John Stewart Records in early Guilford, Rockingham and Randolph County, North Carolina

[Stewart Home] - [Table of Contents] - John Stewart Records in Guilford, Randolph and Rockingham.

There were several men named John Stewart or Stuart in Guilford County early on. This page is my attempt to sort them out by determining which record belongs to which John. One wound up in Randolph (formed in 1779). At least one of those Guilford Stewarts wound up in Rockingham when it was created from Guilford in 1785, so I’ve done some research in that county too.

The known John Stewarts:

John Stewart (1730/40-1830) and wife Mary of NC (Guilford, Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Buncombe, Haywood, Macon).

John Stewart (Sr) (d 1793/96) and wife Jean of Benaja Creek. Had land in both Guilford and Rockingham (formed 1785).

John Stewart (Jr) (c1756-1830) and wife Mary Kerr/Carr. Married here in 1774. Had land on Hogans Creek (now Rockingham) 1784-1785, then to Pendleton Dist., SC (now Pickens Co., SC).

John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary. Had land on Reedy Fork and Alamance and Pole Cat.

John Stewart (1750-aft 1835) of NC (Guilford) and GA (Butts). To GA in 1790.

John Stewart (1765/75-1825), Esquire, and wife Nancy Agnes Gorrell. He is a son of Finley Stewart.

John Stewart (1776-1844) and wife Elizabeth Sanders. Quaker. Son of Jehu Stewart.

John Stewart (1755/65-aft 1818) and wife Alcey Brown of NC (Rockingham). I don’t think they lived there when it was part of Guilford, probably arriving in the 1790s.

Time-line of the county:

Bladen County formed in 1734, theoretically encompassing what would later become Guilford with a wide open north western border, though it’s doubtful anyone of interest to us lived in that section when it was still Bladen.

Granville County formed in 1746 with an open western border, which technically would have included some of what later became Guilford, though it’s doubtful anyone of interest to us lived in that section when it was still Granville

Johnston County formed in 1746 with an open north western border, which technically would have included some of what later became Guilford, though it’s doubtful anyone of interest to us lived in that section when it was still Johnston.

Orange County formed in 1752 from Bladen, Granville and Johnston Counties.

Rowan County formed in 1753 from Anson and Orange. From this point onward, most of what later became Guilford was part of Rowan, though a sliver remained in Orange.

Guilford County formed in 1770, effective 1771, from Rowan and Orange.

Randolph County formed in 1779 from the southern portion of Guilford.

Rockingham County formed in 1785 from the northern portion of Guilford. Guilford has remained unchanged since 1785.

John Stewart (c1730/40-1830) and wife Mary Ann. These are my ancestors. They both died in Macon Co., NC. Prior to that they lived in Haywood and Buncombe Counties. Before Buncombe, they lived in Cabarrus Co., NC. Before that, it’s very likely they lived in Guilford. This is based upon their son Jacob Stewart (c1775) 1860 census entry wherein his birth place is listed as Guilford. However, Jacob’s 1850 census entry lists Cabarrus as his birth place. In both instances, Jacob was residing with a married daughter and son-in-law, so it’s reasonable to assume that the son-in-law is who provided the census taker with the information. We do know that Jacob married in Cabarrus in 1804, and his father John was there as far back as 1800. This knowledge is probably why Jacob’s son-in-law reported Jacob’s birth place as Cabarrus for that census. However, it’s fairly clear the Stewarts weren’t in Cabarrus all that long, thus why the 1860 census entry shows Guilford for Jacob’s birth place. If we can rely on that then that puts my John and Mary in Guilford County in the mid 1770s, ca 1774/1775 for sure.

There were several John Stewarts in the early Guilford records and at least two with wives named Mary.

As best as I can tell, none of the records I’ve found so far in Guilford are likely to be my John and Mary Stewart. This suggests they never owned any land there, and perhaps didn’t live in Guilford very long (if at all).

John Stewart (Sr) (d 1793/96) and wife Jean — of Benaja Creek. John had sons John Jr (1755/74-aft 1818), James (1755/74-aft 1800) and Samuel (1760/65-1833).

