records for Elizabeth.

Children

John and Elizabeth only had two children recorded in the Quaker records, daughters Sarah Stewart (1806) and Louisa Stewart (1809). Elizabeth had four from her first marriage as noted earlier.

John had at least one child from his first marriage to a Miss Beeson, named Temple Stewart.
