I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grand Nephew of Samuel Bryson

Many thanks are owed to various researchers, but special thanks to: Ethel Updike (decd), Lawrence Wood (decd), Guy Davenport, Pat Spradley, Jim Wardley, Bill Lindsey, Sandra Fender, and many others (see the Bryson researcher page).

Samuel Bryson was born ca 1754 in Mount Joy, Lancaster Co, PA. He is a son of William Bryson and Isabella Holmes, but there is no solid proof of that. However, I have no reason to doubt it being accurate.

Alot of what we know about Samuel was from his Revolutionary War Pension Application (10 May 1833 Wilson Co, TN) (Pat Spradley has a complete transcript on her site). He stated that he was 79 years old (in his 79th  year) so he was born ca 1753/1754. He enlisted in Rowan Co, NC where he had moved from Lancaster Co, PA in his 15th year. After the war he moved to Pendleton County, SC where he lived 6 or 7 years. Then he moved to Buncombe Co, NC for 8 years, then to Wilson Co, TN where he now resides.

In a Family record written before 1898 by Talitha Bryson Allen (granddaughter of James Holmes Bryson, brother of Samuel) she stated that James, Daniel and Andrew Bryson were brothers. She mentioned that the family came from the province of Ulster in Ireland to PA, and later settled in Anderson District, SC. She stated all three brothers served in the American Army during the Revolution. She didn't mention Samuel, but probably never met him since he moved to TN before she was born.

Thomas Clingman Bryson wrote in another Family Record (written before 1940) that the brothers were James, William, Daniel, Andrew and John, and that they were sons of William Bryson and a Miss Holmes. They came from Ireland to Lancaster Co, PA then to SC and NC. Once again Samuel was forgotten.

Another Family Record written by Frank L. Bryson (1890-?) mentioned all six brothers: John, Sam, Daniel, Andrew, James Holmes and William.

All of the above information was based on family tradition and interviews with family members. It seems to establish fairly well that William Bryson and Isabella Holmes were the parents of James Holmes Bryson, John Bryson, William M. Bryson, Andrew Bryson, Samuel Bryson, and Daniel H. Bryson. The data also seems to agree that the Brysons came from Ireland to Lancaster Co, PA then to Rowan Co, NC, later to SC and western NC.

So, family tradition shows us that Samuel Bryson is a son of William Bryson and Isabella Holmes. Is there any other evidence of this? There is no direct evidence, as far as I know, but there is lots of circumstantial evidence. Here is what we know about Samuel Bryson.

He was born ca 1753/1754 (date based on his reported age of 79 in 1833).

He was born in Lancaster Co, PA most likely. He came to Rowan Co, NC with his family in the 1760's, where his father William Bryson purchased land on Back Creek (now in Iredell Co, NC near town of Mooresville).

Samuel Bryson and all his brothers were reputed to have served during the Revolutionary War, and were said to be at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Samuel did receive a Pension for his service (See Pat Spradley's abstract of this Pension on her web site).

Samuel Bryson obtained a marriage bond in Rowan Co, NC on 14 Jun 1776 to marry Martha Bogle.

He moved from that area to Lincoln Co, NC where in 1779 he and his brother William Bryson both signed a petition requesting part of Burke County be annexed to Lincoln County.

On 8 Aug 1787 in Lincoln Co, NC, William M. Bryson and wife Susannah and Samuel Bryson sold land to Thomas Earwood. I haven't found where they obtained this land. Some think that they inherited it from their father William Bryson Sr, but their is no direct evidence of that. Since these two were married to Bogle sisters, perhaps they obtained it via the Bogle family.

About this time Samuel Bryson moved down to what is now Anderson County, SC, then Pendleton District. He was residing in this group: William Bryson, John Bryson, Samuel Bryson, and James Bryson all next to each other (these are his brothers).

I didn't find any other records for Samuel in  SC, but I could have missed some.

By 1800 Samuel had moved to NC with several of his siblings. The 1800 census shows Samuel Bryson in Buncombe County, NC. The listing was mostly alphabetical, so neighbors can't be easily determined:

Samuel apparently lived in what is now Henderson County, NC, but at that time was part of Buncombe. In 1803 Georgia formed the county of Walton and it fell within the boundaries of NC and was situated in present day Transylvania and Henderson Counties, which at that time was also Buncombe and Haywood Co, NC (formed 1808). A census taken in 1804 of "Walton Co, GA" shows "Samuel Brisen" listed there with 10 persons in his household (no age or sex details given). Walton was finally abolished in 1813, but Samuel was gone before then.

Samuel Bryson left NC after 1804, but before 1810. He moved to Wilson Co, TN. The 1810 census was lost for most of TN. Samuel was not listed on the 1820 census in Wilson Co, TN. His son Joseph Bryson had an older male (age 45+) with him, that could be Samuel. If that wasn't him, he might be residing with a married daughter. There was a Samuel Bryson listed in 1820, but he wasn't old enough to be Samuel Sr, unless the census transcript is wrong.

There is also a Samuel listed on the 1830 census in Wilson Co, TN, but I don't have the enumerations yet.

Samuel Bryson wrote his Will on 9 Jun 1834 in Wilson Co, TN. It was proven in Court in Sep 1835. In the Will (see a transcript at Pat Spradley's website) he named only his youngest son Joseph Bryson, though he left one dollar each to all his sons and daughters, but didn't mention them by name. Witnesses were Robert Bryson, William Bryson and Samuel B. Bryson. George Bogle was named Executor.

I have Samuel's death date as 10 May 1835 Wilson Co, TN. I'm not sure what the source is for his death date. Interestingly, his brother Andrew Bryson died 5 days before that (in Haywood Co, NC).

I haven't done any research in TN for Samuel Bryson, so I'm sure there are lots of interesting records to be found, and there may be a few in NC and SC that I don't have yet.

Children

I don't know what the proof is for his list of children, but I'm sure most are by association or tradition. Joseph Bryson was named in his Will, and Robert, William and Samuel B. Bryson were witnesses to his Will, indicating they were probably his children or grandchildren.
