I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 7 times removed to James H. Bryson.
Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), and Ethel Updike (1899-?) for their books on the Bryson family, including information on this particular branch of the family.
James H. Bryson was born 14 Jul 1808 (source?) in Haywood Co, NC (per 1850 census). I don't know what the "H" middle initial stands for, perhaps "Holmes" after his grandfather James Holmes Bryson (1740/50).
James H. Bryson is a son of John Bryson (1769) and Jane Poston. This is noted in several sources including the Frank Bryson (1890) family write-up of the Bryson family. James was named as a sibling in the estate records of his brother Andrew Bryson (1809-1884). An 1851 deed also proves that James H. Bryson was an heir of John Bryson.
James was probably home with his parents for the 1810 census, but unfortunately the enumerations are illegible.
James was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census, age 10-15 (born ca 1804/10).
James H. Bryson married Margaret Hyatt in the 1820's, before ca 1827 in Haywood (later Macon, now Jackson) Co, NC. I did not find a marriage record in Haywood County for them. I've not yet seen any evidence that Margaret's maiden name was Hyatt, though I'm under the impression that one of their children's death certificate listed her name as such. I don't know who her parents were.
They lived in the section of Haywood County that became Macon County in 1828.
When James turned 21 (in 1829), he was one of several adult men named "James Bryson" in the area. This could cause some confusion in the public records as to which was which. He generally used his "H" middle initial, so that helps. The others were: James H. Bryson (1740/50) (usually listed as James "Sr"), James Bryson (c1780), James N. Bryson (c1795), and James M. Bryson (c1800). So you can see there is certainly room for confusion when a record simply says "James Bryson" in the 1820's and 1830's in Macon County.
They were listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. He was not listed too close to any of the other Brysons, but within a page of several of them.

A "James Bryson" voted in the 1835 Congressional Elections, and was listed in Macon County and Franklin Precinct. I think this is probably a different James, but thought I'd mention it just in case.
They were still in Macon for the 1840 census, listed very near his brothers Andrew and Robert and also close to his father John Bryson.

On 17 Mar 1843, James H. Bryson and J. C. Bryson (nephew) witnessed a deed from Isaac Millsaps to William H. Bryson (brother). On 19 Oct 1848, John B. Allison (brother-in-law) sold James H. Bryson land on Cullowhee. Witnesses were A. Bumgarner and Michael Long. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 409).
James and family were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County.

On 1 Sep 1851, James H. Bryson of Macon sold his 1/14th interest in the estate of his father John Bryson, deceased, to his brother-in-law John B. Allison, being land in Macon and Cherokee County. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book F page 354 from "Records of Macon County, N.C. 1849-1858 Deed Books F, G, H and I" Abstracted by Barbara Sears McRae, 1998. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "F" through "I" are taken from this book.)
In 1851, Jackson County was formed from Macon County, including the section where this family resided.
Margaret Hyatt Bryson died on 20 Sep 1859 (source?) in Jackson County.
James was listed on the 1860 census in Jackson just a few houses from his brother Henderson Bryson.

James H. Bryson died on 29 Oct 1864 in Walhalla, Oconee District, South Carolina. This is according to Ethel Updike. Apparently one of his daughters lived there and he was with her when he died. I don't know where he is buried.
James H. Bryson and Margaret Hyatt had 11 children. Ten are proven by the various census records, and one more as shown by Updike. The 1884-1885 Estate records for James' brother Andrew show the following seven heirs of James H. Bryson: N. E. Bryson, Sebern Bryson, Rucius Bryson, Taylor Bryson, Mary Wilson, John G. Allman and his wife Jane Allman, James Long and his wife Rebecca Long, heirs at law of James H. Bryson, Deceased,. Several heirs were not named, already being deceased by then.