John Stewart (Jr) (c1756-1830) and wife Mary Kerr/Carr, married 1774 in Guilford, owned land on Hogans Creek in 1784, sold it in 1785. They moved to Pendleton Dist., SC.

John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork of Haw River. He purchased land in 1787 on Reedy Fork of Haw River, which is in eastern Guilford near the Alamance line. John and Mary sold this land in 1791. He also obtained land on waters of Alamance and Pole Cat in 1787 which he held onto until selling off the last of it in 1803. That is last record for them in Guilford.

John Stewart (1750-aft 1835) of NC (Guilford) and GA (Butts). This John Stewart was a Revolutionary War Soldier while residing in Guilford, serving at one point under his brother Cpt. George Stewart. John stated in his pension application that he left Guilford in 1790 and moved to Butts Co., GA.

I haven’t yet identified this John’s wife. It is entirely possible this is the same John, Blacksmith, with wife Mary with land on Reedy Fork, or the same John and wife Mary who had land on Hogans Creek, or perhaps he’s neither of those.

John Stewart (1765/74-1825) and wife Nancy Agnes Gorrell. He is a proven son of Finley and Prudence Stewart. John married in 1803.

John Stewart (1776-1844) and wife Elizabeth Sanders. He is a proven son of Jehu and Sarah. Resided in the western part of Guilford near present High Point. They were Quakers.

John Stewart (1755/65-aft 1818) and wife Alcey Brown of NC (Rockingham). I don’t think they lived there when it was part of Guilford, probably arriving in the 1790s.

Guilford County Records

A map showing the waterways in Guilford where Stewarts had land.

On 16 Mar 1774, John Steuart obtained a marriage bond in Guilford to marry Mary Carr. William Fleming was bondsman.

Notes: This is John Stewart (Jr) (c1756-1830) and Mary Kerr of Hogans Creek. I base that upon William Fleming having a land grant on Hogans Creek.

On 22 Oct 1782 John Stewart received a state land grant for 640 acres on both sides of Benajah Creek, bordering John Donnell (See Surry County records.) (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 2, p. 316.) The land was entered 22 Aug 1778. The survey was dated 1 May 1782. Charles Norman and Reuben Land were chain carriers. (North Carolina Land Grants.)

Notes: John Stewart (Sr) (d 1793/96) and wife Jean of Benaja Creek.

Notes: Benaja Creek (Benaja is the modern spelling, Benajah the old spelling) is in northern Guilford County and southern Rockingham County and flows north easterly into the Haw River.

On that same date (22 Oct 1782), John Stuart received a 300 acre land grant for land on Haw River adjoining his own land and Jesse Parker’s line. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 2, p. 317.) The land was entered 28 Nov 1778. The survey was dated 1 May 1782. Elisha Briggs and Reuben Land were chain carriers. (North Carolina Land Grants.)

Notes: John Stewart (Sr) (d 1793/96) and wife Jean of Benaja Creek.

Notes: The Donnell connection strongly suggests this John Stewart is the same one in Rowan in the 1760s, or at least a relative of that John as he too was associated with Donnells.

On 7 Apr 1784 John Stuard deeded land to James Stuard, being part of the same land where John then lived on Benajah Creek granted to him 22 Oct 1782. John Stuart signed and his wife Jean made her mark. Witnesses were Walter Hill and Robert Rowland. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 3, pp. 47-48).

Notes: John Stewart (Sr) (d 1793/96) and wife Jean of Benaja Creek.

On 8 Nov 1784 John Stewart received a state grant of 200 acres on Hogans Creek. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 3, p. 201). The land was entered 6 Nov 1779 and surveyed 7 Aug 1783. The survey says it borders Alexander Walker’s land. Chain Carriers were Benjamin Moore and Francis Hodge. (North Carolina Land Grants.)

Notes: This is John Stewart (Jr) (c1756-1830) and Mary Kerr of Hogans Creek.

