I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grand Nephew of Andrew Bryson.
Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), and Ethel Updike (1899-?) for their books on the Bryson family, including information on this particular branch of the family, although Ms. Updike had Andrew listed in the wrong branch of the family.
Andrew's family was documented in the William Cathey Family Bible. William's wife Elizabeth Bryson was Andrew's sister.
Andrew Bryson was born 25 Jan 1804 (per William Cathey Family Bible). He was born in North Carolina, but it is not clear what county his parents were in at that time. They were in Iredell Co, NC in 1800, and in Buncombe County shortly afterwards (by 1806, anyway). Andrew could have been born in either place. If in Buncombe, it was in that part of Buncombe that became Haywood County in 1808.
Andrew Bryson is a son of Andrew Bryson (1752) and his second wife who's name has not been discovered. I have not seen any primary evidence proving that Andrew (1804) was a son of the elder Andrew but the circumstantial evidence seems clear. He was listed in the Family Bible of his sister Elizabeth Bryson (1787) (wife of William Cathey), and Elizabeth's offspring claimed to be from old Andrew Bryson. However, I have not seen any first hand evidence proving the connection of Andrew Jr to his parents, but I'm quite confident that Andrew is a son of the elder Andrew. Further, when he died, James N. Bryson (proven son of Andrew Sr) was one of Andrew's Administrators. Ethel Updike listed this Andrew as a son of John Bryson (1769), but that is wrong, for his son lived until 1884, while this Andrew died in 1828. Lawrence Wood included Andrew (Jr) in the Andrew (Sr) family. Neither offered proof for their conclusions though.
Andrew was probably home with his parents for the 1810 census, but unfortunately Andrew Bryson Sr has not been found on that census.
Andrew was probably still home with his parents for the 1820 census, but once again Andrew Sr is not listed on the census. We know that he lived on Tuckaseegee River on a Indian Reservation under the Cherokee Treaty of 1817 (Andrew Sr's third wife was Cherokee). The census taker probably did not go into that area in 1820 since Indians were not supposed to be included on the census.
In early 1825, Andrew Bryson turned 21. At that time, he was one of several Andrew Brysons in the area. His father Andrew Bryson (1752) was still around (until his death in 1835), as was his first cousin Andrew Bryson (c1785) who died in 1826. The confusion can only be slight, since all three of them were dead within just a few years.
Sometime before ca 1826, Andrew Bryson (Jr) married Lucinda ---, presumably in Haywood (now Jackson) County. No marriage record has been found, nor any evidence of her maiden name. Lucinda was born 25 Jan 1807 (per William Cathey Family Bible). She was listed there as "Lucinda Bryson". This could be using her married name, or perhaps she was also a Bryson by birth. No marriage date was recorded in the Bible though. She was born in Buncombe (now Henderson) Co, NC. There were Brysons in that area as well. Someone suggested that her maiden name was "Byers" since her oldest son was named "James Byers Bryson", but "Byers" was a common middle name among the Brysons at that time, so it may not relate to Lucinda's maiden name.
Andrew Bryson died on 4 Oct 1828 (per William Cathey Family Bible) in Haywood (now Jackson) County. His first cousin Andrew Bryson (1785) had died in 1826, and their Estate Records are mixed together at the North Carolina Archives (an understandable error). Andrew (1804) died just two weeks before his second child was born.
In his Estate Papers, a record dated October 1828 shows that James N. Bryson (his brother), and Thomas Cathey (nephew) and Milton Brown were his Administrators. Another record dated 2 Mar 1834 shows "Sindey Bryson" as Andrew's widow. The other papers were either about the other Andrew, or it is not clear which one is being referred to. (Haywood County Loose Estates - Andrew Bryson 1826, North Carolina Archives).
I was unable to locate Lucinda and her children on the 1830 census. I assume they were still in Haywood County at that time. Since I was also unable to find Andrew Sr, it is possible that Lucinda was living with him, or near him in an area where the census taker missed. She could have been living with her parents (whomever they were) or one of her siblings in 1830.
Around 1834, Lucinda seems to have had a child out of wedlock (Talitha Cora Bryson), born in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC. Haywood County Court records may mention this (if the child was hers, and born out of wedlock), but I have not checked those records yet. It is also possible that this was an orphaned niece or some other relation.
In 1836, Lucinda Bryson received a State Land Grant in Haywood. I have not seen the deed yet, only the entry in the index. (Haywood Co, NC Deed Book C page 509).
Lucinda was listed as head of household for the 1840 census in Haywood County. She was listed between Absalom Hooper (1760/70) and Clemmons Hooper (1770/80). (I think someone has suggested to me that Lucinda might have been a Hooper).

At some point in the 1840's, Lucinda and family moved into neighboring Macon County. They were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County. They were not listed near any of the other Brysons.

In 1851, Jackson County was formed from Macon County, including the section where this family resided.
Lucinda was listed on the 1860 census in Jackson County, but not too close to any other Brysons.

I did not find Lucinda on the 1870 census, but she was probably still in Jackson County.
She was listed on the 1880 census in Jackson County in Cullowhee Township living with her daughter Lucinda Bumgarner and family. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Lucinda (---) Bryson died on 12 Apr 1891 (source?) in Jackson County.
Andrew Bryson and Lucinda --- had two children proven by the William Cathey Family Bible, and Lucinda had another child after Andrew's death.
James Byers Bryson was born 28 Nov 1826 (Per William Cathey Family Bible) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC (per 1850 census). I don't know who he was named for, if anyone in particular, possibly named in part after his Uncle James N. Bryson.
He was apparently home with his mother in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), and was still home with her in 1850 ("Byers" age 23, born Haywood).
On 31 Mar 1853, J. B. Bryson married Nancy Morgan in Jackson County. Nancy was born ca 1832/33. I don't know who her parents were.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Jackson County.

Lucinda Bryson was born 30 Oct 1828 (Per William Cathey Family Bible) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC.
She was apparently home with her mother in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).
On 4 Dec 1848, Hosea Bumgarner obtained a marriage bond in Haywood County to marry Lucinda Bryson. J. C. Bryson was bondsman. This was John C. Bryson (1823) son of William H. Bryson (one of the wealthiest of her many cousins).
Hosea Bumgarner was born ca 17 Oct 1826 (source?) in Lincoln Co, NC (per 1850 census), son of Charles Bumgarner and Rebecca Odum.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County near Lucinda's mother.

They were in Cullowhee for the 1880 census, with Lucinda's mother Lucinda Bryson living with them. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Talitha Cora Bryson was born ca 1833/34 (per 1850 census) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC (per 1850 census). She was born several years after Andrew Bryson's death, so I don't know who her father was, but it is generally accepted that Lucinda was her mother. She was apparently home with Lucinda for the 1840 census, aged 5-9 (born ca 1830/35), and she was till home in 1850 ("Telitha Bryson" age 16, born Haywood), and still home in 1860 ("T. C." age 24, born NC).
Talitha married William L. McCall sometime in the 1860's. He had been previously married and had several children. Since I don't know his marriage date to Talitha, nor the date of death of his first wife, I'm not sure which children are Talithas.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Cashiers Valley near sister Lucinda and brother James B. Bryson.
