I am not related to Nathaniel Stewart as far as I can prove. However, he lived in Buncombe Co., NC at the same time as my ancestor John Stewart (1730/40-1830). I have no evidence they were related or even knew one another. They lived in different parts of the county.

Nathaniel Stewart (often Stuart) was born before 1755 per his age on the 1800 census. He may have been born close to 1755 or perhaps way earlier. He is listed as a tithable on the 1774 tax list in Surry Co., NC. If tithables were defined as 21 and up, that pushes his birth back to ca 1753 or earlier. However, if tithables were 16 and up, that only works out to ca 1758 or before, which doesn’t help narrow it down.

I don’t know who Nathaniel’s parent are. I think the prime suspect is John Stewart (bef 1755- 1807). John had a proven son named Nathaniel, and it could indeed be this one, though it could just as easily be a younger one, perhaps Nathaniel Stewart (c1772).

Nathaniel Stewart married Mary —, maiden name unknown. Some have listed her as a Bledsoe. That could be because they were associated with, and neighbors to, some Bledsoe families. However, I don’t know if there is any proof of her being a Bledsoe.

I don’t know when they married, but early 1770s or before, or much before if he’s way older than we know.

Nathl. Stewart is listed on the 1774 Surry Co., NC tax list in M. Armstrong’s company along with several other Stewarts, all likely related to him (Charles, William, Isaiah, and Ben). He had one tithable, himself, presumably.

He is on the 1786 state census in Surry Co., NC in Capt. Humphre’s District near several other Stewarts.

There are several records in the 1789-1802 period for Nathaniel Stewart in Surry Co., NC and neighboring Patrick Co., VA. It isn’t entirely clear which Nathaniel these records are for in each case, I think most of them are for the elder Nathaniel, but I can’t be totally sure.

On 20 Feb 1789 Thomas Rabon, of Surry Co., NC, made a deed to Nathaniel Stuart of the same place for 70 pounds for 150 acres on Little Fisher River. Thomas Rabon and his wife Sarah Rabon both made their marks. Witnesses were Thomas Norman, Hampton Stuart and Silraner? Rabon. (Surry Co., NC Deed Book D, pp. 421-422.)

The above is almost certainly the older Nathaniel, as the other one was only about 17 in 1789.

The deed does establish a connection between Nathaniel (elder) and Hampton Stuart (1760/70). They may be father and son.

Little Fisher River rises in north Surry County very near the Virginia line (Carroll County), and flows southeasterly a few miles until it joins the Fisher River near the town of Dobson.

Nathaniel Stewart was mentioned in Surry Court on 15 Feb 1787 when it was ordered that Thomas Ballard be overseer in room of Nathaniel Stewart. In other words, Nathaniel's term had expired, or he requested to be relieve as overseer of the road (appointed 11 Aug 1785). (Surry County, North Carolina Court Minutes Volume I & II, 1767-1789 by Mrs. W. O. Absher).

Nathaniel is on the 1787 state census in neighboring Wilkes Co., NC. His enumerations are identical to those from 1786. He was the only Stewart in that county at the time. This was apparently a temporary move because he was back in Surry for the 1790 census.

Nathaniel is listed on the 1790 tax list in Surry Co., NC with one tithe (himself) and 150 acres of land.

On 14 Aug 1790, Nathaniel Stuart of Surry Co., NC, made a deed to Henry Norman of Surry for 75 pounds for the 150 acres he purchased from Thomas Rabon the year before. Nathaniel Stuart signed with a mark (N) and his wife Mary Stuart signed with her mark (M). Witnesses were William Norman, George Keith and Joseph Holder. (Surry Co., NC Deed Book E, p. 79.)

Again, this is probably the elder Nathaniel, not the one born ca 1772.

Nathaniel Stewart appears on the 1794 and 1795 tax lists in Patrick Co., VA. Each time he has three tithable males over 16, which would be himself and two older sons. This strongly suggests these entries are for the older Nathaniel Stewart, and perhaps his sons Charles (c1775) and Jacob (c1777) both of whom would have been over 16. Then again, this could be the younger Nathaniel (1772) and two siblings living together. It’s difficult to say.

On 21 Mar 1795, Cornelius Keith of Surry Co., NC, made a deed to Nathaniel Stuart of Surry Co., NC for 100 pounds for 130 acres in Patrick Co., VA on the branches of Stuarts Creek. Cornelius Keith made his mark. Witnesses were Asaph Moore Colegate, Charles Stuart and John Dockery. (Patrick Co., VA Deed Book 3, p. 82.)