Notes: I couldn’t find Hogans Creek on the maps at first, but Kathi Bobb informed me that it is in what is now Rockingham County. I was able to find it after that. It rises southeast of Reidsville and flows north easterly for several miles eventually crossing into Caswell County on its way to the Dan River near the Virginia border. HOWEVER, I later found there is another Hogan Creeks in Rockingham County. The eastern one was described above. The other is in the southwestern part of the county, rising not far from the present Forsyth and Guilford lines, and flowing northerly eventually joining the Mayo River a little east of Mayodan. The obvious question is which Hogans Creek did John and Mary Stewart have land on? This is almost certainly the eastern one because William Fleming, the bondsman for John and Mary’s 1774 marriage, received a land grant on Hogans Creek “of Dan River” which clearly denotes which of the two Hogans Creeks it was. Note that William Fleming married Agnes Starrett in 1772. Starrett is a variation of Stewart.

Notes: John and Mary Stewart sold this land on 24 Aug 1785. See below.

On 24 Aug 1785 John Stewart of Guilford County, made a deed to Joshua Wright for the 200 acres on Hogans Creek. This deed was signed by John and Mary Stewart. Witnesses were Wm Clark and Joseph Clark and William Clark. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 4, p. 88).

Notes: See my notes for the 8 Nov 1784 land grant when John received this land.

Notes: This is John Stewart (Jr) (c1756-1830) and Mary Kerr of Hogans Creek.

Notes: William Clark Sr is father of Joseph and William Jr. I found Joseph Clark and William Clark Jr near each other on the 1790 census in Rockingham. Though William was listed as “Jr” there was no listing for William Clark Sr.

Notes: Deeds related to the Clarks on Hogans Creek mention Allens Branch, neighbors Daniel Allen, Joshua Allen, Peter Oneal, Samuel Watts, John Mattocks, Nathaniel Williams and others. This may help narrow down where the Stewart land was on that very long creek.

On 1 Sep 1785, John and Jean Stewart made a deed to John Jones for land on Benajah Creek. Witnesses were John Peace and Samuel Stewart. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 4, p 131).

Notes: John Stewart (Sr) (d 1793/96) and wife Jean of Benaja Creek.

In 1785, Rockingham County was formed from the northern portion of Guilford. A portion of Benaja Creek fell into the new county which is where John Stewart Jr had his land.

On 24 Feb 1787, John Stewart Sr of Guilford, made a deed to John Stewart Jr of Rockingham, being land on Benajah Creek adjoining James Stewart. John signed, but his wife Jean did not, perhaps dead by then. Witnesses were William Gibson and Francis Price. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 5, p. 19.)

Notes: John Stewart (Sr) (d 1793/96) and wife Jean of Benaja Creek.

Notes: This is John Stewart (Jr) (c1756-1830) and Mary Kerr of Hogans Creek.

On 16 May 1787, John Stewart received a state land grant of 400 acres on Alamance and Pole Cat. The land was entered 28 Sep 1784, bordering William Weatherly, Fothergill, William Shannon, Robert Neeley and William Quiet. The survey was dated 31 May 1785. Chain Carriers were John Johnson and Solomon Shannon. (North Carolina Land Grants.) I didn’t find a corresponding deed for this in the deed book.

Notes: This is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat.

On 22 Aug 1787, James Brown sold land to John Stewart blacksmith. The land was described as 282 acres on a branch of Reedy Fork of Haw River on the south side of the fork and on both sides of the county line between Orange and Roan (Rowan), now Guilford. The land was granted by deed to William Anderson by Granville 23 May 1758. Signed James Brown. Witnessed by Henry Reed and George Park. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 4, pp. 337-338).

Notes: This is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat.

Notes: Reedy Fork of Haw River rises in Kernersville, which is west of Greensboro and flows north easterly above the city, then turns mostly easterly and flows the entire width of Guilford before joining the Haw River just inside of Alamance County.

We can narrow down where this land was based on the description as being on both sides of the old county lines between Rowan and Orange. That means the land was on the eastern side of Guilford somewhere in the vicinity of the current Alamance County line.

On 15 Nov 1787 John Stewart made a deed to Samuel Stewart, his son (so stated in the deed), for land on Benajah Creek. John’s wife Jean didn’t sign the above deed, perhaps having died by then, or just left off for some reason. Witnesses were James Stewart and John Jones. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 4, p. 367.)

