I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 7 times removed to John Bryson.
Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), Ethel Updike (1899-?) and Frank L. Bryson (1891-?) for their various write-ups on this family.
John Bryson was born ca 1768/69 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina (also per 1850 census). I list him as being born in Ninety-Six District, but that may not be correct. I'm not sure where his parents were living in 1769. If not 96 District, then probably in Camden District, in what later became York County.
Some researchers (including Updike) list John as "John W. Bryson", and some go even further and list him as "John William Bryson". However, I'm reasonably sure he was not named John William Bryson, for he did have a brother named "William", so it seems unlikely they would both have the same name. Also, I've never seen a single document showing this John Bryson with a middle initial. In fact, middle names were quite uncommon when he was born, and when they did exist, were usually a family name (mother or grandmother's maiden name, for instance). Among Germans of that time, middle names were common, but the Brysons were of Scots-Irish origin. However, John's mother was of German origin, so perhaps there could be something to this, but pending further evidence, I'm simply listing him as "John Bryson".
John Bryson is a son of James Holmes Bryson (1740/50) and Sarah Countryman. I've seen no primary evidence proving this connection, but several early family histories (written in the 1800's) list this John as James' son, and I see no reason to doubt it. He does fit there circumstantially as well.
There is also another possibility about John's parentage. Ann C. Goodwin shared an old family record written by Mangum Bryson (1837-1913) that listed his father John (1800) as being a son of John who's father was named "William", a Revolutionary War soldier. This would indicate that John (1769) was not a son of James Holmes Bryson, but a son of William. If true, then which William? There are only two likely choices, there is the elder William Bryson (c1720) and Isabella Holmes. If John (1769) is their son, then he would be the youngest child, and that would mean that John Bryson (bef 1755) was not their son. One problem with this is that the elder William was not a Revolutionary War Soldier as far as I know. The other William Bryson was William M. Bryson (c1750) and Susannah Bogle of Buncombe, later Henderson Co, NC. This William's birth date of "1750" is an estimate, so he could be much older. He is generally thought to have had a son named "John", but that hasn't been proven. His oldest known child was born ca 1775, so one born ca 1769 is not out of the question. This William was supposed to be a Revolutionary War Soldier. Could he be the father of John Bryson (1769)? It is certainly worth considering. Personally, I think Mangum Bryson just inadvertently left out a generation in his family record, and that John (1769) is indeed a son of James Holmes Bryson. However, we may never find conclusive evidence to solve this question.
It seems very likely that John was named for his Uncle John Bryson (bef 1755).
John's parents left SC by 1787 and were living in Lincoln County (now Catawba County), North Carolina and remained there till sometime just before 1790 when they moved to Pendleton District, South Carolina.
John would have been about 21 years old by the 1790 census, and was apparently home with his parents in Pendleton District, SC aged "16 and up" (born before ca 1774).
In the late 1790's, John's parents moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina and settled near the French Broad River.
At some point in the 1790's, John Bryson married Ann Land, either in SC or after the move to North Carolina. Ann was born ca 1774/84 (per 1800 census). I've been told she was a daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (---) Land, though I don't know what proof there is of all this. There were several Lands in Pendleton Dist, SC in 1790, but no Isaac. There was an Isaac Land in Union Dist, SC in 1790. In 1800, Isaac Land was in Buncombe Co, NC as were the Brysons.
John Bryson was listed in Buncombe County, NC for the 1800 census. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living.

On 10 Oct 1800, Joseph Dodson sold John Bryson 100 acres on Richland Creek in Buncombe County (this area later became Haywood County). (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 10 page 64).
In 1806, residents of Western Buncombe County made a petition requesting the formation of a new county (Haywood County), and John Bryson was one of the signers. This is most likely this John, as no others of that name were old enough at this time. The new county was created in 1808, and John's family fell into the new county.
Sometime before ca 1806, Ann Land Bryson died, presumably in Haywood Co, NC. After Ann's death, and sometime during this same general timeframe, John Bryson married Jane Poston, presumably in Haywood Co, NC. Jane was born 17 Oct 1785 (source?) in Iredell Co, NC (per 1850 census), daughter of John Poston and Rebecca Baldridge (source?).
For the 1810 census, John Bryson was listed in Haywood County, but he was on the very first page which is badly damaged or faded. His name is legible, but his enumerations are not. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living exactly.
Around this time (ca 1810), another John Bryson appeared on the scene, this other John Bryson (1787) was a nephew to this one. They lived reasonably close to one another in Haywood County. There is a considerable possibility of mixing up their records. Normally in a case like this, the elder would add "Sr" to his name, and the younger "Jr", at least for public records, though I've only found a couple of records where these two did that, so the confusion persists.
There are some deed records in Haywood County in this time period for "John Bryson", and in some cases it is not clear which John is being referred to, whether John Jr (1787) or John Sr (1769).
In 1814, William Cathcart, Sheriff, sold John Bryson 200 acres. I don't have the details, only the index data. This could be either John Bryson. (Haywood Co, NC Deed Book A page 279).
In 1814 Goldman Ingram sold John Bryson 200 acres on Scott Creek. This is probably John Bryson Jr, since he later married Ingram's daughter. (Haywood Co, NC Deed Book A page 282).
John Bryson was listed on the 1820 census in Haywood County. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living.