I don’t know which Nathaniel this is, but I suspect it’s the elder one.

Stewarts Creek (modern spelling) rises where the North Fork Stewarts Creek and South Fork Stewarts Creek meet in Carroll Co., VA. It flows southeasterly several miles, crossing the state line into Surry Co., NC where it continues to flow southeasterly for several more miles before joining the Ararat River south of Mount Airy. It’s a rather lengthy stream and widens enough near the end to be considered a river.

Carroll County was formed in 1842 from eastern Grayson County. However, the part of modern Carroll where the Stewart Creeks are located was part of Patrick County until 1810 when Grayson took that section of county from Patrick.

There were no Stewarts listed in Patrick Co., VA on the 1791, 1792 or 1793 tax lists. As noted, Nathaniel Stewart was there in 1794 and 1795. No Stewarts were listed there 1796 through 1806.

On 24 Mar 1795, just three days after the last deed (21 Mar 1795), Cornelius Keith of Surry Co., NC made another deed to Nathaniel Stuart, this time listed as a resident of Patrick Co., VA. For 40 pounds, Keith sold him another 130 acres, this tract on the waters of Fish River, on the county line (didn’t specify what county), and crossing a branch of Stuarts Creek. Cornelius Keith made his mark. Witnesses were Charles Stuart and John Dockery. (Patrick Co., VA Deed Book 3, p. 81.)

Only a very small amount of Fishers River is in Virginia (now Grayson County). It’s about four or five miles from Stuarts Creek as the crow flies.

On 25 May 1797, Cornelius Keith of Pendleton Dist, SC sold 100 acres to Nathaniel Stuart of Surry Co., NC for 40 pounds for 100 acres on the west side of Stuarts Creek at the Virginia line. Cornelius Keith made his mark (K). Witnesses were J. Mackey, Matthew Keith and John Keith. (Surry Co., NC Deed Book G, pp. 87-88.)

On 30 Nov 1797, Nathaniel Stuart of Patrick Co., VA made a deed to William Perkins of the same place for 100 pounds for 130 acres on the branches of Stuarts Creek. (Same land he purchased from Cornelius Keith on 21 Mar 1795). Nathaniel Stuart signed (no mark). Witnesses were James Carlan, Abraham Hawks and William Carlan. (Patrick Co., VA Deed Book 1, p. 709.)

* Abraham Hawks married Nancy Stewart daughter of John Stewart “Sr” (d 1807) and Rachel.

On the same date, 30 Nov 1797, Nathaniel Stuart made another deed to William Perkins, this time for 30 pounds for 90 acres being part of the other 130 acre tract purchased from Cornelius Keith (on 24 Mar 1795), on the waters of Stuarts Creek. This time Nathaniel Stuart made a mark. Same witnesses as the prior deed. (Patrick Co., VA Deed Book 1, p. 710.)

On 23 Jan 1799, Nathaniel Stuart of Surry Co., NC made a deed to David May of same place for ten pounds, for 40 acres on waters of Fish River in Patrick Co., VA, being the remaining part of the 130 acres he purchased from Cornelius Keith. Nathaniel Stuart made his mark (N). Witnesses were Joseph Stewart, Abraham Hawks and David Turney. (Patrick Co., VA Deed Book 2, p. 449).

David May was married to Susannah Stewart, daughter of John Stewart Sr and Rachel. Joseph Stewart was a son of John and Rachel. Abraham Hawks was married to Nancy Stewart daughter of John and Rachel. John and Rachel also had a son named Nathaniel Stewart. Was this him in these deeds? I think that the elder Nathaniel and the elder John were brothers (not proven), so it could still be the elder Nathaniel here.

Nathaniel moved to Greenville Dist., SC by 1800. Cornelius Keith, who may or may not be related, had also moved to South Carolina by then, though he was in Pendleton District.

As noted earlier, there were no Stewarts on the 1796-1806 tax lists in Patrick Co., VA. Charles Stewart appeared there in 1807, but was gone after that.

On 3 May 1801, William Burrus of Surry Co., NC made a deed to Joseph Stuart of the same place for Little Fish River. Witnesses were Charles Stewart and Nathaniel Stewart Junr. (Surry Co., NC Deed I, p. 525).