Notes: John Stewart (Sr) (d 1793/96) and wife Jean of Benaja Creek.

Notes: This is the very same land that John Sr had deeded to John Jr earlier that same year. Somehow it reverted back to Sr, perhaps due to non payment.

On 13 Nov 1788, John Stuart was bondsman for the marriage bond of John Neely and Mary Stuart.

Notes: I think this is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat. Mary Stewart Neely might be their daughter.

1790 Census Guilford Co., NC

p. 494 John Stuart 1-1-5-0-0                This is probably Blacksmith John.

p. 495 John Stuart 1-0-1-0-2                This is probably John & Jean.

p. 501 Jehu Stuart 3-2-4-0-0                Indexed as “John” but says Jehu.

On 17 Sep 1790, John Stewart was bondsman for the marriage bond of James Stewart and Margrit Braley.

Notes: I think this is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat. James is likely their son.

On 8 Nov 1791, John Stewart Blacksmith of Guilford made a deed to William Malhattan, being 282 acres on Reedy Fork from the 1787 deed. The deed was signed by John Stewart and Mary Stewart. Witnesses were George Wilson and Edward Holland. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 5, p. 279).

Notes: This is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat.

On 17 Nov 1792, John Stewart Senr gave a deed of gift to his son Samuel Stewart for various livestock, etc. (No land.) John Stewart signed. Witnesses were Samuel Hill and William Russell. The deed was acknowledged in May 1793 court. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 5, p. 420.)

Notes: John Stewart (Sr) (d 1793/96) and wife Jean of Benaja Creek.

On 13 Feb 1795, John Stuart obtained a marriage bond to marry Sarah Cook. Abraham Cook was bondsman. This is actually Jehu Stewart (Jr), not John, but it is published as John.

Notes: This is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat. William Stewart is likely their son.

On 1 Sep 1800, John Stewart received a state land grant for 100 acres on Pole Cat adjoining his own line and Fothergills old line. The land was entered 17 Aug 1790. The survey was dated 31 May 1792. John Stephenson and Samuel Shannon were chain carriers. (North Carolina Land Grants.)

Notes: This is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat.

On 24 Dec 1800, John Stewart received a state land grant of 100 acres. Pole Cat. Bordered his own property, and Fothergill and Sullivan. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 7, p. 348.) This may be the same grant dated 1 Sep 1800. See above.

On 29 Jan 1801, John Stewart of Guilford made a deed to Abraham Powell for 30 pounds. 30 acres on Alamance, part of a tract formerly belonging to said John Stewart. Signed by John Stewart. Witnessed by Nathan Armfield, Wm Dobson. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 8, pp. 337-338.)

Notes: This is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat.

On – Nov 1801, John Stewart of Guilford made a deed to Daniel Sullivan for 60 pounds. 100 acres on Pole Cat granted to John Stewart by the state. Bordering Fothergill and Sullivan. Signed by John Stewart. Witnessed by William Adams and Joseph Jackson. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 11, p. 169.)

Notes: This is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat.

On 1 Dec 1801, John Stewart of Guilford made a deed to James Kirkman for $273 for 168 acres on the waters of Alamance being “part of a tract of land formerly belonging to the said John Stewart.” (Formerly? This wording makes no sense, for it was formerly his land, it wouldn’t be his to sell any longer.) Mentions Levi Tucker’s line, Powell’s corner, Joseph Jackson’s line, Nathan Armfield line. Signed by John Stewart. Witnessed by James Neeley and George Alexander. The deed was proved in Nov 1803 court by George Alexander. (Guilford Co., NC Deed Book 8, p. 118.)

Notes: This is John Stewart (bef 1755-aft 1803), Blacksmith, and wife Mary of Reedy Fork, later of Alamance and Pole Cat.

Notes: George Alexander married Mary Stuart in 1774 in Guilford.

Notes: Two Neelys married Stewarts prior to this. John Neeley to Mary Stuart in 1788 (John Stuart, bondsman), and Andrew Neely to Agnes Stewart 1799 (William Stewart bondsman).

On 12 Jun 1802, John Stuart was the bondsman for the marriage bond of David Gorrell and Euphanie Stewart.
