[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to James Turner.
James Turner was born ca 1774/84 (per census analysis). I don't know where he was born, though he was living in Marlboro District, South Carolina by 1800, but I don't know if he was born there.
This is probably the same James Turner who is a proven son of Thomas Turner (bef 1755) as named in some record (either a Will or Estate record) which I once had but can no longer find. Thomas and James lived near each other, so I'm relatively sure this is the same James, though I wish I knew what the original record was that proved Thomas had a son named James.
James was not listed on the 1790 census, so he probably was still at home with his parents, as he would have been under 16 years old. In 1790 Marlboro District was still a part of Cheraws District and his father Thomas was listed there that year and did have 4 sons under 16 (born 1774/90), one of which was certainly James.
James Turner married someone (name unknown) in the 1790's presumably in Cheraws District (now Marlboro County), South Carolina. She was born ca 1774/84.
In 1798 (effective 1800), Marlboro District was formed from Cheraws District.
James Turner was listed on the 1800 census in Marlboro District, SC. Unfortunately the census taker alphabetized the list, so I can't tell who his neighbors were, or if he lived near any of the other Turners.

James was listed on the 1820 census in Marlboro District. Once again the census was alphabetical, so I can't tell if he was living close to the other Turners.

I did not find James on the 1830 census in Marlboro District. He may have moved away in the 1820's, or else died in the same time-frame. There were no apparent widow Turners listed on the 1830 census in Marlboro.
James Turner and wife had quite a few children per the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census. I have not identified any of these children. Since I think this family moved away in the 1820's, I'll just list the census ages after each supposed child instead of giving them their own sections.
