Richard H. Stewart (c1803-aft 1880) of NC (Buncombe) and GA (Murray, Catoosa) and TN (Hamilton, James)

I am not related to Richard H. Stewart as far as I can prove. However, he did live in Buncombe Co., NC at the same time as my ancestor John Stewart (1730/40-1830).

Richard H. Stewart (also Stuart) was born ca 1802/03 per his age on the 1850 census (47) and 1880 census (77). His other entries are close, 58 in 1860, and 66 in 1870.

I don’t know what his H middle initial stands for, but it does appear on several records.

He was born in North Carolina per his 1850, 1860 and 1870 census entries. However, his 1880 entry shows him born in South Carolina.

If his parents are who I think, then he was probably born in Surry Co., NC near the Virginia line.

Regarding his parents, I *think* he’s a son of Charles Stewart (1770/75) and wife Elizabeth, but I don’t have absolute proof of that. I’m basing it on two things, one, proximity, and two, Richard named his oldest son Charles.

Richard would have been around 7 for the 1810 census, so should be enumerated in the under 10 age group (born ca 1800/1810). There were several Stewarts within our area of interest that had apparent sons in that age group, including my main suspect, Charles Stewart, still in Surry.

Richard would be about 17 for the 1820 census, so he should be in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804), and perhaps also in the sub-group 16-17 (born ca 1802/03) depending on his actual birth date. Charles had moved to Buncombe by this time and he did have an apparent son listed in both those categories. In fact, he and Nathaniel Jr are the only ones who did. There were two potential matches in Greenville Dist., SC if he happened to be there. I include Greenville because some of the Buncombe Stewarts came from there.

Richard Stewart married someone, name unknown, before 1830, presumably in Buncombe Co., NC where they were listed on the 1830 census. They are on the same page with Nathaniel Stewart (c1772), but 19 households away. He was listed between James Blythe and Stephen Shipman.

Richard Stuart was listed as a voter in the 1835 elections in Buncombe in Bent Creek precinct. This puts him in the same neighborhood as Charles, et al.

Sometime between 1835 and 1840, Richard moved his family to Murray Co., GA where they are listed on the 1840 census.

                                               2. Elizabeth Stewart (c1835) daughter

Mrs. Stewart apparently died ca 1846, perhaps in childbirth with son Charles who was born that year.

On 13 Jun 1846, Richard H. Stewart obtained a marriage license in Murray Co., GA to marry Emely Ballad. They were married on 2 Jul 1846 by John B. Marston, J.S.C.

Emily J. Ballard was born ca 1823/24 in North Carolina. I don’t know who her parents were. There were no Ballards in Murray on the 1840 or 1850 census, nor any other Ballard marriages recorded there during that era. It may be noteworthy that Richard’s likely father Charles Stewart purchased land from a Thomas Ballard in 1820 in Buncombe Co., NC. Emily may be part of that same family.

They are on the 1850 census in Murray Co., GA.

Asa Keith Jr (c1805 GA) was two houses away. I mention this because the Stewarts in Surry were associated with a Cornelius Keith in the late 1700s. Might be a connection here, or perhaps not.

They apparently lived in the western part of Murray that became Whitfield County in 1851, and became Catoosa in 1853 which is where they were listed for the 1860 census.

They moved to neighboring Hamilton Co., TN between ca 1866 and ca 1869. They were listed in Hamilton on the 1870 census. They must have been near the state line because their Post Office was in Rod Clay, GA.

They apparently lived in the eastern part of Hamilton which became James Co., TN in 1871. (This county was merged back into Hamilton in 1920, so no longer exists.)

I didn’t find Richard on the 1900 census, so probably dead by then. I didn’t find Emily either, so she may have been dead or remarried.

Children

Richard and his first wife had five children. Richard and Emily had eight. Richard’s two oldest daughters were born ca 1825/1830 and were home in 1830 and 1840, but gone by 1850, so either married or dead by then. I haven’t been able to identify those two.

For Family Group Sheet and other notes see my database pages for Richard H. Stewart and first wife, and Richard H. Stewart and Emily J. Ballard.