There were several deeds in Haywood County in the 1820's for "John Bryson", though I'm not sure yet which John it was. Several were for land on Richland Creek, so probably this John. I don't have the actual details yet, only the information from the Grantee and Grantor index.
In 1828, Macon County was formed from the western portion of Haywood County, and many of the Haywood County Brysons fell into the new county, or moved there shortly afterwards. I think John moved there in the early 1820's.
In June 1829 Court, John Bryson Sr was made Judge of Elections at his own precinct in Macon County. (Macon County, NC Superior Court Minutes 1829-1832, page 32).
John Bryson was listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. He was one of four adult men named "John Bryson" in Macon County at that time. This makes for some confusion in the public records. However, this John was generally listed as "Sr" in many records. In 1830, John was listed near several of his sons and married daughters.

On 19 May 1830, John Brison Sr received a State Land Grant for 272 acres on Tuckaseegee River in Macon County. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 41 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)
On an unknown date (deed registered 12 Dec 1836), John Bryson of Macon County, for "natural love and affection" "for my beloved grandchildren" Marthey Jane Green and John B. Green, deeded them a mare, 3 years old, and a saddle. Witnessed by J. Phillips. I am not sure which John Bryson this was. This John is the only one old enough to have grandkids in 1836, but I don't know who these two Green children could belong to. A name like "John B. Green" would almost certainly be "John Bryson Green" after his grandfather. I have not found out anything else about these Greens, so I can't figure out how they connect to this John Bryson, or if not him, to any other John Bryson. A deed like this might indicate that the children's mother had died, so their grandfather was looking out for them. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 308).
John Bryson (presumably this one), voted in the 1835 Congressional elections. He was listed as a voter in Macon County, in Culliwhee (sic) precinct. (Apparently the John Bryson Sr precinct no longer existed by this time).
In April 1835 Court, John Bryson Sr and others were named as a Jurors. (Macon County, NC Superior Court Minutes 1833-1836, page 75).
On 17 Mar 1837 J. B. Trammell deeded to John Bryson Sr his interest in 168 acres. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 426).
In March 1839 Court, John Bryson Sr and others were named as Jurors. (Macon County, NC Superior Court Minutes 1838-1855, page 34).
John was still in Macon for the 1840 census. He was listed near several of his sons. A younger girl (ca 1830/35) was with the family. This could be Anna Duncan (c1831) who was with them in 1850, relationship unknown.

In June 1840 Court, John Bryson and his sons William H. Bryson and James H. Bryson (and others) were named as Managers for Elections at Cullowhee Precinct. (Macon County, NC Superior Court Minutes 1838-1855, page 94).
On 28 Nov 1840, John Bryson Sr and William H. Bryson (his son) received a joint State Land Grant, as assignees of Jacob B. Trammell and Adam Corn, for 168 acres on Cullowhee Creek. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1313).
On 15 Oct 1841, John Bryson Sr sold his interest in their joint land grant to William H. Bryson (his son), being 92 acres on east side of road to Pickens (SC), "including farm I conveyed to Adam Corn". Witnesses were Thomas M. Angel and A. B. Allison. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book D page 1651 and recorded again in Book E page 121).
On 10 Sep 1846, John Bryson sold 10 acres to William H. Bryson on Cullowhee Creek. Witnesses were J. B. Allison (son-in-law) and Milton M. Bryson (his son). (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 127).
John was still in Macon for the 1850 census in Cullowhee District. None of his children seemed to be nearby. Ann Duncan (c1831) was with them. She would marry John's son Milton later in 1850.

John Bryson died on 23 Jul 1851 in Macon County. His obituary listed him as age 83, and "one of the first settlers of this country", and that he died at his residence in Macon County. (From Marriage and Death Notices from Extant Asheville, North Carolina Newspapers 1840-1870 An Index, page 66, by Robert M. Topkins, North Carolina Genealogical Society 1977.)
Shortly after his death, in the same year, Jackson County was formed from Macon (and Haywood) County, including the area where the John Bryson family resided.
Jane Poston Bryson was listed as head of household on the 1860 census in Jackson County near several other Brysons. E. Bennett (female) was residing with her, relationship unknown.