This is the first deed I found that tries to distinguish one Nathaniel from another. The “Junr” means this was a younger man than another, but doesn’t necessarily clear up which one it is. We can assume it’s not the elder Nathaniel since he was in SC by this time, unless he’d returned. Thus it’s either Nathaniel (1772) or the one who is a son of John and Rachel, assuming they are not one and the same person.

On 19 Jan 1802, Nathaniel Stewart and Charles Stewart witnessed a deed from John Hawks of Pendleton Dist, SC to Edward Stewart of Surry Co, NC, for 100 acres on Naked Creek, a branch of Stewarts Creek. This deed is listed in the Surry County Grantor index as being in Book I, page 551. However, it isn’t in that deed book on that page or nearby, so I wasn’t able to confirm this deed. This is probably a younger Nathaniel.

On 13 Oct 1802, Nathaniel Stewart of Surry Co., NC made a deed to William Fleming of Surry for 50 pounds for 100 acres on west side of Stuarts Creek at the Virginia line ... (the same he purchased from Cornelius Keith on 25 May 1797. Nathaniel Stewart made his mark (N). No wife signed, so perhaps not married yet. Witnesses were Jesse Snow and Frost Snow (made his mark). (Surry Co., NC Deed Book I, p. 516).

The above record (13 Oct 1802) was the last (as far as I know) record found in Patrick Co., VA or Surry Co., NC for Nathaniel Stewart.

As noted, I don’t know if any of those records just cited are for Nathaniel Sr or Nathaniel (1772) or a mixture of both.

Nathaniel is listed on the 1800 census in Greenville Dist., SC two house from Edward Stewart (1755/60) who is either his brother or son.

At some point during the 1800-1810 time frame, Nathaniel moved his family into Buncombe Co., NC in the Avery Creek area (just south and west of Asheville). Avery Creek is just east of the border with present Henderson County, and some of Nathaniel’s descendants were just over the line in Henderson County later on.

Nathaniel Stewart was one of five Stewart families listed on the 1810 census in Buncombe Co., NC, all of whom moved there in the 1800-1810 time frame like he did. Most of these are seemingly part of Nathaniel's family. The others were Nathaniel (1772), James (1780/84), and Joshua Stewart (c1775), all likely sons of Nathaniel. The fifth listing was for Jacob Stewart (c1775), son of my ancestor John Stewart. John and Jacob lived in the Haywood - Buncombe County border region. Nathaniel and his bunch were all in or near Avery Creek, some apparently in what is now Henderson County. Nathaniel's neighbors in 1810 were William Daniel and William Fletcher. Nathaniel’s possible son Nathaniel Jr was just five houses away. By this time, all of Nathaniel and Mary’s children were gone from home.

1f 45+ (before 1765)           Mary — Stewart (bef 1755) wife

Since both Nathaniel Sr and Jr were in Buncombe at the same time, it’s possible I've mixed up some records between them except in those rare cases where they actually included the Jr or Sr with their names.

On 2 Oct 1812, Nathaniel Stewart Junr entered 450 acres on the west side of the French Broad River beginning on a ridge between waters of Averys Creek joining John Evans and George Penland and Jacob Stewart. The survey was dated 31 Oct 1814 with William Prater and Middleton Prater as chain bearers. The survey mentions “Evans line formerly now Thomas Rogers line.” This land was granted on 4 Dec 1815. (North Carolina Land Grants and Buncombe Co., NC Deed Book H, p. 157.)

On 2 Oct 1812, Nathaniel Stewart Junr entered another tract of land, this one 200 acres on the west side of French Broad on waters of Averys Creek near Robert Rogers line. The survey, 31 Oct 1814 had the same chain bearers as the one above. This one was also granted on 4 Dec 1815. (North Carolina Land Grants and Buncombe Co., NC Deed Book H, p. 158.)

On 9 Jun 1814 Zachariah Candler made a deed to Nathaniel Steward Senr for several tracts on Averys Creek, etc. Zachariah signed. Witnesses were Charles Stewart and Nathaniel Stewart Junr. (Buncombe Co., NC Deed Book H, pp. 231-233.)

On 21 Mar 1815, Jacob Stewart sold Nathaniel Stewart 150 acres on French Broad River for $100. This deed does not say Jr or Sr for Nathaniel, but when he sold this same land he was listed as Jr. I believe Jacob is Nathaniel’s first cousin. The land was described as on Benjamin Merrill’s line, Robert Pendland’s line (sic, Penland), originally granted to John Young. Jacob Stewart made his mark. Witnesses were John Miller and James Able. (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book G Page 356).

