I (Marty Grant) am a 1st Cousin 6 times removed of Ecclesiastes Stroud.
Ecclesiastes was called "Eccles" for short, and as you can imagine, it was spelled numerous different ways on the various records, the most common being "Eccles", "Echolds", "Accles", etc.
Eccles Stroud was born ca 1784/85 (per 1850 census). He was either born in Orange County, North Carolina, or possibly in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC, depending on when his family moved from one to the other.
Eccles Stroud is a proven son of Jesse and Naomi (---) Stroud and was named as such in Jesse's Will of 1834. His father listed him as "Echolds" and as a child of his by his first wife Naomi.
In the late 1780's, Jesse Stroud moved from Orange County to Burke County and settled in the Muddy Creek region (now McDowell County). I don't know if the move was before or after Eccles' birth.
Eccles was apparently home with his parents for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) in Burke County.
Eccles' parents moved to neighboring Rutherford County in the late 1790's, and Eccles went with them.
Eccles seems to be home with his parents in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90) in Rutherford County.
Sometime around 1806 or thereabouts, Jesse Stroud and family left North Carolina and moved to western Tennessee settling in Dickson County. This was just west of Nashville. Eccles went with them.
Eccles may have married prior to the move to Tennessee, but I'm not sure of that. He married Mary --- probably in the 1800-1810 time period, so it is possible they married in Burke or Rutherford County, North Carolina, or possibly in Dickson County, Tennessee. Mary was born ca 1785/86 in North Carolina, county unknown. I don't know her maiden name.
Eccles was not listed on the 1810 census. He was probably in Tennessee that year, and that census is lost.
Eccles was mentioned in several Court records in Dickson County, Tennessee in 1816 and 1817. I don't remember who shared these records with me, but it was either Mildred Deyo or Beverly Holderby, I think.
On 5 Mar 1816, Eccles was named in a suit brought by the State against Acles Strowd. A Grand Jury indictment against Acles Strowd was returned to consider further. (Dickson Co, TN Court Records 1816-1828 page 4).
On 7 Mar 1816, Acles Strowd gave bond of $1000 as his condition of his personal appearance in September Court. (Dickson Co, TN Court Records 1816-1828 page 18).
On the same date (7 Mar 1816), Jesse Stroud and Thomas Johnson also gave bond for condition of his personal appearance. I don't know if this was his father Jesse or his brother Jesse. (Dickson Co, TN Court Records 1816-1828 page 19).
When September came around, Eccles was apparently somewhere else. He didn't show up for his court appearance. In the case of the State of Tennessee vs. Acles Strowd for Larceny. He was defended by his Attorney (name not listed) and found not guilty, and it was ordered that the Plaintiff was to recover (his expenses?) against the state. It was also ordered that since the defendant did not appear that his recognizance was forfeited (the $1000 bond). It was also ordered that his securities Thomas Johnson and Jesse Straud had to pay the $1000. (This was the same as posting a bail bond today). (Dickson Co, TN Court Records 1816-1828).
In March 1817, Eccles was again mentioned in Dickson County Court. This time it was in reference to the September (1816) case. An appearance bond was made by Guidion Francis, John O. Roberts (Eccles' brother-in-law) and George Mishil for $250 to give evidence on behalf of state in September term against Aculas Straud. I don't quite know what this record means. (Dickson Co, TN Court Records 1816-1828).
It may have been his legal troubles that lead Eccles to move his family back to North Carolina, or perhaps they just didn't like west Tennessee. In any event, they were back in Muddy Creek, Burke County, North Carolina by 1820.
Eccles Stroud was listed on the 1820 census. He was not listed near the other Strouds, but was in the same general area. His neighbors on either side were Moses Hicks and Robert Birchfield.

Eccles Stroud was listed on the 1830 census in Burke County. He was two houses from his Uncle Peter Stroud (1765/70). He was listed between Armisted King and Silas Rector. There seems to be some enumeration problems with Eccles' household, so it is probable that the information was obtained from a neighbor or a young family member who didn't know the ages of everyone. For example, Eccles was about 45 years old at this time, but the oldest male listed was in the 20-29 age group.

On 24 May 1834, Eccles' father Jesse Stroud made his Will in Weakley County, Tennessee naming his children, including son "Echolds".
E. Stroud was listed as a voter in the 1835 Congressional Elections. This is probably Eccles Stroud. He was listed in Burke County in Bucks Creek Precinct (he was the only one in that district, all the other Strouds were in Neals Precinct)
Eccles was mentioned in a family letter dated 11 Dec 1838 from James and Rebecca (Stroud) Mashburn of Muddy Creek written to her (Rebecca's) brother John Stroud and wife Delilah of Murray County, Georgia. In the letter this was stated:
"Your letter stated something about James Stroud sale of land. I can in form you that his land was executed and sold at Morgantown all his claims for two hundred and seventy eight dollars and it was said that he was broke. But he married Omy Stroud and left our parts. Some sade he run away, he carried too horses and prity smart of money, and left me one hundred and sevety or eighty dollars to pay, by going his security. I can in form you that Ecles Stroud and family went with him. [skipped some text]. The sale of James Stroud was forced by my self and others."
The above letter (and another one from 1837) tell us several interesting things which help to clarify some of the other records I've found. One is that James Stroud (or "Little Jim") married "Omy Stroud" and then moved away or "run away" leaving debts and bad feelings behind. The fact that Eccles went with them shows some close connection between him and Jesse and Omy. I'm fairly sure that Omy (Naomi) is Eccles' daughter.
So, from the above letter and the other records found, we can say that Eccles Stroud moved his family from Muddy Creek to Roane County, Tennessee around 1837 or thereabouts.
Eccles Stroud was listed on the 1840 census in Roane County, Tennessee. Son-in-law James Stroud was next door.