I did not find Jane on the 1870 census, but I have her death year as "1873" (source?), so she must have been around somewhere in 1870. I assume she died in Jackson County, though I don't know that for sure.
John Bryson and Ann Land had three children, and he and second wife Jane Poston had twelve children, given John a total of 15. The children are proven by several sources. Frank L. Bryson (189) did a write-up on the family naming most of the kids. An 1884 Estate division of Andrew Bryson names all his siblings as his heirs (he died without children). These records seem to paint a pretty strong picture of this family. The Andrew Bryson estate records are a fantastic source for this family. The full record (shared by Ann C. Goodwin) shows these heirs of Andrew, being his brothers and sisters: W. H. Bryson, Robert Bryson, Daniel Bryson, James Queen and wife Isabella, J. B. Allison and wife Rebecca; heirs of James H. Bryson deceased (his children named); heirs of Milton M. Bryson, deceased (his children named); Henderson Bryson, Sallie Lavasque, heirs of Coleman Bryson, deceased; heirs of John Bryson, deceased; heirs of Uel J. Bryson, deceased; heirs of Anna Rogers, deceased. This is 13 heirs, Andrew makes 14, and deceased brother Samuel (died 1849) makes 15, thus accounting for all the kids of John Bryson.
William H. Bryson was born 8 Oct 1798 in Buncombe (now Haywood) Co, NC. He is a proven son of John Bryson, named in the 1884 Estate records of his brother Andrew Bryson, and also in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up.
William married Magdelena Cunningham in 1821. See their own page for additional information.
John Bryson was born 8 Nov 1800 in Buncombe (now Haywood) Co, NC. He is a proven son of John Bryson, named in his own family record (shared by Ann C. Goodwin) . He was also listed in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up as "John A." Bryson. He was dead before the 1884 division of his brother Andrew's estate, but he was named in those records as being deceased.
John Bryson married Jane Ann Rogers in 1822. See their own page for additional information.
Ann Bryson was born ca 1801/02 in Buncombe (now Haywood) Co, NC. She is a proven child of John Bryson, named in the Estate division of her brother Andrew Bryson (1884-1885). For some reason she was not named in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up of this family. Her marriage bond also lists her father as John Bryson.
Ann was probably with her parents for the 1810, though their census entry that year is illegible.
She seems to be home with her parents for the 1820 census, aged 10-15 (born ca 1804/10).
On 7 Feb 1823, Hugh Rogers obtained a marriage bond in Haywood to marry Anne Bryson, daughter of John. Thomas Rogers was bondsman. Hugh Rogers was born ca 1799/1800, son of Thomas Rogers and Jane Young.
Hugh Rogers was listed on the 1830 census in Macon County next door to his parents, and two houses from Ann's parents.

They were still in Union for the 1850 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
In 1854, Fannin County was formed from Union County, including the section where the Hugh Rogers family resided.
I have no data on the family after 1850.
Sarah Bryson was born ca 1806/07 in Buncombe (now Haywood) Co, NC. She is a proven child of John Bryson, named in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up. She was also named in the Estate division of her brother Andrew Bryson (1884-1885).
Sarah was probably with her parents for the 1810, though their census entry that year is illegible.
She seems to be home with his parents for the 1820 census, aged 10-15 (born ca 1804/10).
On 8 Mar 1825, Jesse Levaskue obtained a marriage bond in Haywood County to marry Sally Bryson. John Cunningham and Thomas Rogers were bondsmen. Jesse Lavasque was born ca 1802/03 in North Carolina, son of Jesse (Sr) and Fanny Rogers.
Jesse was listed on the 1830 census in Macon County just a couple of houses from Sarah's parents. Jesse's widowed mother seems to be with them.