On 12 Jan 1816 Charles Stewart of Buncombe made a deed to Nathaniel Stewart of Buncombe. For $250 he sold him 250 acres on both sides of McDowells Creek. He included a second tract of 50 acres joining the above on the northwest corner. Charles Stewart signed. Witnesses were Jacob Stewart and William Cockerham (his mark). (Buncombe Co., NC Deed Book H, pp. 247-248.)

On 1 Mar 1817 Nathaniel Stewart made a deed to Edward Steward Sr for $50 for 200 acres on west side of French Broad on waters of Avery Creek near Rogers line ... being land granted to Nathaniel on 2 Oct 1812 (sic, that’s the entry date, not the grant date). Nathaniel Stewart signed. Witnesses were Jacob Steward and Charles Steward. In Jul 1818 court, Jacob B. Steward proved the deed. (Buncombe Co., NC Deed Book 11, pp. 476-477.)

Note that it’s not unusual to find the name spelled different ways in the same deed.

On the same date, 1 Mar 1817, Nathaniel Stewart made another deed to Edward Stewart Sr for $500, 450 acres west of French Broad River waters of Avery Creek bordering Evans, George Penland, Jacob Stewart. Nathaniel signed. Witnesses were Jacob B. Steward and Charles Steward. (Buncombe Co., NC Deed Book 11, pp. 434-435.)

On 1 Aug 1817, Nathaniel Stewart Jr sold 150 acres on the West Side of French Broad River to Edward Stewart Sr for $100. Nathaniel Stewart signed. Witnesses were Jacob Stewart and Charles Steward. (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 11 Page 431).

On 5 Dec 1818 Nathaniel Stewart received a land grant of 150 acres on McDowells Creek, joining Allen Twitty’s line, Zachariah Candler and his own line. It was entered 7 Jan 1817. The survey was dated 23 Oct 1818. Nathaniel Stuart and Wiley Crasly? were chain bearers. (North Carolina Land Grants and Buncombe Co., NC Deed Book 12, pp. 456-457.)

Nathaniel was listed on the 1820 census in Buncombe. There were actually four Nathaniel’s listed in 1820. However, two were probably duplicates. Many names were duplicated this way on this particular census for some reason. The enumerations are not identical in each case though.

Those on page 117 were listed side by side with no other Stewarts nearby. The one on page 125 was next to Jacob Stuart and two houses from Charles Stuart and four from Edward Stuart. The one on page 128 was next to Edward Stuart. It’s interesting that in one of Nathaniel Sr’s households he had two young boys at home, but in the other it was two young girls. In both cases, it appears he has a younger wife than before, suggesting that Mary had died before 1820 and he’d remarried.

My analysis (who each person *might* be)

1m 45+ (Before 1775)        Nathaniel Stewart

2m 0-9 (1810/1820)            1. Son? (only on p. 117 entry)

                                               2. Son? (only on p. 117 entry)

1f 26-44 (1775/1794)         Wife? (2nd wife?)

2f 0-9 (1810/1820)              1. Daughter? (only on p. 128 entry)

                                               2. Daughter? (only on p. 128 entry)

On 19 Dec 1821 (or 1820), Nathaniel Stuart received a 100 acre State land grant on waters of McDowells Creek between John Johnston, Nathaniel Stuart and Charles Stuart land and near Thomson Collins’s land. The land entry was made 6 Oct 1818. The survey was dated 26 Oct 1819 and had Benoni? Caine and Nathaniel Stuart as chain bearers. (North Carolina Land Grants and Buncombe Co., NC Deed Book 13 Page 28).

The older Nathaniel died ca 1824 for in Oct 1824 court, Edward Stuart was granted letters of administration. Charles Stuart was his bondsman. Unfortunately, any actual probate records were lost along with many other early Buncombe records.

I’ve found no information on a widow, If there was one.

