I (Marty Grant) am a 7th Great Grandson of
William and Isabella Bryson. Many thanks are owed to various researchers, but special thanks to: Ethel Updike (decd), Lawrence Wood (decd), Guy Davenport, Pat Spradley, Jim Wardley, Bill Lindsey, Sandra Fender, and many others (see the Bryson researcher page). William Bryson was born ca 1720, in Ireland, possibly in County Antrim, in the Ulster Province (modern day Northern Ireland). County Antrim is a very large region, and other Bryson families in America also came from there. We have no data on the parents of this William Bryson, though a family history published in the 1960's says his father was also named William, but I have seen no evidence of that at all. In any event, at least one William Bryson was in Lancaster Co, PA as early as 1743. A William Bryson was listed on the tax lists of 1750, 1754, 1756, 1757, 1758, and 1759 in Lancaster Co, in Bart Township. (Thanks to James Wardley for that data). Is this our William or his alleged father? No way to be positive, but it seems likely that it is our William. James Holmes made his Will on 28 Oct 1749 in Lancaster Co, PA. He spelled it "Homes", and referred to himself as being of Pennsborough Township. In his Will he named his wife Sarah and his son-in-law "William Brisson" and daughter "Isabell Brisson". This proves William and Isabell were married prior to 1749. Their oldest son was named "James Holmes Bryson", so it is clear this is the same family. (Lancaster Co, PA Will Book I page 197). Sometime before or during 1763, the Brysons left PA and moved to the (then) frontier regions of Rowan Co, North Carolina. On 2 Oct 1763 William Bryson purchased 554 acres on Back Creek (modern Iredell County) from Alexander Osborne. (Rowan Co, NC Deed Book 5 page 370). On 21 Mar 1765 William Bryson and his wife "Izabel" sold 300 acres of the above to John Bryson. Many assume that was their son John Bryson, but I personally think it was an elder John Bryson who may be William's brother, but there is no way to be positive. (Rowan Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 221). The 1778 Rowan Co, NC tax list shows William Bryson listed in Captain Davidson's company. On 22 Nov 1788 William Bryson "Sr" sold his remaining 254 acres on Back Creek to James Porter. Since his wife Isabell didn't sign this deed, she may have been deceased, but not necessarily so. (Iredell Co, NC Deed Book A page 99). Around the time of the above deed, William (and Isabell, if still living) left Back Creek and joined their children down in Pendleton Dist, SC (now Anderson Co, SC). Unknown daughter (or granddaughter) Unknown daughter (or granddaughter) The three women with William in 1790 are probably his wife Isabell, and two unknown daughters (or granddaughters). William was not found on the 1800 census, nor any other record for him found after 1790. He and Isabell probably died in the 1790's in Pendleton Dist, SC. It is possible that they went with some of their children into Western NC in the 1790's, and died there instead. William left no Will nor Estate records, nor any other official document naming his children. Besides the above, most of what we know of William and Isabell's family is based on family records and traditions written down two or three generations later. Their movements from Lancaster Co, PA to Rowan Co, NC to Pendleton Dist, SC is established by the Pension record of their son Samuel Bryson. Samuel Bryson (son of William and Isabella) stated in his Revolutionary War Pension Application (10 May 1833 Wilson Co, TN) that he was 79 years old (in his 79th year) so he was born ca 1754. He also said he enlisted in Rowan Co, NC where he had moved from Lancaster Co, PA in his 15th year. After the war he moved to Pendleton County, SC where he lived 6 or 7 years. Then he moved to Buncombe Co, NC for 8 years, then to Wilson Co, TN where he now resides. This data parallels exactly (except for moving to TN) what we know about William and Isabella, so it is reasonable to assume that Samuel is their son. In a Family record written before 1898 by Talitha Bryson Allen (granddaughter of James Holmes Bryson, son of William and Isabella) she stated that James, Daniel and Andrew Bryson were brothers. She mentioned that the family came from the province of Ulster in Ireland to PA, and later settled in Anderson District, SC. She stated all three brothers served in the American Army during the Revolution. Thomas Clingman Bryson wrote in another Family Record (written before 1940) that the brothers were James, William, Daniel, Andrew and John, and that they were sons of William Bryson and a Miss Holmes. They came from Ireland to Lancaster Co, PA then to SC and NC. Another Family Record written by Frank L. Bryson (1890-?) mentioned all six brothers: John, Sam, Daniel, Andrew, James Holmes and William. He also stated that William Bryson was an Irishman, and that his mother was from Scotland, and that William married a Miss Holmes of Lancaster Co, PA. All of the above information was based on family tradition and interviews with family members. It seems to establish fairly well that William Bryson and Isabella Holmes were the parents of James Holmes Bryson, John Bryson, William M. Bryson, Andrew Bryson, Samuel Bryson, and Daniel H. Bryson. The data also seems to agree that the Brysons came from Ireland to Lancaster Co, PA then to Rowan Co, NC, later to SC and western NC. Who are William Brysons parents? The only big question remaining is who were William's parents and siblings. In Ethel Updike's book she mentioned that this William (m Isabella Holmes) was a son of William Bryson and Elizabeth Countryman, but that seems to be an error. Lawrence Wood and others speculated that it was William Bryson and Elizabeth Byers, since the "Byers" family name was used as a middle name among several of the male Brysons. However, there seems to be no evidence at all that our William's father was also named William, nor his mother named Elizabeth, so speculations on his wife's maiden name seem to be a no win proposition at the present time. Our cousin James Wardley has done some research in Lancaster Co, PA records, and found that a Daniel Bryson was listed on the 1754, 1756, 1757, 1763, and 1769 tax lists in Bart Township, Lancaster Co, PA. He could easily be a brother of our William (m Isabella Holmes). A military record dated 11 May 1758 in Lancaster Co, PA, Bart Township, shows information on Daniel Bryson, stating his occupation was a weaver, that he was 5' 4" in height, and that he was born 1725 in Ireland, and enlisted at Barts, Lancaster Co, PA, and had a dark complexion. This birth year of 1725, makes him a perfect candidate for William's brother. Nothing else is known of this Daniel, nor if he was married and had children. Another candidate for William's brother is John Bryson of Tryon (later Lincoln, now Gaston) Co, NC. He died in 1779, and I think he was the same man whom our William deeded land to in 1765 Rowan Co, NC. I believe he lived near the York Co, SC line, but mostly on the NC side. His known children were named John and Hugh. Another candidate for William's brother is Hugh Bryson of Tryon (later Lincoln, now Gaston) Co, NC and York Dist, SC. Hugh was listed in Tryon Co, NC records in 1774, and 1784 indicating he had land on Crowders Creek. This Hugh Bryson died in 1787, and his Estate was listed in York Dist, SC. Joseph Cole and James Venable were appointed administrators on 27 Oct 1787. I have no data on children for this Hugh. There were quite a few Bryson's in Laurens Dist, SC. They may be related in someway. The John Bryson family of VA and Surry Co, NC may be connected also, but DNA test results show that John Bryson and William Bryson are not related. |
| Children of William Bryson and Isabella Holmes. William and Isabella's children are not proven by any primary evidence, however, six sons are known from family tradition, and lots of circumstantial evidence. I am 100% confidant that this list is correct, though probably not complete. There are no daughters listed, and I would guess that there should be some. Lawrence Wood told me that he thought there was a daughter of William and Isabell who married a Frizzell, but couldn't prove she was a Bryson. I don't have the names to list here. In his book, published in 1980, Lawrence included a daughter named Mary who married a Wells, but he later determined she was a Bryan, not a Bryson after all. |