By 1849, Eccles and family had moved into neighboring Anderson County, Tennessee.
Eccles was listed on the 1850 census in Anderson County. He and Mary were living with daughter Susan and her husband Peter Kesterson.

I have no data on them after 1850. Unfortunately there are no decent 1860 census indexes for Tennessee.
Eccles and Mary had several children together according to the various census records. Most of them were daughters, and most of them are still unidentified. There are four children that I am reasonably sure belong to them (Naomi, Susan, Elizabeth and Jesse). The rest are speculative or unknown.
Unknown Daughter (1804/10) Naomi Stroud (c1810)
Unknown Daughter (1825/30) Elizabeth Stroud (c1826)
Unknown Son (1825/30) Jesse G. Stroud (c1829)
There were several female Stroud marriages recorded in Burke County in the 1820's, including Fanny Stroud and John Morris in 1822. Fanny was born ca 1790/1800 per her census records. There was also Becky Stroud and John McCaslin in 1824 and Joice Stroud and John Ingle in 1827. I believe all of them are already accounted for.
That only leaves Elizabeth Stroud who married Edward Jones in 1822. I have found no additional data on them so far, but I don't think she belongs to Eccles for there is younger Elizabeth that seems to be his daughter.
Whoever this Miss Stroud was, she married or died in the 1820-1830 time-frame, presumably in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC.
It seems very likely that this is Naomi "Omy" Stroud (c1810) who married James "Little Jim" Stroud ca 1836. Two old family letters from 1837 and 1838 state that "Little Jim Stroud" married "Omy Stroud" and that when they left NC, Eccles Stroud went with them. Since James Stroud does not fit as a possible son of Eccles, it makes more sense that Naomi was his child.
James and Eccles were next door neighbors on the 1840 census in Roane Co, TN. See James' page for more on their family.
I have no strong suspects for who this son was, but the only male Stroud that I know of who was in the area and fits was John Stroud who married Rebecca Garrett in 1832. This John never appeared on a census record, dying ca 1840, so I can't determine when he was born.
There were two John Strouds in Burke County, the other John Stroud (1807) was older than this one. An 1834 estate sale showed both a "John" Stroud and one listed as "P. John Stroud". Since the Strouds used nicknames to distinguish the various men of the same name, I'd bet that "P. John" is this younger John Stroud. The "P" could be for a nickname, or perhaps he was named "Peter John" or something like that.
Assuming that "P. John Stroud" is the same John who married Rebecca Garrett, then he would have to be born at least by 1813. Also, assuming he was at least 21 when he married in 1832, he would have been born ca 1811 or earlier.
This all fits age-wise, but I really have no evidence linking John Stroud (and wife Rebecca Garrett) to Eccles Stroud, however there is no where else that John would fit. See his own page for additional information.
I have not been able to identify this daughter.
I don't know who this daughter was. She probably married in the 1830's in either Burke Co, NC or possibly in Roane Co, TN. There are no female Stroud marriages recorded from that time-frame in either county.

On or about 12 Nov 1849, Susan Stroud married Peter Kesterson in Anderson Co, TN. Peter was born ca 1822/23 in Tennessee.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Anderson with Susan's parents living with them.

This is probably Elizabeth Stroud who was born ca 1825/26 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina. She married Thomas Wright on or around 13 Nov 1849 in Anderson Co, TN.
They were listed on the 1850 census just a few houses from her probable brother Jesse G. Stroud.

This has to be Jesse G. Stroud (c1829). Jesse was born ca 1828/29 in North Carolina and was also in Anderson Co, TN in 1850.
Jesse G. Stroud married Eliza Stroud on or around 27 Oct 1849 in Anderson County, Tennessee. Eliza was born ca 1832/33 in Tennessee. If she is also a Stroud (as the marriage record indicates), then she must be a cousin to Jesse, but I don't know who her parents might have been. There were no other Stroud families in Anderson County, Tennessee as far as I know.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Anderson County, Tennessee just a few houses from Thomas and Elizabeth (Stroud) Wright, who I believe is Jesse's sister.

Eccles' daughter Susan married Peter Kesterson in 1849. There is no way they could have an 11 year old daughter, having just married. There are a couple of explanations. One: She was 11 months old, not 11 years, and the census taker just messed up. Two: She was a younger sister to Peter Kesterson (he wasn't really old enough to be her father, if she was 11), or three: she was a child of Susan Stroud born out of wedlock, and listed as a "Kesterson" by mistake.
I don't know which of these theories is correct concerning Mary Kesterson age 11 in 1850.