Children

Nathaniel Stewart and Mary had numerous children per the census records. He may have had at least two more via a second wife if that’s the proper way to interpret his 1820 census entries. Unfortunately, none of his children are proven. Edward Stuart (1755/60) was the Administrator of his estate which was often assigned to the oldest son, but could also be a job for a brother or nephew instead. Census analysis, proximity and association suggests that Edward, Hampton, Jacob, Charles, Nathaniel (Jr), Joshua and James might all be his children, though none can be proven to my satisfaction thus far. They are certainly closely related to him, though Edward and Hampton could be younger brothers instead of his children. It all depends on Nathaniel’s actual birth date, whether he was old enough to be their father. Jacob and the others were born in the 1770s and 1780s, whereas Edward (1755/60) and Hampton (1760/70) might to be of his own generation if he wasn’t born too much before 1755.

1.         Edward Stuart (1755/60-aft 1834). Edward was definitely associated with Nathaniel, but I can’t say if they were brothers or if Edward was Nathaniel’s son. They traveled together from Surry Co., NC to Greenville Dist., SC and to Buncombe Co., NC.

2.         Hampton / Hamilton Stewart (1760/70-1832). Hampton was associated with Nathaniel in Surry Co., NC but didn’t follow him to SC or Buncombe Co., NC, instead going to Tennessee where he died in 1832. He named one of his own sons Nathaniel, which strongly suggests the elder Nathaniel was either his father or brother.

3.         Unknown Son born ca 1774/1786. Nathaniel had five apparent sons this age with him on the 1786 state census, aged under 21 (born ca 1765/86), and with him in 1787, aged under 21 (born ca 1766/87), and with him in 1790, aged under 16 (born ca 1774/1790). Using all three records we can narrow the birth range down to ca 1774/1786. I strongly suspect this is Nathaniel Stewart (Jr) (c1772-aft 1860) even though the younger Nathaniel’s birth date (per 1850 and 1860 census) is slightly out of the range. Nathaniel Jr was definitely associated with the elder Nathaniel in Buncombe Co., NC. Of course there is also the possibility that Nathaniel (c1772) is the same Nathaniel who is a proven son of John (d 1807) and Rachel Stewart as his birth is in range with their other proven children. If that is the case, then this unidentified son of Nathaniel (Sr) is still unidentified.

4. This son was no longer at home by the time of the 1800 census so probably on his own by then. I strongly suspect this is Charles Stewart (1770/75-aft 1830). Charles remained in Surry Co., NC over a decade before catching up with Nathaniel in Buncombe Co., NC, which is plausible because he would have been old enough to remain behind when his parents migrated. Then again, perhaps he wasn’t a son at all, but a nephew instead. He is definitely related based upon association, though not necessarily a son of Nathaniel.

5. This son was no longer at home by the time of the 1800 census so probably on his own by then. I don’t have any strong suspects to fill this slot in the family. There is a William Stewart (1774/84) on the 1800 census in Greenville Dist., SC who generally fits, but I have no data to connect him to Nathaniel other than them both being in Greenville at that time.

6. This son was still home in 1800 aged 16-25, born ca 1774/1784. I strongly suspect this is Jacob Stuart (c1777-aft 1860). Jacob was definitely associated with Nathaniel in Buncombe Co., NC.

7.         Unknown Son born ca 1784/1786. This son was still home in 1800, aged 10-15, born ca 1784/90. He was no longer home by the time of the 1810 census. I don’t know who this was. There is both a Joshua Stewart (c1775) and James Stewart (c1780/84) in Buncombe in 1810, either of whom could be Nathaniel’s sons, or nephews at least, but can’t prove that either. Census analysis alone isn’t enough to prove it. I found no record of either of them being associated with Nathaniel et al.

8.         Unknown Daughter born before 1786. Nathaniel had two women with him in the 1786 and 1787 state census records. One was certainly his wife, the other a daughter. By 1790 the number of females had increased to three. The two older daughters were no longer home by the time of the 1800 census, so probably married by then. I don’t know who she was.

10.       Unknown Daughter born ca 1787/1790. Nathaniel had three women with him in the 1790 census, two of whom had been with him in 1786 and 1787, suggesting the new one was born between 1787 and 1790. She was still home in 1800, aged 10-15, or born ca 1784/1790 which fits quite well. She was gone from home by 1810 so probably married by then. I don’t know who she was.

11.       Unknown Son or Daughter born ca 1810/1820. Nathaniel was listed twice on the 1820 census. In one instance he had two boys under 10, in the other, two girls under 10. His apparent wife in 1820 was younger than Mary, so it looks as though he remarried in the 1810s and had two young children by 1820. Of course it’s also possible these were grandchildren and not his own children. I have not identified any male or female Stewarts born in the 1810s who this could be.