Sarah was listed on the 1870 census in Fannin Co, GA. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I did not find her in 1880, but she was probably still in Fannin Co, GA.
James H. Bryson was born 14 Jul 1808 in Haywood Co, NC. He is a proven son of John Bryson, named in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up. He was dead before the 1884 division of his brother Andrew's estate, but he was named in those records as being deceased.
James Bryson married Margaret Hyatt ca 1827. See their own page for additional information.
Andrew Bryson was born 27 Aug 1809 (per tombstone) in Haywood Co, NC. He is a proven child of John Bryson, named in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up, and it was his Estate division that named all of his siblings.
Andrew was probably with his parents for the 1810, though their census entry that year is illegible.
He seems to be home with his parents for the 1820 census, aged 10-15 (born ca 1804/10), and seemingly home in 1830, age 20-29 (born ca 1800/10).
Andrew Bryson voted in the 1835 Congressional Elections. He was listed as having voted in Macon County, Cullowhee Precinct.
Sometime in the 1830's, Andrew Bryson married Sarah Rogers in either Macon or Haywood County (no marriage record found). She was born 16 Dec 1811 (per tombstone) in Buncombe Co, NC, daughter of David Rogers and Mary Berry (I don't know the source for her parents names).
In September 1834 Court, a "boy child" Solomon Frady was bound to Andrew Bryson. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1833-1836 pg 26)
On 15 Dec 1838, Andrew Bryson received a State Land Grant of 25 acres on Cullowhee Creek. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1168 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)
On 19 Sep 1839, David Rogers (his father-in-law) sold Andrew Bryson 50 acres on Cullowhee Creek. Witnessed by William Norton and B. Kerbey. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1238)
Andrew Bryson was listed on the 1840 census just a few houses from his parents and from his brother James H. Bryson.

Andrew Bryson died on 21 Feb 1884, and Sarah Rogers Bryson on 23 Sep 1884. They are buried at the Rogers Cemetery in Jackson Co, NC.
Andrew and Sarah had no children, or if they did have some, they died young.
In Andrew's extensive Estate papers, all of his brothers and sisters were named as his heirs, and these records paint an excellent picture of the John Bryson family. (Jackson Co, NC Will Book A page 65, and Jackson Co, NC Orders and Decrees 1869-1908, page 179).
Isabella Bryson was born 7 Mar 1812 (source?) in Haywood Co, NC. She is a proven child of John Bryson, named in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up, and in the division of her brother Andrew's estate (1884-1885). Her marriage bond also shows she was John's daughter.
Isabella seems to have been home with her parents in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20).
On 17 Oct 1829, James Queen obtained a marriage bond in Haywood County to marry Eby Bryson, daughter of John. William Queen was bondsman. James Houston Queen was born 10 Oct 1808 (source?). I don't know who his parents were.
James Queen was listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. He was not listed near any of the Brysons that year.

Uel G. Bryson was born 10 Sep 1819 (source?) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC. He is a proven son of John Bryson, named in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up, and in the division of his brother Andrew's estate (1884-1885).
Uel G. Bryson married Priscilla Kirby in 1838. See their own page for additional information.
Samuel Bryson was born 27 Dec 1822 (source?) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC. He was named in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up of the John Bryson family, but was not named in the Andrew Bryson estate papers, for he was dead by then, with no heirs.
Samuel was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (born ca 1820/25), and still apparently home in 1840, age 15-19 (born ca 1820/25).
Samuel Bryson died on 10 Dec 1849 (source?) in Macon Co, NC (now Jackson).
Milton M. Bryson was born 24 Oct 1824 (source?) in Macon (now Jackson) Co, NC. He is a proven son of John Bryson, named in the division of his brother Andrew's estate (1884-1885). Milton was dead then, but he was mentioned as being deceased in that record. His children were named as his heirs: J. F. Bryson, Mary Painter, Worth Bryson, Columbus Bryson, Hugh Bryson, Vance Bryson, Sarah Bryson and Margaret Bryson. Milton was also named in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up of the John Bryson family.
I don't know what the "M" middle initial stands for.
Milton was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (born ca 1820/25), and still apparently home in 1840, age 10-14 (born ca 1825/30).

M. Coleman Bryson was born 23 Mar 1828 (source?) in Macon (now Jackson) Co, NC. He is a proven son of John Bryson, named in the division of his brother Andrew's estate (1884-1885). Coleman was dead then, but he was mentioned as being deceased in that record. However, he was not named in the Frank L. Bryson (1890) family write-up for some reason.
I don't know what the "M" initial stands for. Ms. Updike referred to an 1852 deed listing him as "M. C. Bryson", but I haven't seen that yet. She noted that it was signed as "Coleman" Bryson.
Coleman was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census, aged "under 5" (born ca 1825/30), and still apparently home in 1840, age 10-14 (born ca 1825/30). He was with his parents in 1850 ("Coleman", age 21, born Macon).
Coleman Bryson married Louise Bumgarner ca 1850 in Macon (now Jackson) Co, NC. I did not find a marriage record for them in either Macon or Jackson County. She was a daughter of Charles and Rebecca (Odum) Bumgarner. (She was with her parents on the 1850 census in Haywood Co, NC).
On 13 Mar 1850, Coleman Bryson of Jackson, sold 50 acres to Logan Berry of Macon, for land on Ellijay Creek near "Bryson's Licklog" This date must be wrong, for he is selling the land grant before it was officially granted to him (though that did happen).
