I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 7 times removed to William H. Bryson.
Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), and Ethel Updike (1899-?) for their books on the Bryson family, including information on this particular branch of the family.
William H. Bryson was born 8 Oct 1798 (source?) in Buncombe Co, NC (per 1850 census). I don't know what the "H" middle initial stands for, but many list "Holmes" probably after his grandfather James Holmes Bryson (1740/50). I have not seen any primary evidence for this middle name but it makes sense, except that his brother "James H. Bryson" may have been "Holmes" instead, though both could have the same middle name.
William H. Bryson is a son of John Bryson (1769) and Ann Land. This is noted in several sources including the Frank Bryson (1890) family write-up of the Bryson family. William was named as a sibling in the estate records of his brother Andrew Bryson (1809-1884). An 1853 Equity record also proves that William H. Bryson was an heir of John Bryson. As far as we can tell, William was the oldest son of John Bryson.
William H. Bryson was apparently home with his parents for the 1800 census in Buncombe County, aged "under 10", (born ca 1790/1800).
William was probably still home with his parents for the 1810 census, but unfortunately the enumerations are illegible.
When William turned 21 (in late 1819), he was one of two adults named "William Bryson" in the area, the other being his Uncle William Bryson (1775/80). There is some possibility of mixing up the public records pertaining to them, though the younger William generally used his middle initial on documents.
William was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census, age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804).
On 31 Aug 1821, William F. Bryson (the "F" must be a mistake, or misread) obtained a marriage bond in Haywood County to marry Medley Cunningham, daughter of George. Dillard Love was bondsman. Magdelena Cunningham was born 10 Nov 1799 (source?) in Buncombe County, daughter of George Cunningham and Mary McCarty. Her sister Mary Ann married William's brother Robert Bryson.
They lived in the section of Haywood County that became Macon County in 1828.
William H. Bryson was mentioned in the first Court record for the new county. On 23 Mar 1829, Macon County Court was organized, and Justices of the Peace (and other officers) were named, including William H. Bryson and his cousin Jefferson Bryson.
They were listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. He was not listed too close to any of the other Brysons, but his brother-in-law Hugh Rogers was nearby, as was Jeremiah Land, a probable cousin. There were some "extra" people in William's household who are unidentified.

On 30 Jul 1831 William H. Bryson purchased land from his cousin James N. Bryson (1795), being 82 1/2 acres on "the river". Witnesses were Thomas Rogers and Hugh Rogers (William's brother-in-law).
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 117 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)On 4 May 1833 William H. Bryson and Joseph Keener witnessed a deed from George Long to George Cunningham (William's father-in-law).
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 147)Two men named "William Bryson" voted in the 1835 Congressional Elections from Macon County. One in Franklin Precinct. and the other in Cullowhee. The one in Cullowhee is probably William H. Bryson, and the other his Uncle.
On 1 Sep 1835 John Bryson (William's brother) of Union Co, GA sold William 50 acres on Cullowhee Creek, and in another deed on the same date, sold him 83 acres, same place. Witnesses were Thomas Rogers and J. B. Allison (their brother-in-law).
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 253 and 254)Around 1836, another William H. Bryson turned 21, and also lived in Macon County, so there is a definite chance of confusion in the records. This one is William Hailing Bryson (c1815), a first cousin to this William. The younger William soon moved away, so the chance of confusion is only slight in the late 1830's and very early 1840's in Macon County records.
On 29 Dec 1837 William H. Bryson purchased land from Peter Mathis, being 57 acres. Witnessed by Adam Corn and G. Falls.

(Macon Co, NC Deed Book B page 638)On 26 Feb 1838 William H. Bryson received another Land Grant for 100 acres.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book B page 639)On 11 Oct 1838 John Corn sold William H. Bryson 55 acres on Cullowhee. Witnesses were J. B. Allison and Robert A. Allison.

(Macon Co, NC Deed Book B page 737)On 29 Oct 1839 Adam Corn sold William H. Bryson land on Cullowhee Creek (no acreage). Witnessed by Joseph Keener and John C. Bryson (William's son).
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1173)On the same date (29 Oct 1839), Adam Corn sold more land to William H. Bryson, this one described as 168 acres on Cullowhee Creek adjoining John Bryson Sr (William's father). Same witnesses as first deed.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1174)William was listed in Macon for the 1840 census, but not listed near any other Brysons. William had several "extra" people with him in 1840, who fit the ages of his mother-in-law (now widowed) and the rest are probably siblings of his wife.

(Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 121)On 17 Mar 1843 Isaac Millsaps sold William H. Bryson 100 acres on Chattooga River. Witnesses were James H. Bryson (brother) and J. C. Bryson (son).
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book D page 1468)On 22 May 1843, Magdeline Bryson received a State Land Grant of 100 acres on George's Creek of Toxaway River, entered 27 Aug 1842. I'm not sure why she was getting Land Grants on her own, but here it is, and another one followed. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book D page 1623)
On 10 Jul 1843, Magdalina Bryson recieved a State Land Grant of 200 acres on George's Creek of Toxaway River on Haywood County line, bordering Polly Ann Bryson (her sister), entered 27 Aug 1842. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book D page 1663)

(Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 313)On 22 Dec 1845 Alexander Willson sold William H. Bryson 100 acres on Chattooga River. Witnesses were William W. Lowdermilk and John C. Bryson (son). There is a possibility that this deed is for William Hailing Bryson (c1815) instead, for he was married to a Loudermilk, but the presence of John C. Bryson makes me lean towards the older William H. Bryson.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 125)On 10 Sep 1846 John Bryson (father) sold William H. Bryson 10 acres on Cullowhee Creek. Witnessed by J. B. Allison and Milton M. Bryson (brother).

William H. Bryson and Magdelena Cunningham had 11 children. Eight are proven by the various census records, and the rest are listed by Updike and Wood, I'm not sure what source they used, but the list seems accurate to me.
William Hamilton Bryson (1832)
John C. Bryson was born 7 Nov 1823 (source?) in Haywood (later Macon now Jackson) Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (born ca 1820/25), and home in 1840 aged 15-19, (born ca 1820/25).
